good attendance club meets next time at leonard hall swarthmore smoker on friday night drew an unusually large crowd lehigh smothers swarthmore 50 to 0 the garnet team was outclassed from the beginning lehigh's line impregnable on the defense whole team aggressive interesting selections mr walters the registrar gives enjoyable selections from the woods the game marked by spectacular plays seventy and eighty yard runs by hoban and cahall respectively many twenty-five and thirty five yard runs the arts and science club held its first regular meeting in christ mas hall on thursday evening there were present about fifteen members and the object of the meeting was primarily to get to gether and talk over ways and means of making this the best club in college mr r w walters the registrar gave a reading before the mem bers of poems selected from the woods by douglas mallock mr mallock is a western poet who has spent much time in the forests writing songs for lumbermen his poems have traveled by word of mouth from pioneer to pioneer ev ery person present voted that he had never heard read or read him self any poem which could surpass the selections from the woods in regard to simplicity clearness human feeling and love for nature to-day is one of these poems of life which has been printed many times in reading possession one is made to see and feel everything from the view-point of an unedu cated — in books and honest nature loving lumberman it was announced that the next meeting of the club will be held in leonard hall on the invitation of the warden and the several mem bers the time of and the program for this second meeting will be an nounced in the brown and white a week prior so that everybody may have a chance to arrange his work in such a way as to enable him to be present lafayette game seats cheering section seats for the lafayette game may be obtained at drown hall to-morrow november 12th from 1 to 3 p m this will be the only chance to get cheering section seats as those not disposed of at this time will be put on pub lic sale minstrel show a rehearsal for the end-men of the minstrel show will be held in drown hall on wednesday no vember 12th at 1.30 p m haverford smoker the haverford smoker will be held in the colosseum next friday evening at eight o'clock enthusiastic speeches talks by dr drinker and mem bers of the coaching staff and others on friday night november 7th the eve of the swarthmore game the first smoker of the season was held in drown hall a large and enthusiastic crowd took advantage of this opportunity for arousing the old lehigh spirit and filled the lower floor of drown hall to overflowing the program of entertainment was opened by pi ano selections by hill 16 and carl son 17 a review of the athletic history of lehigh from the begin ning of the athletic reform by mr savage down to the present day was given by dr drinker in his short but enthusiastic talk follow ing this address came a selection by the emails quartet composed of bodine 15 mitman 15 wynne 16 and hagenbuch 16 the ap plause of the student-body brought several encores each one worthy of another capt flick gave a short talk on the developments in the football team and was greeted with great applause while billy sher idan and cassidy were preparing for their wrestling bout the student body rehearsed a few songs the wrestling bout followed with jim my mahoney refereeing and was an unusual exhibition of the science of wrestling the result was pro nounced a draw the next number was a selection by the band which has lately witnessed a revival the rendition of its selection was greet ed with the usual sign of satisfac tion which was only appeased by an encore bosey reiter appeared at this time and after lifting the fleecy clouds from the breast of old south mountain his address took the form of an emphatic talk on the prospects for the coming football games his encourage ment instilled spirit into all and he was greeted with an enthusiastic round of applause the remainder of the program was largely musical consisting of songs selection by the consisting of songs selections by the lin sextet the mandolin selection was heartily received and forecasts a successful mandolin club after announcements by mick el 14 and church 14 the smoker broke up with the singing of the alma mater following the smoker came a peerade through the bethlehems haverford special the special train for the haver ford game will leave south beth lehem on the p & r railroad at 12.30 on saturday november 15th the train will arrive at haverford in time for the game and will lie over in philadelphia from 6.00 to 12.00 that night the round-trip fare is 2.40 in response to the general public appeal of the treasurer of the mora vian college and theological semi nary the trustees of lehigh uni versity have contributed 100 to ward the fund for the immediate needs of moravian college students the fire which damaged the main building of moravian college to the extent of 50,000 on october 31st burned out the dormitories on the top floor and a number of the stu dents lost all of their books furni ture and clothing other than that which they wore on the morning after the fire president drinker who was in new york city at the time telegraphed a message tendering to moravian college the use as far as possible of buildings and dormitory accom modations at the university and vice-president emery and mr w a wilbur chairman of the exec utive committee of the board of trustees called on dr a g rau dean of the college and expressed lehigh's sympathy and offer of dor mitory and other facilities it prov ed however that displaying fine spirit and resourcefulness the col lege resumed work last monday morning on its own location class es being held in the college gymna sium and in the laurel street chapel the open letter of dr deschwein itz the treasurer as published in the globe and in the times last monday was as follows : to the editor of the times sir : — thanking you very heart ily for the sympathetic account of the disaster at the moravian col lege and theological seminary which appeared in your issue of saturday evening may i ask you to give me a little space to call at tention to the most pressing need at the college just now most of the students living in the dormitories lost everything they had except the clothes on their backs and measures must be taken at once to supply them with the ab solutely necessary clothing and the books to continue their collegiate work to meet this immediate need will require at least 1,000 within the next few days any friends who are willing to help in this emer continued on third page college lecture the speaker at the college lecture to be held in the chapel next fri day morning at 11 o'clock will be captain j b white president of ihe missouri lumber and land ex change company of kansas city mo captain white will speak up on his experience with young men as he has found them in the lumber business dwelling upon the quali ties that led to success in notable cases captain white is known as a vigorous and entertaining speaker attendance of students is re quired kicking off to lehigh's fifteen-yard line green caught the kick and i ran it back ten yards before he was downed chenoweth gained three yards and hoban five yards respect ively around swarthmore's right end hoban again took the ball in the next play and made it first down through right tackle crichton's line plunging earned another first down although it took three tries to do it keady lost a yard on a double pass hoban made four yards this put the ball on swarth more's twenty-five-yard line chen oweth on a fake full-back play ran back a few steps and threw the ball to fred green green scored a touchdown the first of the game mohan kicked out to chenoweth he failed to kick the goal lehigh again chose to receive and mackissick kicked to hoban on the brown and white's ten-yard line superb interference and splendid open field running enabled him to return the ball to mid-field chen oweth failed to gain in the next two plays and a forward pass proved un successful hoban punted to mac kissick who fumbled bianco re covered the ball for lehigh on the twenty-two-yard line fred green was hurt in the play and sawtelle was substituted in a mass play crichton advanced the ball two yards hoban scored the second touchdown on a forward pass from chenoweth after kicking out to keady he kicked the goal making the score 13 to 0 continued on second page stevens replaced howell at left end chenoweth took the kick-off and ran the ball back to mid-field lie was loudly cheered crichton hit ihe line for four yards chen oweth then brought the crowd to its feet by a forty-yard run on a shift play keady did not gain on the second down but swarthmore was off side and was penalized five yards which made first down crichton advanced the ball a yard in two plays lutz for swarthmore in tercepted a forward pass and went thirty yards before he was downed he also advanced the ball three yards on the next play clime hit the line for a yard melick failed to gain but on an offside penalty took the ball five yards nearer lc high's goal the same thing hap pened on the play following except that mckissick carried the ball purbarroyy lost a yard which was augmented five more because his team was off side a forward pass proved unsuccessful mckissick elected to try to score on a forward pass but durbarrow was thrown on the lehigh team showed their ability to come back when they smothered swarthmore on satur day 50 to 0 the superiority of the lehigh eleven was evident from the first few minutes of play and only the condition of the field kept the score from being larger the field was a sea of mud and the con tinued downpour during the larger part of the game made it necessary to shorten the fourth period to eight minutes lehigh won the toss and mc kissick kicked off to fred green the little quarterback then got a way for a twenty-five-yard run a round left end the swarthmore line held for two downs but on the third chenoweth made a nice twen ty-yard pass to p>ed green who aided by lloban's good interference placed the pigskin behind swarth more's goal line the ball having been in play only five minutes ho ban tried for goal but missed on account of the very difficult angle the second touchdown was the re sult of mckissick's fumble on swarthmore's twenty-six-yard line lehigh recovering chenoweth shot a pass to 1 1 oban who carried the ball over the line and kicked goa,l swarthmore's first chance at of fensive playing came toward the end of the first period when lutz intercepted one of chenoweth's passes durbarrow's line plunge and a penalty gave the garnet their only first down of the first half the swarthmore backs were inva riably thrown for losses and for ward passing which has always been a strong point with them
