the riesel motor lehigh team meets defeat yale basketball team wins from brown and white by score of 27 to 13 well-played game nordenholt 14 gives interest ing talk on the riesel motor both teams play good game despite handicap of le high quintet the yale basketball team defeat ed the university five at new ha ven on wednesday last by a score of 27 to 13 the game was very well played by both teams although the lehigh team did not seem to be able to get used to the floor during the first half and only scored one point against yale's seventeen in the second half the team seemed to rally and scored twelve points to \ ale's ten which may be consider ed as excellent work in the face of the scoring done in the first half the team deserves a great deal of credit when it is considered that regular monthly meeting of the mechanical society was held last tuesday night in williams hall at 8 o'clock r l spencer instructor in the mechanical engineering depart ment and g nordenholt 14 were the speakers nordenholt gave a very interesting talk on the riesel motor " he des cr ib e d a great many different types of this motor that he has seen in this country hut principally in germany on for eign ships lie described the main points of the riesel motors and told about their operation in different classes of work both here and a broad his talk also dealt with the development of the motor from its earliest stages r 1 spencer spoke next on heating and ventilating mr icer has gh cii quit a good de i of time and stud on this subject and was therefore able to give a very thorough and interesting talk besides mentioning all the salient facts of modern heating and venti lation lie read several sets of data and calculations which he has com piled in figuring on the heating and ventilation of various types of buildings fie explained the sub ject very thoroughly and also all of the important formulae that enter into the calculations for work of this type the meeting then adjourned to another room where refreshments were served and the meeting was entertained by selections from the senior mechanical quartet after the refreshments were serv ed the meeting adjourned fire of unknown origin but sup posed to have resulted from an ov erheated flue early thursday morn ing destroyed the delta phi frater nity house at 701 delaware ave nue the barking of a pet dog owned by a student of the house awakened the steward and proba bly saved all the occupants from ■death by fire the dog perished in the flames surles the steward when awakened smelled smoke and on hasty investigation discovered that the building was afire he woke his wife and twelve students of lehigh university who are the members of lehigh chapter of the fraternity and they escaped from the burning building scantly clad after failing to reach the fountain hill fire co by telephone charles frederic penniman 14 ran to the warren silk mill where an alarm of fire was sounded the fountain hill company res ponded but the zero weather ham pered the work of fighting the flames when the first hose con nection was made the hydrant burst and the freezing of the water caus ed much annoyance the fire com panies of south bethlehem and bethlehem were summoned saved valuables by prompt action the piano was saved and the students managed to save all their valuables the stu dents were given temporary quar ters by other fraternities and pri vate individuals in the neighbor hood previous fire the building was of stone and shingle construction and replaced a building which was destroyed by fire several years ago then owned by r w davenport the house was purchased by the chapter last year the loss is between 15,000 and 20,000 partly insured board picture alumni club dinner annual dinner a new type of business since it has been organized it covers many activities and is creeping into every business and becoming a pow erful factor in the development of business growth of advertising an idea of the progress of adver tising can be ascertained when the history of its development is stud ied in 1759 advertising consisted in the placing of announcements in the newspapers in a very brief form and at that time dr samuel johnson in reviewing contempora ry facts said that advertising had reached its zenith at that time to day it is not limited to newspapers but every available space that can he found is utilized for advertising advertising how ever did not be come a dominant force until after the civil war after the war the brains of the country were directed to manufacture and it reached a high development with the pro ductive capacity of modern indus try it became necessary to solve the sales problems prior to the war with the development of the newspaper and the magazine some few small industries such as patent medicine manufacturers etc ad vertised it was a field that was not thought of by reputable manu facturers time went on and the manufacturers became awake to the possibilities of advertising and a few tried it with success since thai time advertising has become practically universal among business men every available opportunity for advertising is seized by the wide awake business man and to-day it is not limited to newspapers and mag azines but space is sold even in street cars and billboards are used everywhere as advertising mediums advertising methods in the early years of advertising each publication solicited its own advertising but this soon gave way and advertisers placed their business in the hands of a reputable advertising company in princi pal of the western high school washington ; mr frank c daniel principal of the mckinley manual training school washington and mr william f gude president of the washington chamber of com merce mr a e phillips of the class of 90 now superintendent of the department of sewers of washing ton was toast-master mr w a draper of the class of 07 is the presideni of the club mr h c eddy 92 vice-president and mr elwood johnson 07 is secretary and treasurer the meeting and banquet proved to be a great suc cess the speeches were inspiring and the gentlemen from the govern ment commission and from the schools at washington were mosl appreciative and complimentary in their references to lehigh and par ticularly to the share that lehigh men are taking in the management of government and that of finan cing the stadium section which the club has pledged to the university mr lawall reported for the sta dium committee thai progress had been made and thai the treasurer l the club had in
