base ball team loses to steel co brown and white twirlers lose close game by the score of 8 to 7 thirtieth annual production of the mustard and cheese club pleases enthusiastic audience last year's champions defeated by brown and white lacrosse players by the score of 6 to 4 batteries work well in hand after first few minutes of play lehigh's players keep game well attack features game the opening dual track meet will be held on taylor field to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock with buck nell the up-state collegians may be depended upon to show their best in order to attempt to retaliate for the defeat they suffered at the hands of the brown and white track team last year two men will represent the two institutions in each event burke who has done much for the team in the past will be unable to run having suffered an injury recently while practicing on the track the men who will rep resent lehigh in the various events will be chosen from the following 100 yds.-bickley kuhn neyer 220 yds bickley hanway kuhn 440 yds carlson hanway — carlson burns 1-mile — becker capt mickel 2-mile — burns polster von m engeringhausen hurdles—davidson good keyes mckay raine warren i ign-jump — keyes nostrand pole vault — good randall broad jump — fred green han way vanniman weights — bailey grumbach mc carthy civil service examinations lafayette admitted to member ship at second annual meet ing of the league the second annual meeting of the pennsylvania intercollegiate bas ketball league was held in phila delphia last saturday this league was started last year but at such a late date that the managers of the teams which joined had their 13 - 14 schedule practically completed and as a result there was a hitch to the post-season play-off for the championship of the late ness of the season to expedite the playing of championship games between the sections the represen tatives at the meeting saturday passed a rule that the teams in the eastern and western sections shall have played all league matches by february 22 and in the central sec tion by february 27 eastern section lehigh swarth more and lafayette lafayette was elected to member ship to replace franklin and mar shall who withdrew for a year ap plications for membership were nu merous but the teams already in the league were reluctant to allow others in and lafayette was the on ly successful applicant the mem bers of the league are now : central section — albright buck nell susquehanna and gettysburg western section w and }„ pittsburgh and perm state y m c a meeting lack of timely hits and the slug ging on steel co.'s part res ponsible for score the junior week baseball game was played with the bethlehem steel co team on friday afternoon april 24th on taylor field the game was closely played throughout but resulted in a defeat for lehigh with the score 8 to 7 . the game opened with lehigh batting twombly being the first man ile started well by making first base on an infield hit o'keefe followed with a one-bagger and fwombly came home loud was put out on a fly but lees hit and brought o'keefe in fishburn was next man up and was put out while lees stole second the side was retired with lees losing out at home plate kleppinger batted first for the steel co and received his base on balls following him mcnamara was put out but schwick hit and brought kleppinger home b roth drove a liner into the hands of fishburn who grappled it and made a double play unassisted flic second inning opened with bell receiving base on ball chen oweth sacrificed bell going to sec ond but light was put out at first base twombly hit and brought bell home and gained home himself on a two-bagger by o'keefe loud knocked a fly to center field and the side retired in the latter half of this inning the first man up for steel co was put out on a fly to right field bui the next batter made first base light struck out the next man up but a home run by schwick brought in three runs making the score 4 to all at 1.30 o'clock ( n saturday last lehigh elimi nated johns hopkins last year's champions of the southern divi sion of the intercollegiate league as a champion contender this year by the score of 6 to 4 the brown and white lacrosse players won because they excelled johns 1 opkins in the fine points of the game at the start and once for a brief period later in the game only did johns hopkins have the upper hand in the contest l,t was at the start in the first ten minutes of play that the visitors gained their first two goals which resulted from a vigorous attack on their part immediately the game drifted into johns hopkins terri tory and lehigh's attack worked like demons first dunn shot a goal from a quick pass from san chez who soon r.fter carried the hall half the length of the field and scored the second goal and tied the score it was not long till white scored another for lehigh which caused johns hopkins attack to get to work and at the start of the sec ond period they evened up the score again mayer who took scrugg's place soon put lehigh in the lead once more the defense men tight ening up prevented johns hopkins from even getting another chance to score the visitors 3 glee club rehearsal doctor drinker has received a communication from g s webs ter chief engineer and surveyor of the bureau of surveys depart ment of public works philadel phia the substance of it is as follows : a civil service examination will be held at city hall philadelphia on april 30th for the position of second assistant in the survey corps of this bureau salary 1,000 per annum the a large and enthusiastic audience witnessed the performance and from the time the curtain rose at eight-thirty until it fell shortly af ter eleven there was not a moment that their full attention was not concentrated upon the stage by the well-coached players the play was presented admirably and its success was especially marked by the manner in which the members of the cast played their parts well interpreting at all times the keen wit in which the play was abundant the gracefulness of the choruses coupled with the catchy music and original dances gave the finishing touch to the production
