he re ceived the honorary degree of doctor of laws during the founder's day ceremonies con on page 4 col 2 doctor young has been pro minently identified in economic circles as one of the foremost executives of his generation his services to germany as co in the annual football clash on founder's day the muchly criticized sophomores revealed a fighting team that defeated the frosh 6-0 although it was a hot and sultry day and unsuited for football the game provided many thrills for the enthusiastic rooters of both sides the game marked the initial appearance of the frosh gridders although they went down to defeat they gave pro con on page 4 col 6 dads day will be observed on oct 30 annual founder's day hop a success time of muhlenberg game is chosen for enter taining dads four hundred students and friends enjoyed fine entertainment splendid co-operation and class spirit contributes to success the frosh will stroll abroad on sundays minus their dinks they won this right in the founder's day sports by tak ing four out of the five events however the meet was not so one sided as it seems each ev ent was closely contested the first clash between the two classes was the relay race the sophs under the leadership of tom chandler met the frosh in an exciting and interesting run the frosh got away to a good start and by speedy and clever running managed to gain a somewhat impressive lead however lee trantum by cov ering his lap in excellent time overtook and passed his oppon ent turning the tide in favor of the sophs through steady and careful running this lead was maintained until the last few laps by a final spurt the yearlings again gained mastery and held it until the end of the race a distance of about ten feet separated the last two runners the officials report that the race was run in fast time con on page 4 col 6 lehigh's cross-country team left bethlehem at 5:30 this morning bound for schenec tady n y where tomorrow af ternoon it will oppose in the first test of the year the strong team representing union col lege unusual interest is being manifested in this meet because union is noted for her fine hill and-dale teams while the brown and white has a squad said to be the best in many years a victory over the new yorkers will send lehigh stock soaring as an ambitious schedule has been booked for the season con on page 3 col 5 cross-country adherents on south mountain were given a pleasant surprise last friday afternoon when captain duffy aitken shattered the record for the st luke's course in the remarkable time of 29 minutes 42 and 2-5 seconds this rec ord had been held by captain bailey of dickinson who cov ered the course in 29 minutes 43 and 3-5 seconds while at mid-season form aitken's im provement is all the more evi dent when it is considered that his best previous time for the grind was made against lafay ette last year when he did it in 30 minutes and 1 8 seconds a charging that the greatest problem confronting american universities today that of fi nance is being dealt with by a method of opportunism william carter dickerman 96 vice-president of the american car and foundry company who delivered the sixty-first foun der's day address wednesday morning gave a business man's solution of this difficulty until recent years mr dickr erman pointed out the univer sities of the united states were being managed with little or no financial system university treasurers either knew nothing of budgets accounting and in vestments or worked under short-sighted policies with the crudest make-shift systems the important points which may be discerned in any report placed before a board of direc tors of a large industrial con cern are seldom found among the facts assembled for consid eration by a college board of trustees contrasting the management con on page 4 col 1 prizes and honors were awarded for the sixty-first time last wednesday when friends the faculty and students of lehigh gathered at packer memorial church for the foun der's day ceremonies the academic procession from memorial hall to the chapel marked the official opening of the exercises after the fac ulty had moved to the assigned seats t edgar shields opened the service with an organ se lection the college hymn o god our help in ages past was sung after which the rev wilmot e gateson chaplain read the scriptures and offered prayer at the conclusion of mr w c dickerman's address de grees were conferred and the winners of undergraduate priz es and scholastic awards were announced twenty-one degrees were conferred one of these that of honorary degree of doctor of laws was bestowed upon owen d young the remain ing twenty were awarded le high students who have com pleted the prescribed work since last june seven men controversial points in locke's political views played four years as an undergraduate and later as a professional revenue for year's program subscription drive to yield many applicants assure society qualified membership vacancies remain first meeting promising season merits support on october 30th the fourth annual celebration of dads day will be held on the lehigh cam pus the custom was original ed here in the spring of 1923 by the arcadia and has been repeated twice since on these occasions the general approval of the purpose and spirit shown was such that it has been de cided to set aside a day for this purpose each year con on page 3 col 1 ) the program has not as yet been decided but the speakers will be men who know lehigh and lehigh men every effort the saturday which has been set aside for this event will be on the one day of the year when the dads will be wel comed officially by both the faculty and the student body alike the committee of the arcadia is planning to make this place for this one evening then too the lifting of the ban under which the frosh had been living was another benefit but whatever causes may have con tributed to increasing the crowd it was the fine character of the entertainment itself which won those who were present con on page 3 col 5 many more elaborate func tions have secured a less fav orable verdict at the hands of a particular patronage than when the brown and white team travels to providence this saturday to meet coach mc laughry's charges at brown the lehigh men will encounter the stiffest opposition so far this season the game with the bruins marks the third successive hard tus<]e in one of the hardest schedules that the bethlehem gridders have ever undertaken the provi dence collegians will show an offensive much superior to ei ther of the teams encountered thus far this season by cap tain littell and his men since the game with gettys burg last saturday lehigh foot ball stock has taken the looked for rise because of the fact that the brown and white im proved so much over the exhi bition witnessed in the stadium when st john's was encoun tered the supporters of the team are hopefully expecting the same relative field now known as the lehigh field for what is expected to be one of the hardest games on the brown and white schedule . con on page 3 col 5 in the old days of intercolle giate leagues haverford never failed to produce a powerful ag gregation the ability of hav erford teams to win pennant after pennant was the envy of lehigh has been indeed for tunate in securing the services of charley lattig as its chief of lacrosse activities lattig has always been a resident of bethlehem and was graduated from moravian prep in 1900 he served . with the lehigh stick wielders during the years 1900 1901 1902 1903 since that time he has been in turn with the philadelphia semi professionals and the rochester lacrosse club of whose team he was captain for four years since then lattig has been con nected with lacrosse at lehigh as an assistant coach con on page 3 col 6 as lacrosse is a major sport at lehigh there is every reason to believe that an unlimited training for the lacrosse men of 1927 will probably start early this winter at camp coppee it will consist mainly of fundamentals emphasis will be laid upon the men be coming adept at stickwork and goal work will also find a pro minent place on lattig's win ter training schedule a gratifying turn-out of ap plicants for the mandolin club reported at drown ' hall last wednesday evening for the first tryout of the season although resigned as leader of the bethlehem symphony orchestra so as to be able to direct his en tire abilities to the training of the lehigh organizations last the beaux arts society or iginally the arts and
