lehigh men will remember the story of how some years ago mr fritz said one day to president drinker — i wish to tell you that in my will i have left the sum of 50,000 to lehigh university to be expend ed for such purpose as you may advise and i've made up my mind to revoke that bequest and to have the fun of spending the money my self on the university in company with you and charley taylor and this he did and as we all know the engineering laboratory which he devised and which was built and equipped under his own personal supervision cost him very much more than the amount of his original bequest mr fritz took great pleasure in the work and the completed laboratory bears evi dence of his master-mind in its de sign and appointments no one ap preciated better than he did how ever that the gift of a new build ing to an educational institution however much it may be needed and however complete it may be is an added burden on the cost of general maintenance unless it is en dowed with a sufficient sum and by his will mr fritz — who from the founding of the university in 1866 to the day of his death was a constant adviser and friend and a trustee whose counsels were in valuably great — has bequeathed to the university his residuary estate estimated to amount to about one hundred and fifty thousand dollars after the payment of generous leg acies to relatives to st luke's hos pital to the bethlehem public li brary and to other purposes as an endowment fund primarily for the maintenance and upkeep of the fritz engineering laboratory the clause in his will covering this be quest is as follows twenty-first : all the rest resi due and remainder of my property whether real personal or mixed whatsoever and wheresoever situ ated i give bequeath and devise to lehigh university at south bethle hem in the county of northamp ton pennsylvania as an addition continued on supplement following the lecture by col h p bope vice-president of the carnegie steel company in drown memorial hall to-day a college meeting attended by the faculty by representatives of the trustees by the entire student-body and by prominent alumni was held and in order that this could be done without interference with the din ner hour exercises scheduled for one o'clock were deferred for the day to one-thirty president drinker opened the meeting by reading the extract from the will of john fritz which is referred to in another article in this issue and by calling particular attention to the provision in mr fritz's will by which he gave his entire residuary estate intended for the university to mr tay lor in case he should die within thirty days of the making of the will of course we know what mr taylor would have done with the estate but it is highly appro priate that all lehigh men should have an opportunity to consider this superlative mark of confidence in mr taylor shown by this action of mr fritz mr taylor entered the board of trustees in the autumn of the year of dr drinker's election to the presidency they have been life long friends from the day that mr taylor graduated from college when he entered dr drinker's office for a few months of work before going into the employ of the johns town steel company and when dr drinker was called to the presiden cy of lehigh by the alumni mr taylor was one of the first to ral ly to his support and at the invi tation of the board of trustees entered the board to aid in the act ive alumni support of dr drinker's administration mr taylor has always shown in tense active interest in student life at lehigh in promoting measures for the comfort health and pleas ure of the student-body it was he who secured for us from mr car negie our student dormitory which against mr taylor's protect mr carnegie insisted on calling taylor hall and mr taylor was one of those prominently active in the continued on second page m e society notice death of lehigh man it is just one week since the first call for the lacrosse candidates was made and the tri-weekly practices are assuming now a more serious aspect captain jay has taken the men in hand until the arrival of the coach and the time is spent in shooting at marks and in lively scrimmages between the veterans of course the team has suffered a severe loss of many of the last year's men through graduation but their absence is bringing to light many men with quite a little ability who have previously been overshad owed the sophomores and fresh men are well represented and al though in many cases somewhat in experienced as to scrimmage work are well under way on account of their fair stick work the nucleus about which this year's team will be built is captain jay speed hartdegen buck dunn and perkins : - ''■'■■word has been received of the sudden death of walter j ammer m e 07 of pneumonia mr am mer was recently appointed instruc tor in the engineering department of pratt institute brooklyn n y he had not been feeling well but reported for work in the morning and that night died the doctor pro nouncing it pneumonia the february meeting of the mechanical engineering society which was postponed from last tuesday will be held next tues day evening at the home of dr drinker dyer smith 03 and j h sheppard 13 will be the speakers the burr wishes to announce a competition for the position of assistant art editor the compe tition is open to members of the sophomore class only competi tors should hand their names at once to one of the editors and re ceive instructions as to the kind of material most acceptable the com petition will close on april ist the brown and white lehigh university john fritz makes bequest basketball team beats swarthmore vol xx bethlehem pa friday february 21 1913 no 33 new gymnasium for lehigh junior ora torical contest annual event will be held in chapel to-morrow morning princely gift made to university by charles l taylor object of same to thoroughly equip fritz laboratory garnet team puts up fine game but is downed 36 to 26 the annual oratorical contest open to members of the junior class of the university will be held in packer memorial church to-morrow saturday february 22 at 10.30 a m the speakers as announced by professor thayer chairman of the faculty commit tee in charge will be the following 1914 students : daniel stauffer aungst of landisville subject the declining birth rate ; " geo forster of philadelphia subject when arbitration fails ; " rus sell meade neff of allentown sub ject china's greatest mineral re sources george fred norden holt of tompkinsville n v sub ject the premium system of wage payment george fair wolfe of youngwood subject the revival of the olympic games these six contestants have been chosen from a number of competitors who submitted writ ten orations on a list of suggested subjects prizes of 25 15 and 10 given by the alumni associa tion will be awarded to the three speakers on saturday judged to ex cel in literary merit and in delivery the judges will be lieutenant william king principal of the bal timore polytechnic institute dr emory n wilson , principal of the central high school washington d c ; and schuyler b knox 93 eastern contracting manager of the fort pitt bridge works and president of the lehigh university club of greater new york dr rossiter w raymond lecture continued on fourth page in a game played on the local floor which was a hard struggle from beginning to end more so than the score would tell lehigh came out a victor this is the third successive victory over teams which are ranked among the best in the country though swarth more did not have geig their star center and mckissick both of whom are injured they had a scrap py aggressive team in the first few minutes of play lehigh seemed to be at a loss the score was very close and at one instance was tie 7to 7 then field goals by crichton and a k white and exceptionally fine goal-shooting of muthart gave lehigh a moderate lead for a time the little quak ers were not to be outdone and by a final effort they closed up within three points of the brown and white score the first half ending with the score-board showing 16 to 13 a field-goal was made by swarthmore after the timekeeper's whistle blew but the referee con tended it should count the second half was very fast and snappy lehigh worked better and as a result of lightning passes and clever shooting they secured a lead which was maintained for the rest of the game during this pe riod crichton caged four baskets two of them being shot with a man clinging to him muthart also prov ed his worth by getting three diffi cult field-goals one of them being a most sensational one-hand shot the garnet team were unable to get goals from the floor due to close guarding and when the final whistle lacrosse practice a large audience of students as sembled on short notice in the large room on the third floor of packer hall last tuesday morning to hear dr rossiter w raymond lecture on the subject of japanese engi neering dr raymond accompanied the american institute of mining en gineers on their trip some time ago to japan and at the time was sec retary of the society dr raymond holds lehigh's de gree of l l d
