that which defeated columbia last friday evening namely : — 115-lb class — suppes 125-lb class — captain herr 135-lb class — gatch 145-lb class — mart 158-lb class — sawtelle 175-lb class watson heavy weight class — dayton gatch and mart who came out of the columbia meet slightly in jured are now in good shape sev eral new candidates came out this last week for the heavier classes the lack of candidates in these classes has been coach sheridan's chief worry yale has asked lehigh for a meet to take place in new haven about march bth it is very like ly that this match will be held as all but the matter of the guarantee has now been arranged to fill a gap in the schedule made by the cancelling of the princeton meet negotiations are on with laf ayette for a wrestling match laf ayette's athletic committee sent a representative down to the colum bia meet friday night to see man ager fahl concerning the matter this meet if arranged will be held march ist in easton lafayette is trying to organize a wrestling team and lehigh is more than willing to help her do so it being thought that a match between the two riv als held in easton will boom wrestling there and place it on the same high basis it is at lehigh and be the means of starting annual meets between the two colleges specimens received panama canal map the february meeting of the mechanical engineering society will be held at the home of dr drinker on tuesday evening feb ruary 18th at 7.45 o'clock mr dyer smith m e 03 will speak on patent experting new field for engineers j h sheppard 13 will present a paper on modern tendencies in marine propulsion y m c a professor stewart has had placed on the bulletin board of the uni versity library a map of the pana ma canal that is attracting consid erable attention among the students it gives an aero view with the land in relief and the entire canal zone is clearly shown wireless club lacrosse practice about thirty men responded on wednesday to manager coleman's call for lacrosse candidates a short practice was held on the up per field and many of the men showed up well for the first prac tice of the year there are quite a few men out who did not come out for lacrosse last year on ac count of having too much work and it can be seen that some of these men have quite a little la crosse ability so that the prospects for this year's team are somewhat brighter than they were a few weeks ago when it was made known that some of last year's men intended to leave college quite a few of the candidates are of the freshman class and it is thought that some good material can be picked from this class as some of the men have had quite a little ex perience in playing the game as was shown by the stick work used on the field in practice of last year's team lehigh still retains the following men : — ■cap tain jay speed hartdegen ray nor buck and perkins dunn 12 captain of the 1911 lacrosse team has returned to college and his presence will greatly strengthen the line-up mr j h nightingale will give an illustrated lecture on the pana ma canal and social conditions in panama at the y m c a meet ing in drown memorial hall sun day night mr nightingale was heard here several weeks ago when he delivered a lecture on japan at the y m c a meeting the february meeting of the wireless club will be held at 7.45 p m tuesday february 18th in the e e lecture room the department of geology has received in exchange for minerals sent out from the east last spring several shipments of specimens in cluding several fine specimens of lithophysae or stone-bubbles in lava from the thomas mts utah and some typical copper zinc and tungsten ores from colorado from the colorado school of mines a number of california minerals from the leland stanford junior university various specimens for class work and an especially fine mass of the rare mineral dumortier ite from r m wilke a dealer of palo alto california many of these are on exhibition in the mu seum in williams hall the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa friday february 14 1913 the chaperon to be played vol xx death of john fritz new features in 1914 epitome wrestling team to meet navy no 31 title of musical comedy to be given by mustard and cheese hard match expected with mid shipmen team in good shape aged engineer and trustee of university dies at home principal change will be combi nation with senior class book the mustard and cheese dra matic association has started work in earnest and from now on the members will be kept busy rehears ing their parts a temporary cast of twelve men has already been se lected the chaperon is the title of the play decided on for this year it is a musical comedy in two acts and is the same piece as that in which eva tanguay made her first hit the libretto was written by frederick ranken original mus ic composed by students will be used entirely seven male and five female parts compose the cast the chorus will be quite large there are many comical situations and lines in the play the show will be on a larger and more pretentious plan than any college show ever be fore attempted at lehigh alto gether it will be a good profession al play for this season as for last two coaches have been engaged each one being a past master in his own line for the dialogue end of the show the services of j e gheen of bethlehem have been engaged mr gheen as will be remembered held the same position last year the success of the khan of ka continued on fourth page john fritz died in his home in bethlehem at 1.45 a m yesterday aged 90 years 5 months and 21 days in the life and now in the pass ing away of this engineer and iron master of international fame le high men of this and earlier gener ations have an intimate interest and pride mr fritz was a member of the first board of trustees of this university appointed by asa pack er himself and up to the time of his late illness was active as a trus tee on the present board in his gift of the john fritz engineering and testing laboratory the erec tion of which he personally over saw mr fritz gave crowning evi dence of his feeling for lehigh the autobiography of john fritz published last year begins i was born august 21 1822 in londonderry township chester county pennsylvania and was the oldest child of a family of seven children from this volume the following facts about mr fritz's life have been taken : as a boy he had from his eighth to his six teenth year only the schooling that a farming section in the 30\s af forded in 1838 he became an ap prentice at parkesburg learning the trades of blacksmith and coun try machine work following the business depression of the early 40's mr fritz went to norris town where he obtained employ ment in an iron mill he was soon made mill foreman with others mr fritz started a small machine shop in 1852 two years later he was made general superintendent of the cambria iron works at johnstown it was in 1860 that continued on second page m e meet tiie 1914 epitome will be in many ways a notable departure from the publications of former years the greatest change lies in the combination with the senior class book this year no separate class book will be published and the material that usually appeared in that book will be given a place at the head of the list of classes about ninety pages will be devoted to the senior class here will be printed individual photographs of each member of the class with a short sketch of each man and a list of his college honors at the end of this a number of pictures will appear the class ballot and other material which has hereto fore been published in the class book the next most notable change is that the book is of a different size from previous years having a somewhat larger page the size which has been adopted is the stan dard one in which almost all col lege publications appear the change was made with the idea of setting a new standard one in which a page of printed matter would make up more easily in recognition of the successful foot-ball season of last fall the foot-ball section is being featured individual pictures of the various players will be printed together with a short sketch of the man an effort has been made to secure a greater number of pictures of foot ball games ; and quite a nmber of pictures have been obtained a new arrangement of the book has been adopted throughout and it is the hope of the board that the book will prove an agreeable sur prise to the student-body in view of the fact that a larger book is being issued and to defray the in creased cost of publication the price has been raised from a dollar and a half to two dollars an effort is also being made to place the future epitome boards
