mandolin club scrubs lose to varsity second string men are unable to score in wednesday practice continued on fourth page the last foot-ball practice of the season which the students will be able to see as a body at cheering practice was held on wednesday afternoon at 3.30 o'clock before the scrimmage was be gun a long signal practice was held both varsity and scrubs participa ting the regular work in scrim mage was begun promptly at 4.00 o'clock before a fair attendance at cheering practice the kick-off being received by the varsity although the varsity was disabled by the ab sence of a number of members they were still able to plow through the scrub line for big gains which net ted them three touchdowns in the fifty minutes of play the chief ground-gainers for the varsity were o'keefe keady and crichton the first of whom went around the ends several times for large gains made through his ability to dodge the first touchdown was made by hoban who received a pretty forward pass which came in to his arms in the 10-yard zone be yond the goal a number of other forward passes worked during the scrimmage netted the varsity con siderable ground but the scrubs seemed unable to pull any passes through successfully for they either struck the ground untouched or the first meeting of the mining and geological society was held in williams hall on wednesday ev ening addresses were given by'w k smith 13 and by j l dynan 09 the subject of mr smith's dis course was the helen iron mine this mine is located in canada twelve miles inland from the north ern shore of lake superior and as was demonstrated by the speak er presents many interesting facts the ore is chiefly hematite and lim onite having been deposited out of sidente and fynite the various methods of mining the ore and the difficulties encountered thereby were presented in an interesting and in structive manner mr dynan spoke about the min ing conditions in nevada at the present time confining his talk to the tonafah mine where he has been located for the last few years speaking of the most important mines in nevada he named tona fah and goldfield which are situa ted in the western part of the state the former was discovered in 1902 and is considered the richest silver mine in the united states the town itself differs widely from most western mining camps in that the inhabitants are not continually com continued on fourth page entrance condi tion examinations new y m c a secretary there will be a meeting of the mandolin club in drown hall at ten o'clock sunday morning at the last rehearsal there were pres ent about twenty men all of whom are good material the instru ments most needed are the cello guitar and flute it is thought that this year's club will be the best ever minstrel show at the rehearsal on wednesday afternoon of those trying out for the minstrel show there were pres ent about thirty-five men the time was entirely spent in practicing the songs on sunday at 10 a m there will be held a semi-final try out at which time the number will be cut to twenty y m c a announcement the official bulletin-boards of the university in the various buildings contain notices of the re-examina tions in entrance subjects in which a number of freshmen are condi tioned the examinations will be held on these dates : — wednesday november 6th 1.00 p m — elementary algebra eng lish united states history saturday november 9th 1.00 p m — plane and solid geometry english history wednesday november 13th 1.00 p m — advanced algebra ancient history saturday november 16th 1.00 p m — french and german wednesday november 20th 1.00 p m elective subjects . the new general secretary of the y m c a w a wayside was in town wednesday looking over his future field of action mr wayside conies to lehigh from the central branch of the philadelphia y m c a he is highly recom mended and is well-qualified to lead the students in y m c a work he is a graduate of the university of pennsylvania where he was very active in literary and athletic affairs mr wayside expects to get right oui among the fellows and be one of them not having been out of college too long for that he was down at cheering practice while here taking his first lesson in le high cheering as he aptly express ed it he will take charge of the work on november ist attended alumni meetings track practice the concluded by tendering his resignation because of pressure of work he expressed his opinion that the club would make greater progress by having a president who could devote more of his time to its affairs mr cam eron was made temporary chairman during the balloting for a new pres ident messrs griffen shaw fry and rehfuss,.all members of the se nior class were nominated mr fry was elected
