dine 15 announced glee club practice ; president flick explained that the honor system was in effect and ready to be enforced after some discussion it was vo ted that the seniors were the only men in college who should be allow ed to wear mustaches college lecture money is being raised to build a station on south mountain the evening of october 30th witnessed the birth of a new wire less society and a new wireless era at lehigh last year the wireless club was under the supervision of the e e society and that society elected the officers of the wireless club which method proved to be very unsatisfactory this year it was decided to break away from the mother society and do some thing a new club was organ ized which is to be known as the lehigh university wireless socie ty the following officers were elected : f c brockman presi dent m o andrews secretary continued on third page the second meeting of the year was held last thursday evening it was by far the best attended and most enthusiastic wireless meet ev er held at lehigh andrews 16 presented plans for the erection by the society of a wireless station on the top of south mountain at a point about one hundred yards back from look-out point the idea met with such approval that 40 was immediately subscribed for its lehigh alumni club of maryland on sunday evening at 6.30 o clock the regular weekly meeting of the y m c a was held in drown memorial hall a large audience of students and townspeople was in attendance attracted by the pres ence of the charming misses karu zo of the philadelphia operatic so ciety after the opening exercises miss marie karuzo accompanied on the piano by miss laura karuzo ren dered most excellently musette's aria taken from la boheme her encore was la folletta's marchesie mr whiteside's talk secretary h c whiteside of the lehigh university y m c a was then introduced and he delivered an interesting talk on life on a cattle boat he wanted to go to europe as cheaply as possible so he engaged passage on a cattle boat by a de posit of 5.00 he traveled through englan d france 11 olland ger many and belgium and returned his expenses in all aggregating not more than 100 he went over on his first trip on the boat mar quette seventeen other men from preparatory schools and colleges were on the same trip with him 700 cattle was the ship's consign ment there were also about 120 passengers aboard when the party first embarked they decided on cer tain bunks but when they saw a stupified foreman lying on a bunk and toes which had been chewed by rats sticking from the end of continued on second page maryland club meeting work on the seven central south sections built of reinforced con crete of the new stadium on tay lor field is near ing completion the four sections which thanks to the efficient and timely aid given by the concrete force of the bethlehem steel company were finished in time for use in the lafayette-le high game on november 22nd were a very satisfactory demonstration to visiting alumni of lehigh of what the completed stadium would be and the alumni and friends of lehigh are taking up with enthusi asm the task of completing the work the lehigh club of north east ern pennsylvania led off at their dinner on november 13th 1913 with the pledge of a section the philadelphia-lehigh club is stirring in the matter of another section a movement has been started in the home club of beth lehem for another and the lehigh club of greater new york at their dinner on the 12th appointed a committee to take the matter up in the empire city without doubt the pittsburgh club always ener getic in the interest of the alma mater will take an actii^e hand of individual contributors mr warren a wilbur last spring an nounced his intention of applying the 5,000 he promised after our team won the lafayette game of 1912 to give to some feature of our athletic plant to the aid of the stadium and last week mr charles m schwab president of the beth lehem steel corporation and mr eugene g grace 91 president of the bethlehem steel company an nounced to mr charles l taylor their intention each to donate a sec tion surely a most generous and welcome gift practically ensuring the completion next spring of the south portion of the stadium mr schwab thus supplements with this generous gift his donation as a trustee to us some years ago of our tennis courts which have done so much for the health of our student-body and the development of our athletic spirit and mr grace a noted athlete in his student days a leading student and a distinguish ed and successful engineer and al urhnus gives continued evidence of 11 is love for and support of the al ma mater by this practical encour agemeni and backing of the effort to improve our athletic situation the lehigh-maryland club met in drown hall on sunday after noon at one-thirty it was decided to hold a box party at the mary land theatre baltimore on mon day afternoon december the twen ty-ninth arrangements will be made to have a special car for le high-maryland men who are going home for the christmas vacation this car will be attached to the two-thirty-five train on tuesday december the twenty-third any lehigh man from maryland who desires to attend the theatre party or to go home on the special car is requested to give his name to g i nachman 14 or c loos 14 photograph out major general leonard wood chief pf staff of the united states army will address the student-body of lehigh in packer menu rial church on friday morning when his subject will be military prepa redness general wood will discuss particularly the phase of prepared ness embodied in the movement for students military instruction camps in which president drinker and lehigh have taken so promi nent a part in the coming here of general wood lehigh men will be privileg ed to see and hear a commanding figure in military and national life general wood was born at win chester n h in 1860 he was graduated from the harvard medi cal school in 1884 and two years later was appointed an assistant sur geon in the united states army he was made commanding colonel of the first united states volun teer cavalry the rough riders and for services at las guasimas and san juan hill in 1899 he was made military governor of cuba until the transfer of the govern ment of cuba to the cuban repub lic in 1902 from 1903 to 1906 he was governor of moro province in the philippine islands from 1906 to 1908 he was commander of the philippines division and in 1908 1909 was in command of the de partment of the east from april 8 to july 15 1910 general wood was special ambassador to the ar gentine republic he was made chief of staff on july 16 1910 and will serve until next april notice ' there will be an important meet ing of the glee club on wednes day december 17th at 4.30 p m in the parish house of the church of the nativity fountain hill it is necessary that every man be pres ent lehigh opened its basketball sea son on friday evening december 12th 1913 with a victory over loy ola college of baltimore by the score of 66 to 19 owing to the lateness in the completion of the new gym the game was played in the colosseum the floor was in poor condition for a true exhibi tion of the game on account of its slipperyness but had the advantage of being large first half from the first blow of the whis tle the brown and white team took the lead and showed rare form for an opening game johnson got the jump on his man successively and easily tipped the ball to the sig nalled position by clever passing and team work the ball was ad vanced within shooiing distance from where it was caged vari ous modes of attack were tried and each was successful time and again lehigh's defense was so strong that the visitors could score only from foul goals and in this capt scheurich of loyola made good at the end of the first half lehigh had fifteen field goals and four foul goals to her credit against loyola's eight foul goals making the score 34 to 8 second half the second half opened with two substitutions for lehigh and new men were sent in every five min utes until the entire scrub team was playing the snappy attack and strong defense were still evident and not till the latter part of the half did loyola score its first field goal which was followed by three more in the remaining time of play fouling was less abundant and net ted loyola but three points le continued on third page inter-fraternity bowling league at a meeting of the inter-frater nity bowling league held on sun day the m e 97 and the new secretary thomson king e e 08 ezra b whitman water engi neer of baltimore gave a talk on the city's new water system the club was addressed also by r w walters registrar of the universi ty and h m riley 10 of balti more mr riley gave an account of the football victory over lafay ette and much enthusiasm was man ifested over the success of the sea son the club requested mr walters to present to the athletic committee its petition that an effort be made to include some southern game in next year's schedule the teams sug gested being georgetown or johns 1 lopkins plans were discussed for the or ganization of a college club to in clude alumni of universities and colleges who live in baltimore for better acquaintance and mutual in terest this movement which has been started by cornell alumni in baltimore was approved by the le high club the club instructed the secretary to invite i resident drinker to at tend the january meeting there will be a junior class
