twenty-four miners attend meeting wednesday evening mr bartlett speaks scores favor lehigh assistant professor in mining en gineering talks about alaskan fields comparative scores of two teams point to brown and white victory the march meeting of the min ing engineering society was held on wednesday evening march 11 in williams ll all twenty-four members were present the pro gramme consisted of a short busi ness meeting and a talk by mr bartlett assistant professor of mining engineering mr bartlett spent all of last summer in the mining fields of alaska and he took this as his subject it was highly entertaining as well as instructive the talk was illustrated with lan tern slides which he and mr brooks a representative of the united states geological survey took while on this work the substance of the lecture was continued on fourth page y m c a announcement with a team in good shape le high will meet pennsylvania on the mat saturday night in a contest that should turn out a ■victory for the brown and white lehigh's team came through the cornell meet without injuries ; and the same line up will be pitted against pennsyl vania comparative scores as far as they may be trusted point to a victory for lehigh pennsylvania's line-up will in clude dorizas the giant greek heavy-weight ile is not in the best of condition but may still he count ed on for a remarkable exhibition of prowess and strength the red and blue team will be chosen from the following list : 1 15-pound class — sherman , kopcke l^j-pomul ciass-^woo^fey mann 135-pound class — mitchell lind say 145-pound class — milligan taz ewell mcgrath 158-pound class — holmes ear hart 175-pound class — hogg jones heavyweight class — 1 orizas 707 students in college t j priestley 15 reads paper outlining the construction of piers and abutments the march meeting of the civil engineering society of the univer sity was held last wednesday even ing in the physics lecture room mr f t wagner of the philadel phia & reading railway was the principal speaker of the evening and t j priestley 15 read a very interesting paper on bridge foun dations mr priestley took a bridge on the fla npden railroad in new england as an example and told of the successive operations of putting in the piers and abutments borings were first made along the proposed line of piers determining the nature of the river-bed and the material beneath it this done the piers were erected by the use of caissons which were built on shore floated to the site and there sunk the work of digging went on inside the caisson the chamber being un der great air pressure this latter in creasing naturally with the depth dug until rock was reached on which the foundation was then built mr wagner's subject was the abolition of grade crossings and his talk was most interesting show ing a thorough and first-hand knowledge of the subject the scene was philadelphia and mr continued on third page miners have chosen theses complete list of sixteen theses which senior miners will work up the following is a complete list of the thesis subjects of the pres ent seniors taking the course in mining engineering : 1 f bianco — determination of latitude and azimuth by the en gineer's transit 2 f e driscoll — the location and estimate of cost of a r r line 3 d m dunbar — working on thesis no 2 4 c w francis — tests of a four-spigot classifier 5 h r griffen — prospecting in colombia south america 6 j k goundie — working on thesis no 2 7 c e lawall jr — an inves tigation of the garnotite deposit near mauch chunk 8 h f lenker — the preserva tion of mine timbers 9 g b linderman jr — the ( pening of an anthracite mine in schuylkill county 10 a c mac hardy — working on thesis no 2 11 r l mickd classification and table tests on a virginia lead zinc ore 12 r peale — coal mining in the rocky mountains 13 r j protzeller — working on thesis no 7 14 a n rosenbaum — working on thesis no 1 . 15 e b snyder — working on thesis no 11 16 c ho graduate — deter mination of a method of treatment for a complex sulphide gold ore from the apex mine washington senior banquet lehigh faculty entertained the speaker of this sunday ev ening's y m c a meeting will be professor 1 c mccune profes sor mccmie is at the head of one of the large colleges in korea dur ing the recent struggle between ja pan and korea professor mccune was thrown into prison a fact which nearly brought about serious international complications pro fessor mccune is now here on a furlough and will speak of his ex periences on sunday evening spe cial music will he rendered this will be a meeting well worth at tending chemistry meet statistics contained in the 1914 register of lehigh university which will be published in april show a total registration at lehigh university of 707 students this exceeds last year's enroll ment by 35 and is 68 greater than in 1912 with the exception of 1908 when the tuition was consid erably lower this is the high record registration in the university's his tory the figures given do not of course include the more than 200 students who arc studying in le high's extension courses the geographical summary shows that pennsylvania leads with 375 students new jersey is second with 72 maryland third with 61 ;
