by far the largest and most im portant smoker of the year was held on friday night in the gym nasium just before the lafayette game and the number of college men present together with the en thusiasm displayed through the whole evening made it also the most successful one this year a large programme had been pre pared beforehand which furnished entertainment to the large crowd until 10.30 p m when the smoker broke up and the parade through the bethlehems began following a number of songs and cheers for lehigh and the team the annual freshman-sopho more game of basket-ball was an nounced in which the sophomores won out by the score of 30 to 15 the first half proved to be close ly contested the freshmen playing sensationally all through the half ended with both teams on about even terms the score standing 6 to 5 in favor of the sophomores in the second half the sophs com pletely ran away with the fresh men and scored 24 points to their opponents 10 the final score was 30 to 15 the schields 1 continued on eighth page showed a remarkable speed and it was seldom that any receiver of a punt carried the ball any apprecia ble distance the game was full of line plunging and it was particu larly noticeable that neither side tried many long end runs the longest one of these was made by hoban when headed by a perfect line of interference he skirted dia mond's end for twenty-five yards in the third period this in itself shows that line plunging was the principal method of advancing the ball resorted to both lines were constantly hammered and this coupled with sharp tackling and keen interference made the game one in which the crowd was forced to show a keen interest from be ginning to end at the start pazzetti did not at tempt many open field runs and j diamond did not appear able to return any punts for any marked distance consequently line plunging and short end runs were abundant pazzetti's punts during the first half of the game did not quite measure up to the standard set by him during the previous games of the fall and owing to an injury to his ankle sustained during the game the punting of the second half showed no improvement and it largely was for this reason that lafayette was able to keep well up in lehigh's territory during the first half once during the first period a punt was siezed after it had gone barely twenty-five yards by the ma roon and white but lehigh held like a wall and received the ball through failure by lafayette to gain the required number of yards in four downs nothing could be executed a gainst the brown team after la fayette had gone as far as le high's two-yard line and three plunges netted nothing once la fayette attempted to score in the second period by a field goal the continued on third page for the first time since the 1 1 to 5 lehigh victory in 1908 the brown and white eleven gave lafayette a defeat last saturday afternoon on march field easton before a rec ord crowd by the of 10 to 0 despite the fact that the lehigh team was outweighed by far they entered into the game from the start with the determination to fight to the end and which was backed up by the perfect cheering of the en tire college seated in the east stands during the first half neither side scored resorting mostly to straight foot-ball and going up and down the field time and again lafay ette's hard plunging was in evi dence in this half and it gained most of the ground for the eas tonians brown and sheeren being the runners twice during this half lafayette was so near scoring that it looked threatening for the brown and white eleven but the latter rallied as many times to an impassible barricade and the ball after being forfeited to lehigh was sent out of danger by pazzetti's reliable toe lehigh's tactics during the last half of the game were open play strategy being resorted to in the shape of forward passes which netted considerable ground and one of which was responsible for the larger part of the points which de feated lafayette it was this style of play mostly which steadily gain ed ground for lehigh and brought the team to the point where paz zetti's well executed field goal gave the first signal of victory it was the kind of a game that offered many opportunities to both sides to score and it was the way in which both teams took advantage of these chances that decided the victor in seeing and grasping these opportunities pazzetti was noticeably keener than his opponent diamond and was also more alert in getting the plays started in running down punts both sides the brown and over 12000 people see the game college meeting in packer hall much spirit at lafayette smoker rousing speeches by alumni and students raise enthusiasm coach keady given great ova tion by the student body a spirited college meeting was held in packer hall at 11 a m friday in the absence of dr drinker vice-president emery made a short but enthusiastic ad dress to the students and read a letter from dr drinker in which the latter expressed regret at not being able to be present coach keady succeeded vice president emery and received a great ovation his speech was short and to the point he stated that the team was in good shape despite the reports that had ap peared in different papers he de clared that he had confidence in the lehigh varsity and that all it needed was the unswerving support of the students captain pazzetti in a short talk requested that the members of the team be undisturbed by any cele bration which might have followed the monster smoker which was held in the gymnasium in the ev ening manager bryant explained the complication of the ticket situa tion and said that four hundred new seats had been obtained president rooney of the senior class read a telegram relative
