waterways in the chapel last fri day morning mr schoff illustra ted his talk with lantern views of the proposed waterways showing maps and picturesque views of old time canals and of improvements under way the project of the deeper wa terways association is to develop along the atlantic seaboard a chain of stations so that freight may be transported cheaply by water the atlantic seaboard is peculiarly a dapted to waterways this ques tion of cheap transportation by wa ter has a decided bearing on the cost of living mr schoff said there have been a number of sur veys to determine the path of the coastal chain connecting boston harbor and other points three diff erent routes have been surveyed the cape cod work has interest ing features ; the canal will be op ened within two years this work is a private undertaking and as a consequence there will be tolls the proposed new york-boston canals will require a large amount of money and it will be some time before the government will under take it the speaker said at new york the intercostal work will con nect with the new york state ca nals the state is spending about 120 million dollars on this latter work and when finished it will be entirely free from tolls it means connection with the great lakes from whence come iron and other ores the canals in the east wherever there are any are primitive not even the most ancient vessels can pass through any of the streams the smallest vessel in the fleet of chiistopher columbus mr schoff said could not navigate in these waterways canals as operated in this country are not economical one freight car can carry 50 tons across new jersey in five hours while it takes five days for a canal boat of equal capacity the work on the new york barge canal the speaker declared pre sents more intricate engineering problems than the panama canal the river is spanned by massive bridges which control the height of the water the highest lift lock in the world is on this construction mr schoff explained by means of pictures how the new and larger canal is built over the old one this the march meeting of the elec trical engineering society was held in the lecture room of the physics laboratory on friday evening march 14th at 8.00 o'clock all present were fortunate in hearing two excellent speakers on subjects which were not only novel and en tertaining but also practical pittsburgh was present and in behalf of allen bradley & co whom he represents gave a talk on the allen & bradley compression rheostats and in ad dition spoke of the merits of the three-wire system and interpo lar motors a paper on electric signalling by w n gambrill 13 contained a description of the methods used on railroads at present for signal ling trains automatically with the aid of an electric current the method of direct current on the rails for the signalling apparatus was formerly used in which the main principle consisted in the short-circuiting of this current when a train was across the tracks and in this avay releasing a signal which fell by gravity the use of current on the rails for other pur poses however led to the adoption of the alternating current system which is used to-day on all railways the speaker also gave an account of a newly-patented contrivance for warning the engineer in the cab of the presence of another train on the same block mr allen the second speaker of the evening with the aid of slides showing the mechanism of the car bon compression rheostat and va rious types of the same described fully the introduction of this type into general use and the possible total substitution for other rheo stats the essential features of the carbon rheostat are a number of small graphite disks formed into a column of varying length the pressure of these small disks to gether forms better contact between the surfaces of the disks and more continued on fourth page basket-ball elections the basket-bali team held elec tions for captain and asst mana gers afternoon during the easter holidays the fact that lehigh's schedule starts shortly af terward has necessitated this step continued on fourth page the perm state wrestlers defeat ed the brown and white team sat urday night by a score of 21 to 11 lehigh's team was greatly handi capped by injuries but put up a game fight throughout the meet the first three bouts looked well for lehigh but state excelled in the heavier weights the absence of mart and sawtelle from the line up made a difference in the score but perm state was undoubtedly the best team seen on the home floor this season the poor condition of lehigh's team was no doubt due to the fact that this meet came at the end of a series of hard contests all of which were victories for le high the results of the first part of the meet looked promising for lehigh with the call of time suppes went after jones like a flash and almost before perm state's bantam-weight knew it lehigh's doughty little wrestler had pinned his shoulders to the mat it was lehigh's only fall of the evening and incidentally another victory for suppes the little wrestler is certainly showing championship qualities although this is his first
