the former members of her faculty at the annual celebration of founder's day in packer memorial church university park to-morrow morn ing when the degree of doctor of laws will be conferred upon pro fessor mansfield merriman and up on professor edward h williams jr professor merriman whose fame as an author and teacher is international was head of the civil engineering course at lehigh for nearly thirty years professor will iams for twenty-one years headed the departments of mining engi neering and geology now sepa rate and remains a lecturer of the university he is likewise widely known the founder's day address will be delivered by dr charles will iam macfarlan.d 76 the eminent economist and writer on finance of philadelphia there will be remarks by dr henry r price 70 of brooklyn n v president of the board of trustees dr henry stur gis drinker president of the uni versity samuel d warriner 90 of philadelphia a member of the board of trustees and george p flick 14 president of the senior class epitome prizes announced in view of the great rivalry which exists between the two lower class es both sophomores and freshmen have turned out in creditably large numbers for the baseball track and football teams for the last few years the freshmen have trimmed the sophomores and gained the right to banish both black socks and i ties and the freshman cap on sun days from all appearances the freshmen this year have as good a chance to repeat this trick as in other years and the games will most probably be closely contested and very interesting in their track material the 17 men have excep tionally good runners but it must be remembered that the sopho mores have practically their entire veteran team and that team last year was an unusual combination also in baseball the freshmen have a promising team quite up to the standard of the sophs in football however they are slightly handicap ped on account of lack of weight the sports will he held on wed nesday afternoon october bth at 2 o'clock having been postponed from saturday afternoon october l ili on account of the football game with the carlisle indians the men in charge of the different teams ur gently request all lower classmen who have any ability in one or more of the three sports to report as soon as possible since there remain only a few days of practice before the day set little organization has yet been made as only preliminary practice dominated the first part of the week in the course of a few days teams will be selected from the available material and a more systematic preparation will be made the cap tains have not been appointed hut this matter will be adjusted soon the sophomores have not turned out to date in as large numbers as the freshmen and but little has keen done in any of the sports in track it is expected that last year's lean llurke carlson wylie mudge benson and fair will be on hand in baseball he same condi tion is found those who are ex pected to turn out buxton and schwaner the first meeting of the 1913 epitome board was held in drown memorial hall on wednesday af ternoon the general outline of the work was discussed and the members were assigned to their va rious departments not much could be done in the way of getting a defi nite outline of the book because it is not known for certain whether the senior class is going to incor porate their book with the epitome the board decided to offer the following prizes for the best sketch es and photographs submitted for this year's epitome for the best sketches a first prize of 5 and a second prize of a leather-bound epitome ; for the best photographs a first prize of 5 and a second prize of one cloth-bound epitome the board is desirous of obtain ing a large number of each partic ularly the sketches and all persons intending to submit any contribu lions or wishing further informa tion regarding i he same are request ed to see cameron hoffman art editor in drown memorial hall back field one of best in college ranks and line is work ing well the contest on taylor field to morrow afternoon with the carlisle indians promises to be one of the best games of the season although the indians have practically a new team and have not the renowned thorpe and powell in the lineup they will present an eleven which will be coached up to the highest point during the week coach warner has been putting into prac tice many new plays designed for the lehigh game and hardly a day has passed in which the men have not been put through a hard scrim mage up to date the redskins have been victorious over lebanon valley albright and west virginia wesleyan large scores did not feature any of these games but it was shown that the indians had a strong team welch and guyon two of the back-field men proved themselves to be fast and clever players their long runs closely re sembling those of their former mate thorpe the indians appa rently lack place-kickers which in present-day football means a great handicap the scores of games al ready played by them are as fol lows : — indians 26 lebanon valley 0 indians 25 ; albright 0 indians 25 ; west virginia wes leyan 0 the brown and white team is in excellent shape all of the men who participated in the albright game with the exception of fisher were on hand monday afternoon the practice monday afternoon was light and • the varsity did not en ter into any scrimmage tuesday afternoon assistant coach pazzet ti took charge of the back field men and punters the backs being rehearsed in catching punts and the kickers in getting their punts off more speedily the postponement of the western maryland game de prived the team of a tryout but the afternoon was well utilized in a blachbrand talk and with a discus sion of the new rules with a line which few at present but they are sufficiently nu merous to suggest that new ideas as to teaching are spreading at any rate in science a brilliant instance is an elementar ', i eatise on cal culus by william s franklin bar ry macnutt and rollin l charles of lehigh university the authors south bethlehem pa in which the higher branches of mathematics are explained in a manner so at tractive that not only students with the needed elementary grounding will be drawn to study them but others will be tempted to acquire the simple mathematical foundation that will enable them to follow the authors demonstrations they ex plain briefly and clearly on what simple bases the various lines of mathematical speculation rest the many uses they serve in science and practical life and bring their utility
