frank b gilbreth consulting en gineer of new york city will ad dress the civil engineering society this evening at 8.30 o'clock in sau con hall the subject of mr gil breth's address will be actual methods used for installing scien tific management mr gilbreth has had a vast amount of experi ence in general contracting work and is an expert on questions re lating to scientific management despite the disagreeable weather which prevailed last friday even ing a large number of students and people of the bethlehems attended the lecture on conservation giv en by gifford pinchot in the uni versity chapel on that evening prof stewart in introducing the speaker spoke of the attempt that is now being made to do in the bethlehems what many places of the same size and smaller have well under way that is provide public playgrounds for the boys and girls who demand play and who unless given the proper places will play in the streets prof stewart said that the ques tion of public playgrounds for the bethlehems is a serious one es pecially on the financial side the work that has been done in con nection with the university athletic field and the school yards is a clear evidence of what can be done if the right methods are applied mr pinchot then delivered an excellent lecture saying in part the conservation movement de pends for its success largely on the understanding that the women have of it and the support which they give to it patriotism is the key note of the success of any nation it must begin with the children and almost without exception it is the mother who plants patriotism in the mind of the child it is her duty therefore it is the mothers of the nation who direct its destiny the fundamental task of patriot ism is to see to it that the nation exists in honor security and well being fortunately there is no doubt about our existing in honor and security but the great problem which is occupying the minds of our people now is this shall we continue to exist in well-being ? " if we are to have prosperity in this country it will be because we have an abundance of natural re sources available for our people in other words just as you guide the minds of the children towards former publisher and now a real estate man in new york city ; william h cooke 85 a physician in orange n j ; morris l cooke 95 director of public works of the city of philadelphia ; and ed ward m cooke 87 formerly of denver col now in new york city the brown and white lehigh university lecture by gifford pinchot tau beta pi holds smoker wrestlers to meet columbia vol xx dinner given col goethals no 29 mat artists will engage in their first meet to-night in the gym many noted men speak at func tion of honorary fraternity lehigh-new york club tenders dinner dr drinker a speaker conservation the subject of excellent talk in the chapel a light work-out was given the wrestling team on wednesday af ternoon in preparation for the meet with columbia to-night there were no strenuous bouts all atten tion being paid to the holds the team is in good condition and although no information can be secured as to columbia's strength the prospects of winning the meet appear to be good except in one class there were no try-outs all candidates accept ed the results of the recent sweater contest and the only try-out which was held was in the 135-lb class where gatch 14 of last year's varsity was contested by thomas 16 who won the sweater in that class the try-out was to go to the best man in three bouts gatch threw thomas in the first bout in five minutes and fifteen seconds with a crotch and chancery hold the second bout also went to gatch at the end of the nine minutes on decision the team which will represent lehigh to-night follows : 115-lb class — suppes 16 125-lb class herr 13 135-lb class gatch 14 145-lb class mart 13 158-lb class sawtelle 16 175-lb class — watson 13 heavy-weight class—dayton 14 y m c a announcement dr c k edmonds a graduate of johns hopkins university of baltimore will present a very in teresting talk at the y m c a meeting on sunday evening dr edmonds is president of the canton christian college in can ton china and is at present tour ing on a leave of absence he has spoken at a number of universities and colleges having addressed the college lecture this morning his talk is sure to prove highly interesting as he has chosen for his subject — the new republic of china — a subject that is of world wide importance at the present day although so little is known about it mustard and cheese all try-outs for the mustard and cheese will be held in saucon hall on the following dates : cast — saturday february bth at 2.00 p m cast and chorus — tuesday feb ruary 11th at 7.30 p m cast and chorus — wednesday february 12th at 3.00 p m candidates will watch the bulle tin-board in packer hall for fur ther announcements the honorary engineering f rater nity of tau beta pi recently held its first smoker in the united engi neering societies building at 33 west 39th street new york city the meeting was opened at 8.15 and a program of talks by the fol lowing men was rendered : dr a c humphreys president of stev ens institute dr c e luke pro fessor of mechanical engineering at columbia university mr e j mehren managing editor of the engineering record and mr t m moore new york commission er panama-pacific international exposition these talks were ex ceptionally well rendered bringing out many points of general inter est and knowledge at the conclusion of this part of the program refreshments and cig ars were served during which time many old friends gathered together and discussed their past years in college and the general topics of the day it was not until after mid-night that the meeting was ad journed mr h g harvey vice-president of the association and a graduate in electrical engineering at lehigh made the statement that the smoker had been such a success that a more elaborate function will be planned in the near future it is very prob able that the next affair will be a tau beta pi dance civil meet the dinner of the lehigh uni versity club of greater new york tendered to col george w goe thals chief engineer of the pana ma canal on monday evening jan uary 27 was probably the greatest social function in which lehigh men have participated for many years when col goethals accepted the invitation of the club inquiry was made of the secretaries of the a merican institute of mining engi neers the american society of civ il engineers the institute of elec trical engineers and the society of mechanical engineers as to wheth er in their judgment the members of those societies in and about new york would like to have an oppor tunity of attending this dinner held in honor of one of the greatest en gineers of the day there was a very cordial response and accord ingly arrangements were made to have notices of the dinner sent out by the secretaries of the four so cieties to their members resident in and near new york this was done and there was a large attend ance from those societies outside of our own alumni who w rere pres ent in great numbers not only from the new york club but from our lehigh clubs in neighboring cities the president of the club mr schuyler b knox presided as chairman and too much praise cannot be given to him and to the secretary of the club mr george r enscoe for the admirable way in which the whole matter was han dled mr knox made an ideal chairman,—tactful ready and yet self-effacing dr drinker was called on as the first speaker to welcome the club's guests and in closing he read a letter from president taft regret continued on second page lehigh's new track coach lehigh has been fortunate this year in securing the servipes of thomas e burke of boston as the track coach for the coming sea son mr burke is a graduate of harvard where he secured the in tercollegiate quarter mile record after graduation from harvard he took up amateur running and rep resented america two times in the olympic races where he broke the world's record for the 440-yard run since this time he has been coach of many excellent track teams a mong which are mercersburg and harvard mr burke intends to spend a few weeks with moakley the cornell track coach before re porting here on april the ninth
