just above what is now the vil lage of durham bucks county where the delaware river flows through a gap rivaling in pictur esque beauty either the delaware or lehigh water gaps to the north of it a band of men dressed in buckskins and armed with flint locks in 1725 crouched in the woods suddenly there was a puff of smoke from one of the guns this was the signal for several of the men hidden in nearby growths to meet an oncoming band of indians and when both parties came to gether there were the most cordial greetings the white men were not there to fight the red men from the interior of the province but were to treat with them as agents of william perm to get lands ac cording to the walking purchase method with perm's consent on one side and that of teedyuscung chief of the delawares who was then the ruler of the lands on the other the whites located there the colony soon became a neat hamlet of con tented and prosperous people durham grew to be a conspic uous place about 1727 for there was operated the first iron works in the country and when the revo lutionary war broke out less than half a century after it provided shot shell pots pans and skillets for the continental army aside from being the home of the first iron industry it is credited with being the place where the boats w rere built that carried washington and his army across the delaware that memorable morning in decem ber 1776 now philadelphia historians and members of patriotic societies are making the old town their mecca for the last of the original iron continued on supplement y m c a announcement on my return to the field to-day after several days absence which was unavoidable i was greatly and deeply depressed at the deplorable condition in which i found the foot ball squad while i expected and did find some of the varsity men with slight injuries from the indian game it never occurred to me that it would be necessary to line up varsity men against each other in order to conduct a scrimmage be cause of the utter lack of a scrub team at the beginning of the season i was very well pleased with the large number of men who joined the squad making it possible to have as many as four teams working at the same time but since then there has been a gradual falling off until a very serious siutation has now been reached — not enough men for two teams the team has given a good account of itself thus far but it has now reached a stage where it is playing wholly upon its nerve something which cannot endure un til the end of the season unless it receives the hearty support of the student-body in the form of a good scrub team and it must have that continued on fourth page to-morrow's games the foot-ball games to be played among the prominent colleges to morrow are as follows : amherst vs worcester polytech nic at amherst army vs carlisle at west point bucknell vs navy at annapolis colgate vs rochester at hamil ton cornell vs dartmouth at ithaca franklin and marshall vs muh easton tufts vs springfield tech at medford wesleyan vs williams at will iams y 7 ale vs brown at new haven there will be a meeting of the y m c a on sunday evening at the usual time 6,30 o'clock in drown hall no speaker has been decided upon yet but it is sure that there will be some prominent man to give an address on a live subject notices will be posted on the camp us giving the above information mr whiteside of the university of pennsylvania has been chosen general secretary for the coming year he has outlined an interest ing program and it is hoped that all the students will avail them selves of the opportunity of hear ing the various speakers who will be here during the rest of the year early in july last dr drinker re ceived a cordial invitation to attend the formal opening at houston texas of the rice institute on the 10th 11th and 12th days of octo ber the invitation was accompa nied by beautifully illustrated and elaborate statements of the pro posed scope and plans of this new university founded by william m rice of houston texas who it will be remembered was murdered in new york some years ago for which crime one patrick was con victed and is now imprisoned at sing-sing mr rice is said to have made the larger portion of his money by investments in texas lands which greatly appreciated in value by his will he proposed to found a public school at houston but the endowment having increas ed under the careful handling of his trustees to 10,000,000 the project has broadened into a uni versity texas has an excellent and pro gressive state university at austin but the rice institute will give a needed and valuable help to the ed ucational interests of the state it is being developed conservatively so far one educational building has been erected and a dormitory a complete project has been worked out by the university architects for the future buildings proposed and these are to be built from year to year out of surplus income the principal to be kept intact the ins titution to be developed along con servative lines as to finances and very progressive ones as to the edu cational needs of the state invitations were sent out to all the institutions of higher education in this country and there was a very general representation in ad dition twelve eminent scientists were invited from abroad to deliv er inaugural lectures during the ex ercises each of these gentlemen prepared three lectures for the pro ceedings of the opening festival these lectures to be published in a series of volumes to be issued in commemoration
