prominent speaker here sunday football practice on wednesday sophomores win from freshmen vol xxi lehigh men conduct camp for bethlehem yonngsters dur ing summer prof scott nearing of the whar ton school will address christian association practice starts in wrestling condition of the team enough men for three squads on field light scrim mage held with the exception of hoban and cahall men are in good shape prof scott nearing of the whar ton school university of pennsyl vania faculty will address this sun day's meeting of the y m c a in drown hall at 6.30 p m llis talk will deal with the challenge of modern economic conditions to the best that is in college men to im prove and humanize these condi tions the record of prof nearing is particularly brilliant for a man still in the twenties the macmillan prof scott nearing instruction will be given every monday and thursday after noon at four chance to make team this is one sport where a man can develop himself into team material practice has already been begun in preparation for next spring's season in wrestling and will be car ried on until the season opens early in february . arrangements have been made whereby the squad may have the use of the colosseum for the time being practice will be held at four o'clock on mondays and thursdays the work will be in the hands of captain gatch and other mcra of last year's squad and will consist merely of instruction in the rudiments of the sport this ar rangement offers an extremely good opportunity to green men and it is hoped that many will avail them selves of this chance to learn the science of the game material appear plentiful in the lower vvetghttclgsses ; but all who can do so are urged to re port the unfortunate experience of last year's team in the intercol legiates show how weak a team is which is not supported by a large squad of second-string men ( in side of an all-american selection continued on third page lehigh men as big brothers to the poor kids of the bethlehems conducted during the summer a camp on the upper end of island park which is five miles above easton in the lehigh river the camp opened july sth and lasted until july 16th it was con ducted under the leadership of a h frey and c e ekstrand and with the help of l y chow o boucher b h spencer and e j kesler being the first year the y m c a has undent n a proposi tion of this kind it - : ; s necessary on account of fina-miiu reasons to begin on a small scale thirteen kids were selected for the outing by the associated charities which organization investigated the home life of the families they picked the most troublesome boys in town for this change of environment to insure sufficient funds for the venture a concert was given last spring by the lehigh and haver ford musical clubs in drown hall cooking utensils and other camp equipment were secured through the kindness of mrs john l stewart write most of their publications as lowing mr r w blake mr a n been obtained the practice on wednesday af ternoon showed that the team is rapidly approaching its mid-season form a lengthy scrimmage was held special attention being paid to the linemen kicking and passing ( wing to injuries received in the indian contest two of the men will be out of the game for several weeks hoban wdio is badly bruis ed and shaken up must rest about a week and cahall with a badly bruised back will be forced to hold off nearly a month a new man has been tried in the back field and promises well fred green who has been playing end has been practicing regularly now in the evening at seven o'clock i mans were made for installing of suitable lights in the range and a mat has been ob tamed for the prone bench . during practice several goo scores were made and it looks as lehigb football team will line up against franklin and marshall this game will be in all proba bility a bard-fought one as frank lin and marshall have a strong team this year they held the uni versity of pennsylvania to a thir teen to v score in their game this year they have also shown up well in practice since then lehigb will suffer greatly by the loss of their star half-back mohan who is out el the game on account of torn ligaments in bis shoulder coach eceady is whipping the team into shape and they all expect to win franklin and marshall will do her best to get this game as it is one of their big contests win track and base ball events in founder's day sports on wednesday football goes to 1917 freshmen easily win the football game by score of 16 to 0 for the first time in three years the sophomores won the majority of the founder's day sports which had been postponed from saturday until wednesday all of the con tests were hard-fought the winners carrying off the laurels in track and baseball while the freshmen had an easy task to win the football game as a result of the fresh men losing two of the three games it will be necessary for them to con tinue to wear black socks and neck ties on week-days and on sundays it will not be their privilege to wear any hat other than the regu lation freshman cap * * * * starter sproul pulled the trigger of the firing gun for the five-man team promptly at 1.45 p m on account of the alterations to the athletic field which are now in progress it was necessary to run the relay on the grass around the football field notwithstanding the time of three minutes and twenty three and two-fifths seconds was very good becker 17 took the pole but never 16 led at the end of the lap by a safe margin ga briel 17 recovered some of the lost ground in his race with mudge 16 kaufman 16 increased the lead when lie ran with vonmerig ermghausen 17 and carlson fin ished his lap far ahead of b.acon 17 it was an easy thing for cap tain burke the varsity star to win the day for the sophomores al though captain anway 17 short ened the lead to a great degree ** * * from the time when the ball was put in play it was a fore-gone con clusion that the freshmen would conquer their sworn enemies in football and the score of 16 to 0 shows by what a wide margin they lid win this event at no time was the freshman goal in any real dan ger so that in the last two periods of the game every man that liiid been out for he team was given a chance to win his numerals tin first score was counted on a safety in the first quarter hig giris received a punt on the three yard line but was immediately tackled by paul ; lie called for a kick formation but failed to catch the ball when it was passed to him standing behind tlie goal-line
