do so by signing up in drown hall next week twenty thousand attend classic lafayette booters lose to lehigh defeat of maroon closes brown and white sea son successfully enthusiastic pep meeting proves genuine backing for the big game huge parade score 2-0 surprise to the majority of the adherents of both the schools although everything in foot ball logic predicted an easton victory the idea was never for a moment entertained that mc cracken's charges would tally thirty-five points while holding their opponents scoreless it was a decidedly colorful crowd of gridiron enthusiasts first lehigh grid stars honored at friday's banquet as the sun set last saturday evening the clock in old south college on college hill pealed ominously for the eighth con secutive year the powerful maroon and white eleven had annexed its biggest game of the year that afternoon when they vanquished a weaker but nevertheless fighting lehigh team the victory marked the com pletion of an undefeated year for the easton collegians and equivalently concluded one of the most disastrous seasons ever recorded in the annals of lehigh football the conquest was the greatest triumph that the victors have achieved over their rivals since 1905 when they administered a 53-0 de feat the large score was surely a six men of first brown and white football team are guests of alumni that packed the stands of the unfinished stadium in refer ence to the new athletic arena it might be added that it is one of the most up-to-date plants in the collegiate world with the exception of its seating capa city the largest crowd attending the classic of pennsylvania numbered close to twenty thou sand the prevalent weather conditions made furs and coon skins a luxury entertainment of various phases was furnish ed by some of the fans who were feeling happy as one fan expressed it it was a re plica of a yale - princeton clash con on page 4 col 1 ) it is worthy to mention the excellent spirit shown by the two student bodies not to for awards made senior class book makes progress l v faculties to convene here ballots must be turned in immediately if seniors desire space dr jackh prominent diplo mat of germany to be principal speaker pictures soon annual meeting the 1926 lehigh-lafayette gridiron struggle was charac terized by numerous incidents which are a traditional part of all football classics today at 1 45 p m the lehigh band 75 strong entered from the eastern end of the field and was greeted by a din from their cohorts their marching was reminiscent of that dis played by the west pointers and brought forth much favorable comment from the spectators henry sampson and johnnie knebels led as they marched past the lafayette sections playing a snappy air and then brought the band to a halt in front of the lehigh cheering sections where more applause greeted them the cheerlead ers led the student body in singing hail the college and then the phrase the old fight was echoed across the gridiron for some time five minutes after the le high band had made its debut the maroon musical organiza tion appeared and claimed at tention sixty-four students clad in dark red sweaters bear ing the white letters l 8 and white trousers were pre ceded by their leader deftly manipulating his baton they very courteously rendered everybody takes his hat off to lehigh in front of the north stands which were oc cupied by the lehigh rooters and then proceeded to play for their own cheering section both bands occupied side con on page 3 col 4 yesterday preparations for maintaining lehigh's para mount position in the basketball world were begun coach roy g geary the successor to charles f lingle as the brown and white mentor has decided to begin practice this week in order to secure as early a start as possible and candidates for the team as well as for the managerial competition should report at once the possibility that the uni versity will again be represent ed by a strong quintet and consequently that the reputa tion established by last year's team will be upheld is very great for the new coach will have a wealth of material from which to select the team only one of the six men who were awarded major letters in this minor sport last winter will of necessity fail to respond to the call that one benny wein stein who played four years and captained the team that made history will be greatly missed this season his equal will not be found but his five team-mates captains-elect c m schaub and c l smith for wards e h schaub center and w b billmeyer and w h lister guards are again in college and will constitute the nucleus around which geary will build the 1926-1927 quin tet the fact that each of these men is a star at his favorite position that each is capable of playing now on exhibit in fac ulty room mem bldg nothing could have better re vealed the staunch and unquen chable spirit of old lehigh than last friday night's smoker enthusiasm and pep welled high within everyone faith and the determination to back the team dominated the tone of the whole meeting despite the past and the doubt cast on the future lehigh stood up as a single man and cried fight ." at lehigh was out heart and soul to win he was accorded a mighty round of ap plause for the crowd knew that he and his men were there to put their all into the affair charlie eastman was also very brief in his words he paid tribute to the lehigh spir it saying that it was one of the big things that enabled the brown and white men to go on with their fight pat pazetti came out amid a storm of applause pat once fought for lehigh as the men for whom he was speaking fight and he spoke out of experience he claimed that the lehigh team was perfect mentally full of the determination to play with their mightiest efforts he praised the students for the marvelous support they have given the team and as sured them that no matter how the game resulted nothing could be regretted con on page 3 col 4 then bosey appeared before the yelling crowd he spoke of the three attitudes that may ex ist in regard to a game there might be pessimism from which there must be an immediate es con on page 2 col 6 the lehigh booters ended their season on saturday morn ing with a 2-0 victory over the lafayette soccermen this successful finish of a none too successful season marks the sixth decision in the last seven years that the soccer team has won from the arch rivals from down the river coach carpenter's proteges played a fast hard-kicking game throughout and it was on ly during the early part of the fray that the maroon booters seriously threatened the brown and white goal the consistent defensive play of collins and dixon was a mighty factor in the repulse of the opponents during this early part of the game and their long hard drives during the latter part of the tilt kept the ball in lafay ette territory for most of the remaining time two boots by captain nev ins one during the first period and the other during the sec ond half were responsible for the winning tallies nevins played his usual stellar game at center forward and as in the other games of the season was an important factor in the achievement of victory this victory of saturday atones in a large degree for a season which has been produc tive of only two other victor ies out of eight scheduled games victories have been re turned only over temple army and lafayette but as in other competitions a decision over lafayette is the all-important consideration of the schedule the defeats which have all radio club buys new equipment chickering chosen to lead harriers on last friday night the ho tel bethlehem was the scene of a reunion of more than two hundred lehigh grads the affair was arranged and con ducted by the lehigh home club with eugene c grace president of the bethlehem steel company acting as toast master the events of the eve ning were concluded by a ban quet given in honor of those football men who gave football its start at lehigh six of the football veterans of lehigh's first gridiron team were introduced and they re lated some interesting experi ences of the first season these men were j s robeson 87 captain george neilson 85 ; john ledoux 85 ; dr h w frauenthal 87 frank smith 87 and d k nicholson 86 men who played on the team but were unable to be present were c b davis 87 c m tolman 85 robert r hed ley 88 m a dewitt howe and f k knorr 87 while those players who have since passed into the great beyond are richard harding davis wm bradford w a mcfar len john howard wm r pierce sam v stocton and s s voorhees each of the six men present con on page 2 col 7 seniors encouraged to do thesis work through organization new captain has been a con sistent winner on squad for two years kenton chickering a junior in the college of business ad ministration has been elected to succeed donald g aitken as captain of the cross-country team for next season he will do well if he emulates the retir ing captain who undoubtedly was one of the most inspiring and capable leaders of recent brown and white hill-and-dale squads con on page 3 col 1 ) chickering whose home is in oil city pa has completed two year's service in this sport professor bradley stoughton the head of the department of metallurgy has been appointed by the mcgraw-hill book co to act as chairman and consult ing editor of a committee form ed to write a group of text books on metallurgy a group of eight of the foremost metal lurgists in the country were placed on the commitee col umbia university the massa chusetts institute of technolo gy and u s bureau of stan dards are some of the most im portant organizations represent ed the committee has for its purpose the writing of a series of books concerning this topic general metallurgy non-fer rous metallurgy and mettallo graphy are some of the more important subjects to be treat ed professor stoughton con ducted a conference of the members about six months ago and the outline for the first book metallurgy for engin eers was drawn up he and con on page 4 col 6 the senior class book com mittee has been progressing rapidly with the senior section of the epitome within the last two weeks all but twenty of the ballots have been turned in to the committee but since the cooperation of the rest of the class has been so great the committee decided to continue with the work and to omit the remainder of the ballots if not in promptly many good snap shots have already been handed in and all others should be in the hands of the committee not later than december fifteenth con on page 3 col 1 ) each senior will be given four sittings when his picture is taken ; and about a week af terward the photographer will return to bethlehem for one in order to clarify the assess ment question the committee announced that the fourteen dollar assessment pays for one copy of the epitome for the seniors the cost of their cut in the book and the cost of the space for their write-ups and for the space of the opinion sec tion all senior photographs will be in the hands of the en gravers by december 15 and if the assessment is not paid by that time no cut will be made the photographer from the white studio will be located in drown hall the week after the thanksgiving vacations from november 29 until december 4 a list of the appointments made will be a philadelphia sec tion drown hall 12:30 p m luncheon for the visiting members of the mathematical association of america drown hall the beautiful art exhibit now on display in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building has attracted many lovers of art at the afternoon session last monday nearly fif ty persons visited the exhibit and in the evening a still larg er number were present there is a total of fifty paintings on exhibition twenty - five of which are works of contem porary american artists and the other twenty-five reproduc tions in color of paintings by great masters loaned by the american federation of arts the committee in charge of the exhibition is composed of dr natt m emery chairman professor phillip m palmer and howard s leach librarian the exhibit will be open daily until november 24 from 12:30 until 5:30 in the afternoons and from 7 until 9 in the eve nings there are about twelve of the paintings which are unusually fine some of them representing the best work of the leading contemporaries last week there was a meet ing at lehigh of a committee representing the various colleg es in the lehigh valley every year it is customary for the faculties of all the institutions of higher learning in this re gion to gather at one of the col leges the committee met for the purpose of forming plans for this year"s conference the committee composed of dean ettinger of muhlenberg professor steever of lafayette dean rau of moravian dr roemeger of cedar crest and professor gipson of lehigh decided that the meeting of the various faculties should this year be held at lehigh on wed nesday december ist the event will start in the after noon and will extend into the evening after dinner is served at the lehigh university cafe teria in the program for the evening the faculty members present will be divided into groups for the purpose of dis cussing various subjects of in terest to the universities con on page 2 col 7 last year the faculties of the colleges in the lehigh valley met at muhlenberg and the year previous to that at lafay ette these annual gatherings have proved to be of special value to the various universities which participate the pri mary purpose of the practice is to bring the institutions of higher education of the locality into a closer relationship it is known that when the relations between colleges are intimate the forces of cooperation are set at work and in education this force is strong the fac since lehigh university is primarily an engineering school its interest in the activities of engineering societies natur ally
