cotillion proves main attraction of house party first lehigh-lafayette bat tle to be staged in new arena dance excels all previous entertainments in splendor aggressive backfi c 1 d sweeps around ends for repeated gains a fine job much improved 300 present new lafayette stadium egated to have charge of this immense undertaking and it retained col 800z — one of the members of the board of trus tees — as consulting engineer under the supervision of col booz ambitious plans were drawn up for a magnificient stadium providing facilities not only for football but also for baseball and track suffi cient space for a full-sized base i ball diamond and a quarter mile 1 track with a 220-yard straight ! away then came the problem of determining a site for the stu ! pendous structure ; a location several hundred yards north i east of march field on the side of the rock-bound hill upon j which the buildings of the col lege are erected was finally chosen the hill of practically solid rock sloped down at a steep angle and a small stream ran through what is now the center of a splendid field of turf it was an enormous un dertaking to blast away a por tion of the hillside and using the rock thus obtained with much additional fill to con struct a level surface large enough for the purposes for which the stadium was design ed d a royer was selected for the responsible position of res ident engineer and the bid of the edward-dunn co inc of greensburg pa was accepted for the construction work these contractors under the constant supervision of mr royer started construction about eighteen months ago and since the work has been prog ressing favorably it is expect ed that the present contract will be completed in time for the opening whistle on the 20th of this month con on page 3 col 6 after the playing field was suitably leveled and a thorough underground drainage system installed the task of erecting the stadium was to be faced on the south side the task was comparatively a simple one — that of constructing tier after tier of seats upon a solid rock foundation and braced upon the rock of the hillside on the the traditional lehigh-la fayette gridiron battle one of the football classics of the east will be staged this year in a new locality the new lafay ette stadium previous to this year the games played in eas ton were fought to a finish on the turf of march field and sat urday will be the first that the brown and white gridmen ever trotted into the new arena because of the throngs whicn crowded march field for the va rious lafayette games and es pecially for the lehigh classic the trustees of laiayette deem ed it advisable to authorize and to undertake the construction of a new stdauim — one which would eventually be the equal of those of other colleges the athletic committee of the board of trustees was del polar explorer tells of north lafayette frosh win annual tilt three new teams are on football schedule lehigh's harriers take third place at annual meet people and customs of arc tic are explained in in teresting talk lehigh freshmen show promising form but need experience making the best showing in years aitken and sames rank high chief attractions will be princeton u of p and lafayette the biggest social attraction of house party the sophomore cotillion was a marked suc cess probably no function of a more colorful character has ev er featured any lehigh house party certainly none before has rivalled friday evening's stellar entertainment the gymnasium was tasteful ly decorated and provided just the required background to set off the beautiful gowns of the many pretty girls who gathered from eastern united states if any man present gave up a moment of the pleasure-filled ihours to step aside and watch the happy couples dance about his first impression was that of color wild splashes of it every hue and done to every fashion yet withal blending artistical ly as though the mind of one great artist had conceived the pattern and a michael angelo had held the brush but more could be discerned among the three hundred who yielded to the spirit of the hour there was too a happy contentment to be found at the cotillion and it was this that made the occasion so decidedly success ful bucknell here alfred wins last saturday lehigh tri umphed over rutgers 14-0 for its first victory of the sea son a mud-laden field slowed up both teams though it made the game none the less inter esting the brown and white un covered a diversified attack that completely upset the scar let a powerful running at tack in which lehigh circled the rutgers ends for long gains proved to be the most consistent ground-gainer the lehigh team showed a marked improvement over its previous games several new plays were introduced the for ward passing attack was highly developed as evidenced by the fact that three passes out of a possible four were successful accounting for substantial yard age and the running attack showed a well-arranged inter ference lehigh's punting was more effective than that of rut gers con on page 4 col 6 in the beginning of each half the scarlet team present ed a heavy plunging attack that constantly pierced the middle of the brown line in this way they succeeded in making two first downs soon after the op ening kick-off however the additional names of party guests last r o t c drill the r o t c drill on tuesday will be the last of the open drills this fall ev ery winter there is a layoff on account of the cold and snowy weather the hours for which the drills are sche duled will be free and stud ents may do as they please the drills will be continued again in the spring about the fifteenth of april next year the guns will remain in the racks in the armory for winter classroom drill wrestlers have stiff schedule lack of space prevented printing complete list last friday intercollegiate teams are weakened by many graduations led by captain aitken the lehigh cross-country team es tablished itself as one of the best which has ever represent ed the university by annexing third honors in the annual championship run of the mid dle atlantic states collegiate athletic association held over the van cortlandt park course in new york city last satur day con on page 2 col 5 aitken persevered with the leaders throughout the entire six miles which were covered with thomson last saturday the freshman football team was defeated in the final game of its schedule by the lafayette frosh the battle with the strong maroon team from easton was played on a muddy field in taylor stadium the final score being 21-0 with the starting whistle davidowitz lehigh quarter back kicked off to the lafay ette frosh shiddel one of the maroon halfbacks received the kick and ran it up to his thir ty-yard line after a series of line plunges the freshmen from easton had advanced to le high's thirty-five yard line here they lost the ball on downs and after three attempts of the brown and white to gain through the line did not avail they punted the first quarter continued with lafay ette piercing lehigh's line steadily but the home team held them from scoring the second quarter started with the ball in the lehigh yearling's possession johnston threw a long pass to davidow who ran for a twenty-five yard gain the south mountaineers advanced down the field until they were in position for a field goal davidow made an attempt to kick a three point er but it fell short lafayette put the ball into play and gain ed ten yards through the le high line on the next play twigger the brown and white right tackle was hurt and con on page 2 col 3 con on page 3 col i ) professor neil carothers director of the college of bus iness administration was the guest and speaker at the reg ular weekly luncheon of the mathematics department pro fessor carothers succeeded in very nicely showing the close relation that the science of mathematics bears to the so cial sciences particularly pro fessor carothers said does the true value of mathematics show last thursday morning at the south side high school the three under classes had the pleasure of hearing a very in teresting lecture by a well known polar explorer mr w elmer ekblaw of the univer sity of illinois and for four years connected with the don old macmillan expedition to the north pole mr ekblaw was in the arc tic from 1914 until 1918 and in that time came in close con tact with the inhabitants of i north greenland who were the subjects of his talk on beyond the northern lights the land and life of the polar eskimo there were to be slides to il lustrate the lecture but unfor tunately the projector could not be focused properly and the slides were not used the macmillan expedition had as its base a small village of polar eskimos about 850 miles south of the north pole although it was almost at the top of the world the climate was not as cold as some reg ions farther south the swift currents of water flowing thru the straits from the sea to baf fin bay kept the water from freezing and this open water did much to equalize the tem perature at times however it registered as much as 65 de grees than fifty men in addition to this num ber there are of course many men who are now engaged in other sports these men while they do lose somewhat in prac tice nevertheless will be in good condition when they are ready for the mat the words of greeting which coach sheridan gave out were full of advice to the men he assured the group that every position on the team is open for competition and will
