was the most consistent ground gainer of the wrecking crew but both lloban and crichton made some wonderful play and were al ways good on the defense 1 loban's tack-ling was a feati..v in ground gaining by straight scrimmage lafayette had a slight advantage but in forward passing lehigh was by far the superior the punting of both 1 loban and ecelly was of the first class but 1 lo ban had not a single kick blocked ( heiioweth was the star in running back punts a remarkable occurrence and a distinct feature of the game was the number of drop kicks seven were attempted lehigh two and lalavettc five and all were with out success the game in detail a college meeting was called at in ion yesterday and it was officially announced that monday afternoon had been granted by the faculty as a hoi id 1 v in order to give the stu dents a chance to prepare for the celebration held last night dr drinker gave a talk and urg ed the men to be careful not to de stroy any of the property of the townspeople who have been such good supporters of lehigh and her t'eani the various classes were then told where and at what time to meet and the outline plan for the evening announced in celebration of the wonderful victory of the brown and white eleven a monster bon-iire and p rade was held last night and it is safe to say that there was not a student missing from the demons tration during the whole after noon time was spent in collecting everything around the llethlehems which could possibly be made to burn a great deal of this materi al was obtained at the new taylor field and all was carried up to point lookout on south mountain where pwles had been erected in or der to give a foundation to the huge pile of wood that was soon to be built lip around it to the center pole was attached an arm which was to serve as a support for the 1 afayette dummy at 7.15 last night the entire stu dent-body assembled in drown hall continued on third pack lafayette wins cross country klin 36 to 2 3 . the annual cross-country run between lehigh and lafayette took place just before the game on sat urday lafayette came out victor by 36 to 23 name college time otto lafayette ?().() 1 mick el lehigh 32.06 llliss lafayette 33.14 walk lafayette jones i ehigh 35.33 burke 1 ehigh 35.35 strebig lafayette i leartman lafayette 41.25 ( h'lbert lafayette 45.57 keat lafayette 46.36 r.urns lehigh 4<;.2<x f6hl lafayette 50.26 yards without advancing the ball appreciably after three unsuccess ful attempts to advance the ball sheeren dropped back to try for a field-goal the kick was blocked but lafayette recovered three more vain attempts to advance the ball and sheeren tried another drop kick with the same result lafay ette recovering again two more attempts resulted likewise danne hower doing the kicking the first was blocked but recovered by la fayette the second went to one side it was in this way that lafayette lost her only chance to score lehigh's score came in the third period when the running back of punts by chenoweth gave a chance to kick from midfield i loban punt ed to the left of sheeren who fum bled goyne recovering for lehigh on lafayette's twelve-yard line at this point a pass to keady made ten yards and first down line plung ing failed three times and then chenoweth passed the ball over the line to keady for a touchdown this series of plays was practically the same as that which resulted in a touchdown for lehigh last year lloban kicked the goal after kick ing out to keady in the fourth period with the ball on lehigh's forty-yard line dodd replaced dannehower and tried to drop the ball over the bar this failed and from this time the game lost some of its former snap the most spectacular play of this period was when crichton caught one of sheeren's passes and return ed it twenty-five yards before being downed in the last few minutes of the game lafayette got away with two forward passes but the ball was on lehigh's forty-yard line when the whistle blew the most brilliant playing of the game must be attested to cheno weth his speed surpassed that of any other player on either team his dodging and running in the broken field and around the ends was of the kind that will always make the little quarterback a big factor in football at lehigh keady before twelve thousand specta tors lehigh defeated lafayette on taylor field saturday 7to 0 it was the forty-eighth gridiron meet ing of the rival institutions and re sulted in one of the closest scores and undoubtedly the hardest-fought game which has been played although outweighed slightly the brown and white team went into the game with the determination to win and backed by the wonderful lehigh spirit of the alumni and stu dents invariably ploughed through the lafayette team for big gains the winning touchdown was scored in the third period when af ter a series of punts lehigh re gained possession of the ball on la fayette's twelve-yard line a for ward pass from chenoweth to ke ady netted ten yards and placed the ball on the two-yard line i i ere the maroon and white line braced and held for three downs but on the fourth a nicely-executed pass over the line to keady resulted in the only score of the game lehigh took lafayette unawares when on the first play after kick off chenoweth made a perfect pass to fred green for a gain of thirty five yards for a few minutes it looked as though the lastonians would be rushed off their feet in fact in a remarkably short time the ball had been advanced to lafay ette's five-yard line and had it not been for a fifteen-yard penalty le high would probably have scored at this time after two unsuccessful attempts to advance the ball cahall was rushed in to try for a field goal but his kick went to one side throughout this per iod - lehigh had an advantage keeping the ball in lafayette's territory most of the time lafayette kept strictly on the defensive during this entire period nearly always punting on the first down i he second period started with the ball in lafayette's possession on lehigh's twenty-yard line right here a most remarkable thing hap pened in the fact that lafayette had just sixteen downs to gain twenty captain mick won the toss and put his men with their backs to the east goal scheeren kicked off to chenoweth on lehigh's fifteen-yard line chenoweth returned the ball five yards before being downed 1 diamond making a pretty tackle chenoweth then threw consterna tion into the lafayette men with a successful forward pass to fred creen that put the ball on lafay ette's forty-yard line keady went through right tackle for two yards he duplicated this feat on the next formation brdwitl broke up a for ward pass chenoweth to fred green lloban punted behind la fayette's goal-line but j diamond succeeded in bringing the ball back to a point about six indies outside of his goal-line kelly immediate ly punted to chenoweth on the lit ter's forty-yard line and the little texan brought it back ten yards latayette was offside in the play and was penalized five yards chen oweth in a run around left end made three yards lloban did not gain on the next play being brought to earth by i ). diamond lehigh was offside in the play and was penalized fifteen yards lloban continued on second page boxing cartooning and stirring speeches hold the attention of crowd the lafayette smoker was held in the colosseum on friday night november 21st the extremely large crowd numbering over 1,000 was sufficient assurance to the team of the loyal support they were to receive the following day alaiiv town people took advantage of this opportunity to become instilled with the beat lafayette spirit and at tended the smoker equally enthu siastic for victory as were the stu upon for a few remark's and his encouraging words were receiv ed with much enthusiasm before he had finished lafayette had prac tically lost the game and the crowd was becoming thoroughly saturated with doc wylie's mental attitude which took the form of lasting con fidence in the team more rousing speeches were de livered during the evening by coach keady sam strauss and several alumni namely kirk lawson once captain of lacrosse long an old football man smith cap tain of the first lehigh football team riley once cheer leader and captain of track all of whom voiced the enthusiasm of loyal
