many old trees are treated by modern methods continued on fourth page minstrel show starts rehearsals mandolin club an important rehearsal of the mandolin club w t ill be held in drown hall 10 o'clock sunday morning it is necessary for all candidates to be present and to be there promptly as music will be given out for the trials which will be held within the following week more men playing guitars and cel los are needed the mandolin club will do practically all its work in conjunction with the glee club and will enjoy the same trips and con certs rehearsals have started for mins trel show which will be produced during the second week of decem ber j e gheen the able coach of last year's mustard and cheese cast has been secured to coach this year's minstrel show and his well-known ability warrants a well-staged pro duction besides promising some thing new in the black-face part it is mr gheen's intention to pro duce a burlesque on the mikado the latter was written by frank dumont and the original cast con tained lew dockstader the world famous black-face comedian rehearsals will be held wednes day evenings at 7.30 o^clock and saturday afternoons at 1.00 o'clock in drown hall the first few re hearsals will be try-outs for both the minstrel show proper and for the cast of the burlesque class book committee continued on fourth page the bad condition of so many of the fine old trees to which the cam pus owes a large part of its natural beauty has led the university to take active steps for their preserva tion the allen nursery and for estry co of rochester n v un der the supervision of dr robert w hall of the department of bi ology and forestry has been ex emplifying modern tree surgery on many of the largest trees in uni versity park their work has re vealed the disastrous effect of water introduced into a tree by improper methods of pruning in cases where the interior of the tree has been thus rotted the injured portions have been cut and scraped off and the remaining wood treated with insecticides or fungicides as the case required and the hellow por tion filled with cement in this way any further decay of the tree the senior class recently elected the following men to this year's class book committee : — lamb horcasitas gorman rowland stokes lenker and herr large number of men report keady out on account of injury ( continued on fourth page a strenuous practice was held wednesday afternoon despite the fact that the field was wet and slip pery a squad of thirty men re ported all of the varsity being present with the exception of kea dy who was injured in practice on tuesday afternoon and who will probably be out of the game for a few weeks the men were first practiced in using the forward pass afterward two teams were run through a sig nal practice which lasted for almost a half hour finally a scrimmage was held the varsity taking the ball on the scrubs thirty-yard line the scrubs played a plucky game and though they were not able to advance the ball any considerable distance they held the varsity well ( n account of the wet ball fumbles were frequent , the second team scored the first touchdown on a for lehigh university discus sions worth while and the feed excellent president finn 13 opened the meeting and after the reading of the minutes and the constitution the resignation of rooney 13 as bursar was accepted mart 13 and spencer 13 were nominated for the vacant position the for mei being elected mr butterfield and mr larkin were made honor ary members of the society mr butterfield being chosen as the fac ulty advisor the natural gas investigation was the subject of the paper read by mart as stated by the reader there is a decided difference be tween natural and artificial gas es pecially so in their composition natural gas contains no carbon monoxide or hydrogen being unlike artificial gas in this respect it is this carbon monoxide that makes the artificial gas so poisonous and dangerous when inhaled another difference is that more air is need ed to procure a complete combus tion with natural gas than with the artificial gas it is very necessary that complete combustion takes place because if not a very poison ous and explosive gas is formed another interesting thing about natural gas is that the composition of the gas from a certain well re mains almost constant for a con siderable period on this account and owing to its cheapness it has mart 13 and spencer 13 the speakers of the evening m e society holds meet scrubs score on varsity tree surgery on the campus the first meeting for the term of the civil engineering society was held in saucon hall on wednesday night the attendance was good ex ceeding that of any previous meet ing held last year coupled with this representation of the members three excellent papers were read which were well above the average in quality and showed marks of careful preparation and fore thought the absence of professor stewart somewhat shortened the original programme but on the whole the meeting proved a success and was enjoyed by all present it being the first meeting of the season 1912-13 the reports of the several officers were heard first at the close of which president camp bell announced the subject of the first paper the approach to the coke-ovens at the bethlehem steel works to be read by w h ster ner 14 mr sterner gave a full descrip tion of the railroad used for the transportation of coal to the ovens as a second part he took up discussion of the various bridges and cut-outs along the line with the dimensions and cost of each to one of the bridges especially he call ed attention viz : the concrete bridge over the hellertown line which carries a line with a 12 de gree curve and has one wall higher than the other but is perfectly sym metrical throughout the second paper on the im provement of the ohio river with dams and locks was read by dayton 14 he described the work no 10
