vol xxi walter s bourlier gives interest ing talk on south american railway construction work lehigh 18 bucknell 0 brown and white twirlers smoth er up-state collegians in one-sided game 1917 class totals 58 points se niors 54 points sophomores 32 points juniors 9 points by defeating main-liners brown and white players win cham pionship of southern division score 5 to 2 many errors in game lehigh ties with penn state 12 inning contest a pitchers battle anderson pitches great game darkness ends game early error gives state advant age albrecht and keady re sponsible for lehigh's runs loose fielding on bucknelps part and lehigh's hard hitting win game the april meeting of the elec trical engineering society was held on thursday evening april 30th at 8.00 o'clock walter s bourlier was the speak er of the evening lie is at present connected with the bethlehem steel works and is interested in the con struction of an electrical railway in chile south america for the pur pose of bringing down iron ore from the mountains to the shipping ports along the sea coast the iron ore derived from the two mines under consideration is exceptionally rich in the pure prod uct and would he of large value to a company such as the steel works if its transportation could be ac complished cheaply the mines are from 2000 to 2500 feet above sea level and it is the purpose to have them yield about 10,000 tons of ore per day the trouble with the heat ing of the cars due to braking is very important the project is to use the d c system at 2400 volts on the line with a maximum grade of 3 ( r . with this arrangement the trains must be stopped hall wax down the slope in order to cool off the wheels and shoes of the cars the use of the induction motor is eliminated because it is a practically constant speed motor and it takes two speeds to regenerate the single-phase system cannot be used because single-phase is not regen erative the annual inter-class track meet was held saturday afternoon on taylor field and was won by the freshman class with 58 points as against 54 totaled by the seniors the class of 1914 put up a game fight in their efforts to win the meet for the fourth time but lost through lack of entries in all the events the junior class totaled 9 points and the sophomores who had been counted on to win the meet scored but 32 points three of the 1916 varsity stars however were not able to run — burke in the mile and half-mile carlson in the quarter-mile and warren in the hurdles many others were missing due to the lacrosse team being away and the mustard and cheese show in xew r york kuhn turned his ankle in the 220-yard dash and may lie kept out of the lafayette meet wednesday the feature event of the afternoon was the two-mile run which was won by burns 14 after one of the longest and fastest sprints for that distance seen on taylor field von mengering hausen was second polster third and ballinger walked away with one point for the juniors bailey tried to save the day for the se niors by attempting the pole vault but could not get the right hold on the pole the individual high scorer of the meet was good 17 acquiring 20 points for his class bailey 14 and mickel 14 each secured 13 continued on second page u of p baseball team here to-morrow mustard & cheese show a success in new york in one of the most interesting games seen on taylor field lehigh and perm state played to a twelve inning tie last friday afternoon darkness ended the game which had resolved itself into a pitchers battle the score standing three all continued on second page perm state earned its runs in the first and second innings but was presented with the one in the third inning on fishburn's error le high's runs resulted directly from home runs one being made with a man on base it was in the second inning after lees had drawn a pass that albrecht made a pretty drive to left field for the circuit bringing lees in and t icing the score in the third inning state scored again on an error and keady again evened up the score for lehigh by dropping the ball over the right field fence for another home run from this time on the game was a pitchers battle between llesselbacker for slate who had taken leibert's place on the mound and anderson for lehigh anderson pitched a great game striking out thirteen of the up-state collegians and allowing comparatively few hits and walking only one man the fielding in the latter part of the game on lehigh's part was spectacular in several in stances lees chenoweth and fish burn featuring for state craw y m c a meeting dunn mayer buck and jay do good work on the attack for lehigh another championship was won by the brown and white last sat urday when the lehigh lacrosse team won from swarthmore by the score of 5 to 2 this victory gives lehigh the championship of the southern division of the inter collegiate lacrosse league the game itself was a strenuous one several of the players on both sides receiving injuries at the be ginning of the game both teams played cautiously and it was a diffi cult matter to predict which twelve would come off the field victorious it was near the end of the first half that jay shot the first goal of the game for lehigh this seemed to instil new life into the game and swarthmore soon had a goal to her credit soon after this dunn scored another goal for lehigh and the orsi half ended with the score standing 2 to 1 in lehigh's favor in the second half lehigh proved her superiority by making three goals to swarthmore's one with two substitute players in the game these three goals were made by jay buck and mayer and resulted from the brown and white players taking the garnet twelve off their feet by the vigorous work of the at tack men and close playing of the defense it is now 7 thought that lehigh has an excellent chance for the ameri can championship as she has de feated teams which have been vic torious over some of the leaders in wednesday since lehigh's team has shown such marked improve ment since their southern trip a close game is to be expected lecture on friday following the college meeting on friday morning at 11 o'clock in the chapel a half hour lecture will be given by charles d hurrey of new york city executive secre tary of the student department of the international committee of the young men's christian association mr hurrey is a graduate of the university of michigan and has done extensive work in all sections of this country and in south amer ica y m c a the second production of make me laugh given last saturday ev en ing at the hotel plaza in new york was a decided success in ev ery way the spacious ballroom of the hotel in which the show was given was filled to its capacity and the excellent work of the cast and various choruses held the close at tention of the large and enthusiastic audience throughout the entire play to add to the success of the af fair a telegram received from mr walters stating that lehigh had defeated swarthmore in lacrosse 1 1 i,i i afternoon was read between the acts a very pleasant dance followed the production to those who made the trip a possibility and so ably managed it much credit is due the new york alumni club as well as the mus tard and cheese dramatic club have signified their intentions of making the new york trip an an nual event university dance a university dance will be held in drown memorial hall satur day evening may 9th smith's or chestra will furnish the music as before tickets will be 50 cents each lehigh completely smothered bucknell with an 18 to 0 score on saturday in the very first inning it was an easy matter to determine the winners bucknell's loose field ing coupled with terrific batting hy the brown and white nine was the cause for the one-sided score bucknell's second slabman pitched a fine game but he was unable to overcome the poor support he re ceived the entire lehigh team starred both in the field and at held the attention of his audience in his last position schuttler came into contact with some of the great engineers of the day pie was offered a position as assistant to the chief engineer but realized that he would be incapable of filling it with out a college education why did i come to college said mr schuttler in conclusion simply because i realized i had reached the top of my ladder and if i wished to climb higher i had to have a college education 1914-16 lacrosse game the senior-sophomore lacrosse game will be played on taylor field to morrow at 2.30 o'clock there will be an
