hon degree conferred w j priestly 02 speaker mechanical engineering society holds meeting at dr drinker's residence penn state wrestlers win perm state grapplers win by the score of 19 to 11 one draw an interesting contest doctor of laws conferred upon john h maccracken presi dent of lafayette college as is the custom the junior ra torical contest was held in the uni versity chapel yesterday morning february 22nd all the speeches were well delivered in fact so well delivered that it was with difficulty that the judges could fairly decide the winners the first prize was awarded to donald thomas wynne for his ora tion our honor system char les henry cope won the second prize the subject being uncle sam ' s ph o eni x : our merchant marine the winner of die third prize was harold irvine fair for his subject are the universities of to-day fulfilling their obliga tions the two other orations were by ellis b-rod steins on twen tieth century materialism and by joseph anthony wyler on ameri can citizenship 5 . between the con test and the announcement of the winners by the very rev beek man appropr iate speeches were made by dr drinker and professor stewart after the announcement of the winners the honorary degree of doctor of laws was conferred up on john henry maccracken a 8 a m ph d l l d the new president of lafayette college the degree was presented by prof rob ert w blake on behalf of the fac ulty and by the rt rev ethelbert talbot on behalf of the board of trustees lehigh second game with swarthmore in the eastern divi sion of the pennsylvania league resulted in a victory for the rar net by a42to 28 score the game was fast with the swarthmore scoring machine much more accu rate than the brown and white phis proved the deciding factor in the game as the lehigh quintet had as many if not more shots from the field than did swarthmore captain green and ( i e y e r played well at guard but the forwards had an off day captain twining and donnelly were the chief scorers for the gar net and twining scored ten out of twelve foul goals the game started with a long goal from the field by green the scoring of the swarthmore team was however more effective and twining with his foul goal shoot ing made the score end for the first half 22 to 15 in favor of the ( l-arnet in the second half the result was the same better shooting from the field enabled the matter of choosing a system for the election of assistant mana gers was brought up at the college meeting last friday and after much discussion the matter was referred to a committee which was appoint ed yesterday by the senior presi dent it is as follows : g w hoban a f benson a v bodine g e ostrum r p sanborn this committee will look info the matter thoroughly and get data on systems in operation at other col leges this data together with any suggestions which may be offered by students will be published in the brown and white and at a later date the matter will be brought before the student body in a form to be acted upon the largest crowd ever seen at a lehigh wrestling contest before what was the largest crowd that ever saw a lehigh wrestling meet and one which com pletely filled the game room of tay lor gymnasium lehigh lost to perm state by the score of 19 to 11 the perm state grapplers had the advantage in size but never theless each match was hard f ought it was impossible for mr zello to give a decision in the 1154 b class even after kirkhuff and long had wrestled for fifteen min utes so it was called a draw it was the same condition in the 125-lb class and brown won a de cision only after a six-:ninute extra period had been given mccullough lost to kirk in the 135-lb class the perm state man was given 1 a decision on aggressive ness in nine minutes in the 1454 b class thomas was thrown on an accidental head and body hold by hill in nine minutes and fifty-seven c nds with a head and body hold thomas put up a game fight but could not release himself sawtelle easily won a decision 1 from verger in the 1584 b class good threw stecker in seven min utes and fifty-five seconds with a bar and chancery hold p oils fought fiercely against lamb but at the the banquet of seniors is march 12 faculty club a large number of students and faculty members on friday evening heard dr r w hall head of the department of biology give an ml-terestingm1 teresting talk on the mechanism of heredity before the arts and science club dr hall illustrated his lecture with a series of descrip tive charts heredity said dr hall in part is vastly more im portant than environment since the latter merely puts the finishing touches to the character already shaped in heredity in the pre-natal state he spoke at length on the development of the egg and its di vision and explained the phemome noni of mitosis owing to some conflicts which turned up the committee has post poned the session of the faculty club set for friday the 19th to the friday following the 26th professor thayer has consented to the change and will give his talk on the work of the english de partment the committee at the suggestion of some members of the club and as an experiment changes the hour for opening the session to 7:45 supt of armor plate dept of beth steel co gives advice to coming graduates the regular monthly meeting of the mechanical fngineering socie ty was held on thursday evening february 18th at the home of dr drinker the first speaker of the meeting was i j bleiler 15 whose subject was the senior mechanicals new n ork trip since the trip covered a period of live days his talk was necessarily a brief chronological presentation of the subject he mentioned in order the places vis ited and gave short explanations descriptions and surprising data which had been collected for a ma jority of plants and their installa tions there were several visits which were particularly interesting to the men among these was the h igh p r e s s u r c pumping station which is used for fire purposes only and whose equipment is remarkably efficient well protected and safe guarded such plants as the inter borough rapid transit power house and the edison waterside station were interesting in their re markable capacity and output the visit to the brooklyn navy yard was a wonderful opportunity to be come acquainted with the processes of construction of our modern man of-war this visit included a visit aboard the texas and the party were extremely fortunate in receiv ing permission to go through the large turrets for the 14-infch guns which guns bore the stamp of beth lehem steel co the power plant of the united electric co was at tractive in its newness of design and in its particularly modern equipment here mjany questions were asked and every manvw'as very anxious to see the results of mod ern practice in laying out and oper ating such a large plant the visits ended at noon on saturday janu ary 9th and from this time until sunday when most of the men re turned all took advantage of new york's social opportunities w j priestly m e 02 super intendent of the armor plate de partment of the bethlehem steel co gave the main talk of the meet ing his address took the form of true practical advice from a practi cal man to college men about to step into the outside world and strive for succesis his points were based upon experiences and observations in the great work which he now su perintends brief extracts from this talk follow : — your life after leaving college is going to change you will be thrown first of all into the life of the working man with its many sides and peculiarities under the three headings viz 1 what your attitude should be to your em ployer 2 your attitude toward your men 3 your attitude to ward yourself mr priestly gave helpful advice taken from his own observations you should be respectful to your employer whether he knows more than you do or not a young man must have a certain amount of dili gence in his work he must not be a rolling stone put yourself into your work with the idea that you can't do enough for the man you are working for make it a point to be on the job before he is in in the morning and don't ever be continued on fourth page ezra bowen b s 13 of the department of economics is giving a course in investments in beth lehem under the direction of roger w bab son the investment expert the course will be conducted through correspondence with the investment bankers bureau of which mr babson is the head and will be supplemented by lectures one evening a week by mr bowen the course is for the benefit of bank employees investors and pros pective investors it is carefully planned so as to form a systematic course beginning with elementary and more general principles and gradually leading up to the practical application of these principles to profitable rnivestin'g there will be a meeting of st paul's society in the church of the nativity parish house on thurs day february 25th at eight o'clock right rev frederick w beek marn dean of the church of the nativity will deliver ami illustrated lecture entitled a trip through the cathedral country of east anglia all members of the society are
