part of geology not as a dry theo retical subject but as a practical fascinating work was quite re markable distinct cr mate he said the climate of chile va ried in the different sections one part is a most arid region small districts existing which have never had any rainfall ; while other parts especially the southern are noted for their great rainfall it is not a hot country but rather cool explored iron mine the iron mine which he explored was situated at tofo in central chile it consists practically of the whole upper portion of a rounded mountain and is considered as one of the freaks of nature the de posit was first opened by chileans and was later taken over by french capitalists and finally bought by the bethlehem steel company it is a very rich ore averaging in analy sis about 7 per cent iron parts of the deposit contain ore of low phosphorus while other parts are somewhat higher in phosphorus but they arc separate so that bes semer and non-bessemer ores ex ist within the same deposit and are yet distinct one from the other this peculiarity greatly increases the value of the ore he also spoke concerning his trip across the andes mountains on the transandean railroad short talk on a few of the principle diffi culties met with in highway con struction dr hewes outlined the method of the modern highway engineer study of traffic the highway system is the fun damental idea in modem highway engineering the design of this system is usually limited to the county or town as a unit in the design of a highway system the speaker said the engineer should make a careful study of : the traffic and highway area served by each road in the system ; the lengths of the roads and the intersecting roads he should have a copy of the best obtainable contour map of the area in question and should lo cate most of the residents in the district and hold personal inter views with them and thus obtain statistics concerning the amount of produce hauled by each and the roads used from these statistics the number of ton-miles of produce hauled over each road in the dis trict may be calculated and the question of how much money the county should put into its roads decided a common practice is for the county to issue bonds for a cer tain amount without any idea of the expense of the roads a traffic census is usually taken of the roads in the system ; this census takes into account the number of vehicles and the kind of vehicles using each road the tonnage of the road be ing based on loaded teams touring cars and motor trucks this prin ciple of highway system should be included in highway engineering to gether with the 1 designing of high ways methods foe bon-d issue following this discussion of the highway system the speaker point ed out the different methods em
