concert and dance preced ing brown-lehigh game will be features brown band 3 year contract notice at the last frosh rush numerous valuable articles were handed to sophomores and upperclassmen and were not returned afterward most of these articles such as spectacles keys etc are useless to anyone except the owners so any student who has any of these articles should return them imme diately to the y m c a office or advertise them frosh-sophs to clash tomorrow ceremonies start in chapel at eleven followed by sports on lower field in afternoon frosh favored with the beginning of the college year and the immediate immersion into activities the student body has already be gun to function in the extra currcular line not the least among the organizations that have started work is the mus tard and cheese club a meet ing of the executive committee was held last thursday after noon at drown hall and the main course of action for the year was discussed the first step in the plan to rival or excel the success of coil-egypt is the opening of three competitions george motter has issued a call for all aspirants to the music staff to meet in drown hall thursday afternoon oct 7 at 4 p m at which time he will explain the desired type of musical scores for the 1927 production and will help anyone with ability to write scores of this nature to make a start in the competi tion an announcement was made at the beginning of the summer vacation that anyone wishing to compete in the scen ario competition could begin during the vacation and a call would be sent out soon for these scenarios several men have been working in this field and have signified their intention of presenting scen arios but there is still time for anyone interested to begin work the scenarios which must be original but of no par ticular type are to be present ed to the play committee about oct 18 anyone desiring fur ther information as to charac ter and practicability of the va rious types may get in touch with gordon ridsdale at the sigma chi house and begin work at once it might be said in this connection that the con on page 4 col 1 ) though lehigh went down to a 16-6 defeat on the gridiron last saturday when gettysburg journeyed here the brown and white team showed most en couraging form in comparison with the first game played at frequent intervals on saturday lehigh revealed a real fighting team and it is certain that be fore the season is much older a successful combination will result perhaps the most noticeable part of the game with gettys burg on saturday was the marked improvement of the le high team over its showing against st john's at times during the game it seemed as if the fighting power which has made the brown and white fa mous in the days of yore was returning but at the critical moments the team refused to hold this may have been due to the wonderful offense of the up-state team for they undoub tedly had a better attack than lehigh in tuckey and spang ler the visitors had two men who would do credit to a much larger school but lehigh was not outclass ed the team displayed team work fighting power and at times an offensive punch but their lack of experience in working together and their in ability to play consistently and to rise in order to meet the crises told heavily against them hayes and hand did some very good playing and were especially effective in an open field zahnow also showed up well in his initial perfor mance the line revealed im provement also although there were several weak points thru which the g-burgers gained con on page 4 col i successful sat arcadia presents first all college dance of year in drown hall tonight enter now no frosh curfew lafayette wins to pledge two when the lehigh ' football team goes to providence this year it will be for the purpose of playing the most important game to be played at the home field of the bruins this season for this reason the week-end of the game will be a big one socially in providence and much preparation is being made to make it the success of similar week-ends last year with the above in mind a brown-lehigh concert and dance will be given friday evening at 8:15 at sayles hall by the brown university band this affair which will be formal is open to all lehigh men and their friends and will consist of a concert from 8:15 to 9:45 and dancing from 9:45 to 1 00 the dance music will be fur nished by k d demarest of new york and his novel elev en-piece brown and white or chestra this orchestra is rep uted to be one of the best col legiate dance groups in the east this year having in its repertoire over fifty special se lections beside the regular in struments in this orchestra it boasts a trombone sousaphone three saxaphones and a violin con on page 3 col 6 the concert which the band will present will consist of two excellent solos an instrumental novelty and several classical numbers and waltzes the main part of the concert how ever will consist of popular numbers and light selections in keeping with the evening sev eral brown songs will be ren dered with a trumpet duet a saxophone solo and a banjo the prospects of having a team of championship calibre to represent lehigh on the bas ketball court this year were greatly enhanced when it was recently announced that roy geary of allentown will coach the brown and white basket eers this season to the local sport followers who are inter ested in the university athlet ics this announcement brings pleasure for they feel that the new mentor can capably con tinue in the successful trend set by the former coaches baldwin and lingle the new coach has always been actively interested in the popular winter sport in addi tion to being a player of excep tional ability he has been equal ly as fortunate in coaching pro fessional teams which have gained state-wide repute at present mr geary represents a g spalding & co in this section of pennsylvania with allentown as his home at this early time it is not known whether or not a new system of playing will be intro duced the signing of the new coach with whom a three year contract has been procured does not necessarily mean that the baldwin-lingle type of play will not be in vogue geary is well acquainted with this meth od of defense and offense and it would not be surprising to see it continue for several more years con on page after a brief discussion of the policies of sword and cres cent and an explanation of some of the activities of the organiza tion by bosey reiter the meeting adjourned tonight the arcadia will furnish entertainment as a pre liminary to the traditional founder's day an informal dance will be given at drown hall to which the entire stu dent body is invited in the past a dance on the evening before founder's day has been a marked success and it is hoped that with the announce ment that there will be no classes the following day this year's social event will prove to be a huge success from the standpoint of attendance and social spirit shown freshmen curfew rules are off for the evening and the yearlings are expected to be present in great numbers as a showing of their spirit and sup port of college functions the price of admission is one dol lar for stags and a dollar and a half per couple refresh ments are included among the features to be enjoyed during the evening's period of danc a large attendance at tonight's affair will encourage the hold ing of dances more frequently last sunday morning compe tition opened for candidates for the editorial board of the brown and white as there were only about thirty odd men out for the competition there is still opportunity for many more men to signify their in tention of competing for the much sought honor of the as sociate editorships competition will be in full swing for a period of six weeks and therefore delay of a day or so in entering will make lit tle or no difference upon making the board everyone has an equal chance in making the assistant editorships the man aging editorship and finally the exalted position of edi tor-in-chief here is a golden opportunity for men to step into cam pus activities there are twelve positions open for fresh men and sophomores — an un usual number — thus affording ample chance for at least one hundred men to compete it has been noticed that few fra ternity men have shown their intention of writing for the brown and white perhaps it was due to the fact that the meeting was called for sunday morning at any rate compe tition is still open for everyone as was stated in a previous edition whether or not a man makes the board the exper ience so gained is invaluable previous experience is unneces sary men are taught the pre requisites of journalistic writ ing and to the vis itors back 30 yards on three at tempts when they had the ball in a position to score brown lehigh's opponent next saturday showed much improvement over the previous week by trouncing colby 35 to 0 they showed plenty of strength on the offense and col by was unable to advance the ball at any time brown scor ed 1 4 points in each of the first two periods and 7 in the final period in the third they had the ball on their opponents 2 yard line but the visitors held and kicked out of danger con on page 2 col 4 princeton champion of the big three last year had a tough battle to defeat amherst last year champion of the little three by the score of 14 to 7 princeton scored in the first period on runs by slagle and prendergrast but amherst tied it up in the second period the first college meeting of the year was held last thurs day in packer hall the meet ing had originally been schedul ed to take place at the flag pole but due to the rain it was changed to packer hall it was
