team defeats clubmen who an nually turn out one of coun try's best teams team played five games during easter vacation against southern nines mining society hears interesting speech on now widely discussed subject chemistry society addressed by mr fischer of the metal lurgy department value of carnotite won first game of trip numerous errors and excellent batting of more seasoned rivals lose other games higgins 02 the speaker safety methods as applied to the mines of this country a meeting of the mining society was held in williams flail wed nesday evening l hoffman 15 acting chairman of th society opened the meeting at eight o'clock the first speaker of the evening mr edwin higgins e m 02 gave a talk on the safety first move ment this movement has been or ganized in connection with the uni ted states bureau of mines since 1910 the government gives only 500,000 annually for the support of this work though four times this amount is spent yearly for the de partment of agriculture fifty-five per cent of the railroad traffic of the united states is operated by the mines under the present organi zation the central office of the safe continued on f,xond page taylor gymnasium lehigh's baseball team did not fare very well on the easter vaca tion trip in the south winning but one game out of five played the team had had little outdoor prac tice in south bethlehem to prepare it for a series of games against op ponents who had been out earlier in the year and had already played nu merous games the showing made was not however all that might have been expected of the team errors were numerous — thirty-one being made on the trip an average of six a game — and the hitting on the whole was weak — the team's average being 224 the first game played was won and against the best team probably in that section : cath olic university the team then met with poor train service and suffered from lack of sleep and constant changing the game with the university of virginia sched uled for wednesday afternoon had to be called off because of wet grounds after the players had ar rived at the field the results of the trip and ex periences of the men would seem to indicate that it was a failure as far as conditioning goes as well as in the matter of games won and lost and future southern trips might well be arranged so that the continued on third page sawtelle 16 speaks on the oil production in the united states continued on second page wednesday evening the chemical society held its april meeting at the home of dr drinker after the officers for next year had been nom inated mr siegfried fischer of the department of metallurgy spoke on the value of carnotite since the discovery of radium in 1898 much interest has been taken in all metals which displayed any radio-activity pitchblende is the best-known of such metals or ores and also has the largest amount of radium present carnotite ranks close to pitchblende in this respect all these ores which have recently gained prominence through their radio-active properties were dis covered by madame curie a french woman carnotite is made up principally of calcium potassium and uranium salts with some radium and vanadi um present the ore presents a light color more yellow with larger amounts of uranium though be coming green and sometimes black in color the ore is found in sand stone and clay in long fissures vary ing in length from two to four feet the more important deposits are in colorado utah and peru though recently deposits have been discov ered in mauch chunk in this state mr fischer spoke in detail con y m c a announcement a monthly meeting of the civil engineering society was held in saucon hall on wednesday even ing the order of business began with the nomination of new offi cers the following were nomina ted for president teeple and hoffman ;
