the brown and white of feb ruary 27 contained some account of the address given by mr warren a wilbur on " the federal reserve act before the members of the politics club brown & white men easily lo cate basket for 18 goals and 4 fouls lehigh closed its scheduled bas ketball season last saturday after noon when the brown and white team defeated swarthmore 40 to 27 the two teams had met earlier in the season on swarthmore's floor lehigh having lost 20 to 19 in an overtime contest the re turn game started off with a rush green receiving the ball after a fine exhibition of passing and cag ing it from the side line for the first ten minutes swarthmore was unable to locate the hoop in the few tries allowed them lehigh meanwhile having totaled thirteen points the game slowed up con siderably from here on due to the number of fouls cajled and to the ball being outside so frequently swarthmore started their scoring on a foul goal made by twining and came up fast the half ending in lehigh's favor 19 to 11 lehigh came back on the floor for the second half after a pep instilling talk by coach muthart and started the scoring with a rush white shot three baskets in succession before the garnet team could tally kirkpatrick green and price shot five ringers among them in this half and the latter added three points to the total on foul goals swarthmore did not lag far behind however and by sending in two fresh men who aided materially started a threatening rally sproul who had gone in at center for lucas scored two baskets which with one by mackissick and several foul goals by twining boosted swarthmore's score to within strik ing distance of lehigh's total the lehigh five braced here and by fine guarding and passing stopped the visitors spurt the game end ing with the score at 40 to 27 the contest was featured by the fine shooting of the lehigh for wards captain price and white both of whom were playing their last game of basketball for lehigh and the wonderful guarding and passing of the two backs green and berg for swarthmore lucas and mackissick played as well as any of the seven who took part during the game continued on second page due to faculty and student invitation the entire student body will have the privilege of hearing mr wilbur repeat this address as a college lecture in drown mem orial hall on friday morning march 13th at 11 o'clock the invitation to mr wilbur and his reply are appended february 25 1914 mr w a wilbur dear sir we have heard from some of those attending your address last night of its value and practical nature and write to ask whether you would be willing to repeat the address before the student body at one of our friday lectures we have consulted dr drinker as to this and he is cordially in sympathy we understand that the address last night was delivered before the limited number of students com posing one of our student clubs the politics club but from what the members of that club say of the interest of what you said it is evident that the student body at large should have the benefit of it we would suggest some friday at 11 at your convenience on some date not already assigned for an letter of this reply very sincerely and respectfully yours w a wilbur lehigh obtains no falls but state's victory was by narrow margin the perm-state wrestling team defeated lehigh's matmen at state college saturday evening by a score of 28 to 5 in spite of the fact that lehigh obtained no falls or decisions the meet was unusual ly close and in most bouts state's victory was by a hair-breadth's margin . the team which represented le high was composed largely of sub stitutes due to the infection which broke out in the squad last week and their plucky fight against more experienced men deserves commendation . in the 115 pound class kirkhuff of lehigh and long of state gave a very clever exhibition of wrest ling which went twelve minutes without decision in the 125-pound class an extra period was required to decide the bout the lehigh man losing by falling to the mat only fifteen sec onds before the twelve minutes ended in the 145 pound class woelfel of lehigh and hill of state strug gled on their feet for nine minutes and most of the extra three min utes but an unlucky slip in the last eight seconds gave the bout to the state man the 175-pound class bout was declared a draw after twelve min utes good of lehigh put up a fine struggle in the heavyweight class against lamb of state in spite of the eighteen pounds handicap in favor of the more experienced man summary 115-pound class kirkhuff le high and long state went for twelve minutes without decision 125-pound class martin lehigh lost to crockett state by decision after twelve minutes 135-pound class wills lehigh was thrown by kirk state with a half nelson in five minutes and two seconds 145-pound class woelfel le high lost to hill state by deci sion after twelve minutes 158-pound class levin lehigh was thrown by verger state with a chancery and body hold in four minutes and three seconds 175-pound class bailey lehigh and stecker state wrestled for twelve minutes without decision heavyweight class good le high was thrown by lamb state with a half nelson in four minutes and twelve seconds ' referee macmillan judges sheridan lehigh lew is state timers graham lehigh steck er state mr walters to ad dress chinese students lehigh's basket ball season which was closed last saturday afternoon with a victory over swarthmore was one of the most successful seasons for a number of years and probably the most suc cessful one when the difficulties encountered by the team during the season are taken into con sideration lehigh's success iv basket ball last year was phenom enal but this year's avork as a team and in breaking in new men completely surpasses that of last year although the individual work may not stand out so prominently in every case the season's schedule contained a number of hard games with teams of high standing in the collegiate basket ball world who gave lehigh the hardest kind of a struggle however the brown and white squad came out victorious in every case but two out of a season's schedule of 14 games lehigh won 12 the two games resulting in defeat were both played with teams of high merit and on floors away from home namely at yale and at swarthmore the former winning by a score of 27 to 13 and the latter by 20 to 19 concerning the games played at home most interest can be said to have centered on the games with lafayette perm state and swarthmore whose teams have always been lehigh's keenest rivals in all branches of athletics all these games were victories for the brown and white team no return game was played with perm state but in the games played at lafayette and swarthmore lehigh was victorious in the former and was defeated in the latter by the small margin of one point by winning the home game with swarthmore a tie was established between lehigh and swarthmore for the leadership of the eastern division of the pennsylvania col legiate basket ball league perhaps the game of which the team should be proud is the first one played with lafayette at easton when it is borne in mind that the team had just lost two of their best men namely capt crichton and johnson by the action of the faculty on the day preceding the game and that there went down to easton on the next day iive men who had never played together as a team and that they came off the floor victorious by the score of 26 to 23 too much praise can not be given them and coach muthart much credit should be given capt crichton for his steady and effective work during the first half of the season he has played a great game for three years having been a member of the team since his freshman year his loss together with that of johnson was keenly felt during the remainder of the season continued on third page the chinese lehigh club will hold a regular meeting in saucon ila 11 on friday evening mr walters the registrar will be the speaker the third regular meeting of the arts and science club was held at dr drinker's home on thursday evening february 26 there were thirty members present after a short business meeting the speaker of the evening bishop talbot was introduced the very fact that the bishop spoke is evidence enough that the evening was a very pleas ant and instructive one bishop talbot took for his sub ject my children of the plains his talk was composed of four ex periences while he was serving in the capacity of bishop of wyoming and idaho at that time bishop talbot was the pioneer of the church in the far northwest and was the first to establish the church among the ranchers and the miners of that region in the eighties the bishop ran a small boarding school in a little town in missouri known as st james military academy the student body consisted of eighty boarders from up and down the mississippi valley the work of the school was progressing wonder fully well when the council of bishops met at chicago at the close of this convention bishop talbot was notified of his election to the station of bishop of wyom ing and idaho the bishop however could not fancy giving up his school for he was much attached to the work and it was only with much effort that he was persuaded to do so in his new work he faced a big proposition he had an exceeding ly large territory to cover and no means of doing so except by horse back or stage cheyenne was his headquarters and just the winter previous to his election most of the stock in that section had been froz en consequently about three fourths of the city had gone bank rupt and things in cheyenne were not as they had been pictured to the new bishop nevertheless he faced his new work with a firm de termination and took as a starter a trip to a camp far up into north wyoming this trip proved to be a most successful one the bishop spent two days in this camp and the im pression which he created was a very deep one within two days he succeeded in arousing enough spirit and raised enough money to build a small brick church the devotion of the settlers was extra ordinary and the best compliment of all was the fact that they made the bishop an excellent offer to stay and do the talkin this of continued on fourth page friday march 13 at 11 a m has been selected
