subscribe for a section in the new taylor stadium held its march gathering saturday evening march 21st in the hazelton club hazel ton pa about thirty lehigh men were present and charles dorrance 07 chairman of committee on ar rangements did himself honor after the hazelton members of the club had shown what they were capable of an invitation was ex tended to hold more meetings at the hazelton club it is likely that the regular meetings will be held in turn at scranton wrlkes-barre and hazelton announcement was made of progress in getting subscriptions to the stadium section and it is but a question of a short time until the full amount will be taken up w c anderson 94 president of the club was toast master of the evening remarks were made by the following men all of whom were enthusiastic about the future of their alma mater and their al umni club vice-president emery a b jessup 95 h a butler 83 ; e 11 1 awall 82 ; g e shep herd 94 charles dorrance 07 and w r bray to electrical meet this evening lacrosse practice mr c r underbill will be the principal speaker at the e e meet this evening in the physics build ing ilc will speak on the interest ing subject of electromagnets and will supplement bis talk by a number of experiments |. s williamson 14 will read a paper on mercury vapor tur bines the annual championship meet of the intercollegiate wrestling as sociation will be held at the uni versity of pennsylvania on friday and saturday of this week the preliminary and semi-final bouts will be held on friday evening at 8 o'clock in weightman hall the finals for all places will be held at 2 o'clock at the same place on sat urday afternoon the teams will weigh in at noon and 8 a m on friday and saturday respectively one pound over-weight being allow ed on the first day and four pounds on the second day lehigh's chances for individual championships look brightest in the 11 5 1.35 and 158-pound classes granted first place in these weights the brown and white's chances of taking the meet would be very good however this may be present con ditions indicate that lehigh will stand high on the list when the score is settled the favorites in the 125 and 175 pound and heavyweight classes are respectively boak of cornell pen dleton of columbia and dorizas of pennsylvania the 145-pound class appears very undecided lehigh's line-up will probably be as follows : 115-1 ound class kirkhuff 125-pound class — martin 1 35-pound class — thomas 145-pound class woelf el 158 pound class — sawtelle 175-pound class — bailey heavyweight class — good junior banquet the first of the annual banquets was held by the seniors last thurs day night march 19th at 8 o'clock in the eagle hotel ! lie eagle banquet hall which has been the scene of many lehigh banquets was very prettily arranged and when the seniors entered the waiters were all at their positions in readiness to serve the first course upon entering each man was pre sented with a german silver match case and a box of fatimas as sou venirs of the banquet the match case was quite a unique idea as at other class banquets they usually give some sort of leather goods in the form of wallets card-cases etc it was inscribed with senior ban quet 1914 on one side and a raised lehigh seal on the other the food was very good and ex tremely well served menu oyster cocktail cream of his lie celery olives gherkins boiled pel aware shad drawn butter pommes au saratoga chips roast young turkey stuffed giblet gravey grilled szveet potatoes whipped potatoes lima beans creamed onions waldorf salad roquefort cheese saltincs vanilla ice cream assorted cakes cafe noir music was furnished throughout the banquet by torpey's orchestra after the last course had been serv ed and the orchestra had stopped several of the seniors went over and rendered several selections they played very well mr todd being particularly clever on the snare drum class of 14 and ( hherwise g lewis hours hard work from now on will be the program for the forty candi dates the first game which is with the navy will be played on a/larch 28 and it is hoped that the team will be in good shape by that time al though the weather has prohibited regular practice on the field college meeting next friday there will be a college meeting in packer hall next friday morn ing at 1 1 o'clock a senior class meeting will be held immediately after the close of the college meet ing wireless society candidates for asst managership needed the manager of the baseball team desires to announce that more can didates are needed for the position of assistant manager sophomores are urged to report immediately prof arthur s cooley address ed the student-body in chapel last friday morning taking for his sub ject the old rome in the new prof cooley was acting professor of greek at lehigh last year and is well known to the students his talk took the form of a tour through the modern city the many build ings old and new being described interestingly and their history and associations related supplement ing the talk many line pictures were shown of the places described rome was first built on palatine hill one easy of defense and cen trally located among the famous seven the hill is about a mile in circumference and really consists of two hills with but a slight depres sion between them in the old days each hill had a wall running around it as the city grew and expanded id more hills the walls were thrown up about the whole until at its height rome had one large wall surrounding it ruins of this still remain and is one of the feature spots at the entrance to the city the finest ruins of the many in the city and surrounding country is perhaps that of the palace of ti berius the roman forum became at one time after the decline of the empire a dumping ground for the city and the present level of the streets about there is fifteen to twenty feet higher than the ancient one this is true in many parts of the city in one spot in particular there was found while digging for the foundations of the modern pal ace of justice the ruins twenty feet below the surface of the palace of augustus and digging further be low this was found the remains of the settlement of romulus the forum is now being restored by ar chitects and builders of italy there is still a part of the famous rostrum left this rostrum was made from the prows of ships cap tured from koine's enemies and on each of its four sides was a relief showing the view of the city to be obtained from that particular
