lehigh's aggregation easily the best in the east to state in briefest terms a sum mary of lehigh's basket-ball season would be to say that it is without a doubt the most successful one that she has closed for a number of years and probably the most suc cessful one at the close of last year's season lehigh's success in basket-ball had attained a climax but this year's work as a team has totally eclipsed that although the individual work may not stand out so prominently in every case the season's schedule contained a number of very hard games games with teams whose reputa tion is wide-spread and who gave lehigh the liveliest kind of a strug gle but the latter five proved their worth and came out the victor in every case but two out of a total number of games of 14 lehigh won 12 the two games resulting in defeat were both played on floors away from home namely at annapolis and at penn sylvania state college the former winning by a score of 53 to 17 and the latter by 29 to 15 as the middies do not leave their home floor it was impossible for lehigh to obtain a return game with them here however the state col legians returned the game played on their floor and lehigh turned the continued on second page college lecture an illustrated lecture on atlan tic waterways will be given in the chapel on friday morning march 14th at 11 o'clock by wilfred h schoff secretary of the ameri can deeper waterways associa tion attendance of the students is re quired lecture postponed no college lecture was held on friday morning as scheduled due to sudden illness c l harrington who was to speak on aerial navi gation was compelled to postpone his talk to an indefinite date tom grimes whose services last spring were largely instrumen tal in raising lehigh's position in the intercollegiate lacrosse league will again teach the gentle game at lehigh this spring coach grimes arrived in town at noon yesterday and took immediate charge of the squad in the afternoon although much of the veteran material that was developed here last year is not available this sea son coach grimes will still have a good nucleus around which to build up a strong team with captain jay former captain dunn speed raynor hartdegen buck and per kins back in the game and with the husky bunch of new material some of which has had some experience there is every possibility of lehigh having a championship team this year less than a month remains be fore the first game which will be with cornell on lehigh field and the coach will endeavor to whip the men into the best of shape by that time most of the men are in fair ly good physical condition from the scrimmages which have been held for the last month and are ready to take on the hard work that the continued on fourth page lacrosse practice the prospects for a good lacrosse team this year are very promising if any idea of the matter may be gotten from the large number of men who have been reporting regu larly of the forty men who have been practicing there are a number of new ones besides seven members of last year's team owing to the unfavorable weath er not many of the squad appeared for practice on saturday with the approaching favorable conditions however the material at hand should be greatly developed during the next few weeks with the addition of the mary land agricultural college game this year's schedule is similar to that of former years ; including games with cornell and the carlisle indians the lehigh wrestling team de feated the university of pennsyl vania team on their own floor fri day night by a score of 12 to 5 the meet was more closely con tested than the score would indi cate pennsylvania at all times put up an aggressive opposition but her men were surpassed by the lehigh grapplers in ability and in training considerable dissatisfaction was felt on the part of both teams over the incompetency of the referee in the 158-pound class which was held first an altercation occurred over the referee's decision owing to a misunderstanding as to whether in ternational or intercollegiate rules should be followed the dispute was settled by allowing an extra pe riod of six minutes in which tuck er of pennsylvania gained a deci sion over sawtelle of lehigh summary 1 58-pound class — tucker penn sylvania won decision over saw telle lehigh in 9 minutes 115-pound class — suppes of le high was given decision over meg argee pennsylvania in 9 minutes 125-pound class — herr lehigh threw dickson pennsylvania in 1 minute with an arm roll 135-pound class — williams of pennsylvania threw gatch lehigh in 2 minutes and 35 seconds with a chancery arm lock 145-pound class — flick lehigh won decision over crawford penn sylvania in 9 minutes 175-pound class — watson le continued on fourth page tau beta pi pledges following the chapel exercises yesterday morning the following men were pledged to tau beta pi the honorary engineering society : — w f bailey 14 w c owen 14 l s green 14 c e loos 14 w f perkins 13 j s long 13 e r mclaughlin 13 w b todd 14 r e mickel 14 the varsity relay team annexed another victory by defeating the maryland agricultural college quar tette at the richmond college in door games at richmond va on saturday night due to a misun derstanding local authorities had lehigh booked to run washington & lee university but on arriving in richmond it was discovered that washington & lee was paired off with georgetown while lehigh was scheduled to run the richmond light infantry blues a local mili tary organization lehigh declined the race on the ground that only collegiate opponents could be com peted against and the richmond management finally matched lehigh against maryland agricultural col lege which is in the same class as lehigh at the university of penn sylvania relay carnival the farmers started off well by taking the lead and held it for two laps but after that lehigh assumed the lead and each lap increased the gap between the two teams burke running last for lehigh finished an easy winner lehigh s time was the second fastest time on the floor george town whose team recently defeated pennsylvania was first in this res pect burke 16 ran in the open half and quarter-mile events he won the half with ease finishing over thirty yards ahead of his nearest competitor in the 440 he experi enced a little hard luck after trail ing the leaders for three-fourths of the race he took the lead in continued on fourth page e e meet the march meeting of the elec trical engineering society will be held on friday evening march 14 at 7.45 o'clock in the physics lec ture room arthur h allen of philadel phia will address the society on compression rheostats and will give a short additional talk on in terpolar motors w n gambrill 13 will read a paper on electric signalling lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday march 11 1913 the brown and white basketball has brilliant season lehigh matmen defeat penn lehigh wins from m a c vol xx coach grimes has arrived maryland aggies defeated in fast relay race will assume immediate charge of lacrosse squad local wrestlers win five bouts from red and blue no 38 that senior banquet to=night = eagle hotel don't ss it
