lehigh threatens goal only once when wynn makes long run after catching pass bruins score 4 touchdowns marquis orchestra of la fayette will provide mu sic for dancing faculty committee now sending out invitations to men chosen notice dancing practice for all candidates for cast and chor us positions in this year's mustard and cheese pro duction will begin wednes day night at 7:30 o'clock in drown hall all candidates should report now sesqui-centennial visited variety assured in drown hall co=operative ass starts campaign sale of price reduction tickets aids promin ent athletes good value the lehigh football team was decisively beaten by the brown team last saturday by the score of 32-0 the tally of the brown team consisted of four touchdowns a safety a field goal and three goals af ter touchdowns for a short time in the first quarter after the safety le high fought brown on even terms forcing her to kick after a few rushes although the ball was for most of the time in lehigh's territory the brown and white team was however able to gain little ground thru their opponents and was held hundred and fifty years of progress in civil engineering sir william ellis president of the british institution of civil engineers gave an excellent rec ord of the progress in england while m louis bade president of the french society of civil engineers ; george a walkem president of the engineering institute of canada and max krone representing dr karl wendt president of the society of german engineers recorded the progress in their respective countries several of the lehigh men con on page 4 col 7 prof.brown speaks before blake soc allentown prep conquers frosh excessive fumb 1 in g is largely responsible for 22-0 defeat the political theory of john locke was subject discussed many goals workable plan even on punting that being all that was attempted in the first half the brown backs randall mishel lawrence and edes repeatedly tore through the line for several yards gain aided by the holes made by the brown linesmen the game started inauspici ously for lehigh when o'cal laghan missed a pass from cen ter over his head recovered the ball back of his own goal line and was tackled scoring a safe ty for brown the game then see-sawed back and forth for a while with brown having a slight edge on the brown and white team in line-plunges un til a determined offense brought the ball to lehigh's ten yard line when the quarter ended in the second quarter lawrence gained nine yards on two plunges and randall carried the ball over but the play was discounted due to a penalty on brown then the bruins let loose three forwards mishel doing the tossing the first was grounded but the second gained ten yards and the third was caught by broda left end con on page 4 col 1 the bellevue-stratford hotel in philadelphia was the scene of the fifty-sixth convention of the american society of civil engineers which convened last monday representatives from all the leading nations were present to explain what had been done by their compatriots in the field of civil engineering fifteen seniors of the lehigh student chapter of the american society of civil en gineers realizing the benefits to be gained from such a con ference left monday night to spend a short time there trans portation for the most part was provided by the various speedsters owned by the more affluential civils the session on tuesday morn ing was the first one attended by the lehigh men the pro gram for this meeting was op ened by the annual address of the president of the society dr george s davison he spoke in a very interesting manner concerning his subject and won the complete attention of his hearers x the remainder of the morn ing was given over to several addresses on the topic one harriers lose in opening meet lattig to start fall lacrosse crack union team downs lehigh 39-18 after close finish practice in stick wielding to be held in camp coppee eight veterans six mile course on next saturday evening oct 16 the sword and crescent society will give its first dance of the season from 8:30 to 12 o'clock in drown hall the entire student body is in vited and as is usual at the sword and crescent dances the highest calibre music and re freshments will be provided for the entertainment of the guests the chaperones for the evening are to be dean and mrs mc conn and prof and mrs rei ter eight-thirty is the hour at which drown hall will begin to resound to the syncopation pro vided by the marquis orchestra of lafayette and until 1 2 o'clock the guests will continue to en joy the music provided by that well-known aggregation the football team of the marines will be the guests of honor for the evening and it is to be hoped that during the af ternoon on the gridiron they will be given just cause for be ing humble guests the sword and crescent in planning this dance has recog nized a long-felt need of the university — that of good social recreation on saturday eve nings with this fact in mind plans are being formed to make this the first of many similar social functions occurring as often perhaps as every satur day evening during the football season if this dance proves to be successful from the stand point of attendance and social spirit evidenced there is every reason to believe that the or ganization will feel warranted in continuing with its program con on page 4 col 6 this informal dance with good music and refreshments sponsored by such a well known organization as the sword and crescent ' is hoped and expected to draw a capa the faculty committee in charge of college lectures has negotiations under way to bring to lehigh this year several prominent speakers profes sor gipson chairman of the committee says the commit tee is hoping to be able to pro vide the finest general lectures that have yet been delivered here although no definite ar rangements have been made as yet invitations have been sent to the men considered by the committee the announcement of the lecture program for this year cannot be given out how ever until it is known definitely that these men can be secured among those who will prob ably speak to the student body is dr henry sloane coffin of union theological seminary dr coffin is well known as a great liberal thinker and as the author of several well known religious works professor ramsay muir a member of the british parlia ment and formerly professor of history at the university of manchester will most likely be scheduled for some time in no vember he is the author of many books and articles upon politics and history con on page 4 col 6 scum an effort is also being made to have appear here w e dodd professor of american history at the university of chicago when here two years ago his message left a great impression upon all who heard it professor gilbert murray as well as other men of distinction is upon this year's list the holder of many degrees from british universities professor murray has been since 1908 regius professor of greek at oxford in 1914 he was also a trustee of the british mv have you bought your stu dent co-operative association ticket yet if not are you go ing to get it soon for if you fail to do so you as a loyal le high man are missing an excel lent opportunity to aid both the university and yourself the students co-operative association was organized sev eral years ago to give promin ent athletes and other under graduates financial aid and at the same time provide lehigh students with a good discount at several well-known stores in the home team mr luchenbach will again conduct the mandolin club in a loosely played contest on taylor field the frosh foot ball team went down to defeat before the crack allentown prep team by the score of 22-0 the game was marred by fre quent fumbles and intercepted forward passes although the frosh at times showed flashes of real form they did not seem to be able to recover from the legarthy into which they were cast in the second half of the founder's day game allentown held the upper hand throughout the game al though the yearlings had sev eral chances to score mcfad den accounted for three field goals a touchdown and an ex tra point welsh also made re peated gains through the line davidowitz and johnston play ed well for the losers davidowitz started the game by kicking off for the another goal the robert w blake so ciety honorary philosophy and psychology club held its first meeting of the new year in packer hall last friday night as was announced in the last issue of the brown and white the speaker of the evening pro fessor brown of the history department talked to the so ciety on the political theory of john locke professor brown's lecture aimed to show the men the conflicting theories put forth by locke in two of his works on sovereignty professor brown first show ed locke's idea of the law of nature to be a moral law he contrasted this with hobbs idea of the same subject the latter believing it to be a law of natural impulse hobbs said professor brown painted the original state of man in nature so black that even a de spotism was superior to it he then pointed out how locke's law of nature was a workable one and how his arguments in defense of the law proved fatal to both hobbs and rousseau another advocate of despotic government at this point pro fessor brown was careful to explain that even though locke's theory was fatal to the idea of divine right of kings it was just as fatal to modern democracy con on page 4 col 4 professor brown then gave in detail the objections to locke's theory the first he said was that the existence of the law of nature which locke made workable could not be proved the second objection lehigh's varsity cross-coun try team tread the hills and dales of schenectady for a dis tance of six miles last satur day in a fruitless attempt to outdistance the mighty and well known harriers of union college the score 18-39 can not clearly illustrate lehigh's unyielding effort to win tot ten and mcmillan the two un ion stars famous for their in tentional dead-lock finishes got off to an amazingly fast start and maintained a terrific pace for the remainder of the course the strides of these two men are hard to match and they brushed by the sixth mile post with arms entwined winners all recent meets with union have been featured with this twin finish sames the bethlehem high flash and a new man in the lehigh line-up added lustre to the meet with a splendid dem onstration of his prowess he kept dangerously to the lead until suffering from a partial paralysis he was forced to concede fifth place to his union rival nadeau lehigh placed fourth sixth eighth and tenth in spite of the defeat coach kanaly's charges feel confident they can win every other run on their schedule the team is well bal anced and expects to trim dick inson in the coming meet here in bethlehem the loss means con on page 2 col 5 notice in the announcement of scholastic honors in last fri day's issue the name of na than teitelbaum jersey city n j college of arts and sciences recipient of sopho more honors was uninten tionally omitted under the tutelage of the newly appointed lacrosse coach charlie lattig the lehigh indians are due to start regular fall practice this week the men intend to get as early a start as possible with the idea of producing a team of cham pionship calibre next spring with reliable men to fill the vacancies on the team made by graduation last june the brown and white twelve promises to equal if not surpass last year's performance if the usual ac tive interest is shown in the sport coach lattig can pro duce a first class team a team that will make a strong bid for championship honors al though the loss of robinson pakenham law and schwim mer will be noticeable there is a wealth of materitl which can be developed to capably fill the gaps harry lister will pilot the team for the coming year this being his third year of varsity lacrosse among the other var sity men of last spring's team are raleigh kittinger nut ting buck and the two stauf fer brothers there are also several freshmen from last year who look promising the team will have no easy schedule among the stronger teams with which they will cross sticks are yale princeton navy stevens rutgers n y u perm and lafayette con on page 4 col 5 the turnout for the glee club is very encouraging this year as many of the old members have returned there are at the present time approximately forty men enrolled there is still room however for more men and if the applicants will report next thursday night they will receive tryouts all men wishing to try out for the mandolin club will meet on monday evening at the
