joint faculties of nearby colleges convene at lehigh price—five cents distinguished german diplomat describes present con dition of unsettled europe unstinted praise of dawes plan varsity courtmen probation rule and statesmen for a career of statesmanship and diplomacy at the present time there are varsity wrestlers start training over a thousand students in the reed and heilman are only varsity men available strong schedule on wednesday afternoon the members and friends of the alexander hamilton club had the unique pleasure of hearing a very interesting lecture and discussion on european affairs by a well known german diplo mat dr ernst jackh of ber lin germany dr jackh is a distinguished statesman who was a member of the german delegation that signed the treaties of versailles and genoa and was with stresemann when germany en tered the league of nations he also was the founder of the school of political sciences started in berlin about six years ago this institution has as its purpose the solving of in ternational political problems and the training of students dr ernsl jackh of berlin pres ident of the hpchschule fur politik distinguished publicist and author a member of the german delegations at ver sialles and genoa with strese mann at locarno and also at geneva when germany was re ceived into the league of na tions dr jackh was so well acquainted with a ceaseless store of interesting facts that he spoke on his subject with the greatest fluency a most immediately following the talk by this distinguished statesman a get-together sup per was served in which presi dent c r richards acted as host to the visiting groups welcoming them in the name of lehigh at eight o'clock in the eve continued on page four m & c road tour being students to trained diplo mats institutions and societies of a technical and scientific nature are well known in nearly every country in the world but this institution of political science is the first of its kind in the world and so far has proved itself to be so much of a success that the statesmen of the present ger man nation are required to be graduates or students of this body of learning so far has its fame spread that the car negie foundation has endowed a chair to be occupied by well known statesmen and educators from the many large countries of the world the first man who will occupy this endowment is mr shotwell a very well known economist in america at the lunch given for dr continued on page four mr wallace former na tional president of society to speak tonight to start the affair a well prepared address was given by lafayette muhlenberg mor avian and cedar crest repre sentative colleges in this sec tion of pennsylvania sent rep resentatives to drown hall wednesday night to discuss in teresting educational problems with the faculty of lehigh every year the faculties of these colleges meet as a group of as sociated colleges of the lehigh valley at the gathering held last spring at muhlenberg it was voted that a committee consisting of one member sel ected from each of the institu tions should be responsible for arranging the program for the succeeding year the institution that last entertained calling the committee together the com mittee meeting here at lehigh november 10 at the cah of dean g t ettinger of muh lenberg college set the date for the regular convention on december 1 and was respon sible for the meetings conduct ed wednesday in drown hall fraternities hold annual conference darcy to coach first meeting bartlett conducts unique contest frosh coach holds basket shooting tournament for plebes although extremely handi capped by the lack of a suit able floor to practice on the le high basketball team is grad ually rounding into the form which coach geary wishes to have prevalent throughout the ensuing collegiate season at the present writing it is understood that the varsity gym will not be available for use until about the fifteenth of this month tne uaiaage viuch the fire caused on tiit tugai of the lafayette stuoker vvao ex tensive necessitating u'.e com plete renovation of the a.vuiiy seats and the floor an aiuanpt will be maue to receive permis sion to use vie south side high school gymnasium for varsity practice lue court belonging to the betniehem steel com pany was given a to-o-t but was found unsauoiu^u.y for several reasons thus due the unfortunate circumstances which prevail both the frosh and varsity squads have been prutu^.ig on the upper floor they will con tinue to do so until better ar rangements can be made the large number of men out for their respective teams has made it exceedingly difficult for either coach to extend his com plete time to all of his candi dates if the practice tilts with the continued on page three 49 colleges represented in meeting of national inter fraternity council maloney wins faculty speakers all the topics discussed and acted upon this week by the lehigh university board of control of athletics were of an important nature the board very graciously granted a postponement to perm of the game scheduled for next year the request for postponement was made by the university of pennsylvania because of the of fer by chicago for a position on their schedule the only possible opening for such an en counter was october 22 the date set for the lehigh-penn game the lehigh 1927 sched ule now has an open date with no immediate suitable pros pects of filling it this act of lehigh's however was consid ered to be extremely sportsman like the board decided upon a rather drastic change in the eligibility rules for athletic participation eligibility rule no 6 which appears below has been changed to read no student on scholastic probation shall be eligible to represent the university in any athletic event a copy of the eligibility rules without the change in rule 6 follows : eligibility rules the rules formulated by the faculty start twelve members of squad to be lost in senior class ; line is hard hit frosh material the wrestling candidates are hard at work every afternoon under the efficient tutelage of coach sheridan who is greatly encouraged by the prospects of a successful season although only two of last year's varsity men are avail able this season — reed inter collegiate 115 pound champion and heilman of the 135 pound class — the candidates look pro mising in all but the unlimited class no heavyweights have as yet reported for either the varsity or freshman teams and billy sheridan is making a plea for a number of men who can qualify for this divi sion a continued lack of heavy weights during the season would make it necessary that 175 pound men meet unlimited weight opponents at a decided weight handicap or else that the unlimited bouts be forfeited by lack of anyone to wrestle this would necessitate the winning of four of the six remaining bouts in a dual meet to insure a brown and white victory which in itself would be a diffi cult task for any mat team up to date about eighty var sity aspirants have signed up and between fifty and sixty hopeful freshmen are devoting their afternoons to acquiring mat lore from billy sheridan who has his hands full trying to instill some of his skill into the candidates continued on page two the first varsity meet of the schedule is on january 15 and the road schedule of the mustard and cheese dramatic club is now nearing completion arrangements have already been made for giving perfor mances in philadelphia allen town and bethlehem while dates in new york washing ton and wilkes-barre are still under negotiation mr darcy of the ned wayburn studio who coached the performance so ably last year and who has recently coached the junior league of wilmington will do the managing again this year practice for the chorus has been held every wednesday evening for several months and the fellows who have been com ing out for these practices will stand a very good chance of making the chorus in the spring ned wayburn himself will pick the cast and the chor us about one month before the mustard and cheese society will give its performances ned wayburn is now consid ering two scenarios which have been submitted to him he will decide on the one which he con siders the better before christ mas and work will be started on writing the book immediate ly the book will be sent back to the studio for final correction as soon as finished the ned wayburn studio is considered one of the best in the country for producing amateur plays the continued on page three the eighteenth national inter fraternity conference was held in new york city on november 26 and 27 representatives of 49 colleges and universities from different sections of the country convened at the hotel pennsylvania to hold their an nual discussion of the many problems that confront the fra ternities of today the list of those invited to attend the session included the deans and presidents of scores of colleges and other prominent men interested in the workings of the inter-fraternity council the officers of the conference were chairman jones illin ois secretary porton stan ford treasurer pierce lowa state r j purdy 28 was lehigh's delegate several points of great inter est were brought up in the dis cussions that took place a survey of the different rushing systems throughout the entire nation showed the deferred rushing system a failure the report claimed that the lehigh method of rushing was the best in the country another inter esting fact was that in most colleges and universities the majority of fraternities attain an average in scholastic achieve ment as high and in some cas es higher as the non-fraternity groups however this is not true at lehigh many speeches of great inter est and value were included in continued on page three with the lafayette game marking the close of what was probably the most disastrous football season lehigh has ex perienced in recent years we begin to hear murmurs regard ing our prospects for next year from one standpoint prospects certainly appear anything but promising just now twelve members of the varsity squad will be lost by graduation of this number three are back field men and the rest line men practically the entire line will be lost including captain littell thum harmon crane wilson and martin however only two first string backs will graduate hayes and ford hence the coaching staff will face the problem of starting the season with an inexperienc ed line and a veteran backfield however with burke holtz clark and alderman back the ends at least should be well taken care of and j levitz waldman bruenning scholl and kirkpatrick should form the nucleus for a fairly strong line with hand o'callaghan continued on page four tonight the physics lecture room will be the scene of the first meeting of the proposed industrial engineering society of lehigh university this new society hopes to affiliate with the american society of indus trial engineers mr l w wallace the first president of that national organization will be present to help professor larkin and professor caroth ers get things started and in the hands of the students them selves mr wallace is a well-known engineer he graduated from the agricultural and mechanical college of texas and from purdue university with the degree of m e after a short apprenticeship with the gulf coast and santa fe railway he returned to purdue as an in structor gradually rising to the rank of professor of rail way and industrial manage ment in 1912 mr wallace again entered the industrial field as the assistant general manager of the diamond chain and mfg co he has been appointed to many industrial committees chief among them being industrial survey com mittee of the s ate of indiana vice-chairman of the commit these three men are for wards and are included among the ninetten who have survived the cut which coach bartlett this competition was an in novation introduced by bart lett and consisted entirel yof shooting both long and short shots shots from different an gles and shots from the foul line constituted the test and the one who was the most accu rate was declared the victor maloney scored on twenty-six shots and schultz was runner up with twenty-five many ac counted for twenty-three the first two men were awarded silver and bronze medals re spectively members of the frosh bas ketball squad monopolized the honors in the recent basket shooting contest for freshmen promoted by assistant profes sor f c bartlett w l ma loney won first place from m schultz by the margin of one successful shot and r h many was third tee on elimination of waste in industry secretary of the com mittee on since football ended among those showing great promise for the 30 team are leibowitz mccarthy smith scott turn and surre all swimming free style schwartz serber and sulken in the breast stroke dinsmore in the back stroke and davis in the diving it is evident that the^e is a dearth of material in the latter department and all freshmen who are versed in the essentials of diving are urged to ager was formally accepted notice at a meeting of the brown and white board last tues day the following competi tors were passed upon and admitted to the staff john m blackmar robert b sax august wiesner john i kirkpatrick and thomas m brennan of the class of 29 and donald l wright rich ard s meyers and newlin f davis of the class of 30 it was further decided at this meeting to hold another competition for members of the freshman class at the beginning of the second sem ester this is due to the lack of interest shown by this class in reporting for the fall competition just over there are at present five vancancies to be filled from this compe tition members of the class of 30 are urged to bear this in mind as it is hoped that more interest will be mani fested in this important col
