the first opportunity afforded the freshmen to come into close and intimate relationship with the upper classmen presented itself in the form of the y m c a reception to the new men held in drown memorial hall friday evening of last week the evening's attendance was en couragingly greater than that of former years due probably to the fact that the date of the occasion was scheduled much earlier this year than formerly during the course of the evening a number of appropriate speeches were delivered and these interspersed with lehigh songs made the evening's enter tainment a real pleasure as the first speaker of the evening dr drinker in his usual warm and whole-hearted manner urged the freshmen to give both th^ir atten dance and their earnest efiort to the y m c a and its work at the same time pointing out the benefit to be derived therefrom he also assured all those pres ent that the faculty was not only sympathetic but furthermore will ing to do all in its power toward the betterment of athletic conditions at lehigh otto l2 next on the programme enumerated and discussed the lines of activity which were to be followed by the y m c a in its work this year laying particular stress upon the industrial work he made an urgent request that all le high men support to the best of their ability the sunday evening meetings coach reiter was then called up on and responded in his usual pleasant and earnest manner he said that there was but one man and he was the three-sided man that is the man who is developed mentally morally and physically throughout his entire talk the spir it of stick to it was very plainly manifested and he gave as an ex ample the yale-princeton game in which bill edwards said boys don't give up ! " president edwards of the senior class then gave a few words of sound advice to the freshmen strongly recommending to them that consistent work in some branch of college activities is a great asset to a new man speed 12 business manager of the brown and white spoke of the possibilities of this year's paper and impressed upon the men the necessity of their cooperation with the board in any way possible but mainly by their subscriptions he mentioned the fact that the board continued on fourth page y m c a meeting the initial y m c a meeting of the college year was held last sunday evening in drown hall the association was fortunate in having as the speaker of the even ing walter m wood head of the central y m c a of philadel phia mr wood's talk on kinetic en ergy as applied to spirituality was much appreciated by the large num ber which attended the meeting he emphasized the fact that it is not sufficient for man to possess spirituality alone to worship and adore god but that he must ra diate this spirituality so that it will come into contact with and bene fit his fellow man just as a weight lying on a shelf possesses latent en ergy which is of no value until it is connected so as to operate a ma chine so is man's spirituality of lit tle value until it can reach and in fluence for good the lives of other men dr drinker a delegate dr drinker is attending the ses sion of the third national con servation congress at kansas city mo as one of the delegates ap pointed by governor tener to rep resent the state of pennsylvania and also as representing lehigh university the university having received an invitation to partici pate in the congress dr drinker's recent visit to the upper peninsula of michigan was the means of bringing together a number of lehigh men in the dis trict whose object it was to hold an informal reunion and smoker in honor of our esteemed president when word was received that dr drinker would stop off at ishpem ing plans were immediately formu lated for a gathering worthy of the name and notices sent to those le high men who were known to be in the vicinity accordingly on the evening of august 4 1911 thirteen representatives of the brown and white sat down to an excellent sup per in the club rooms of the cleve land-cliffs iron company at ish peming michigan the table was tastefully decorated with a floral center consisting of chrysanthe mums carnations and smilax at each guest's plate was a bouton niere of brown nasturtiams and white asters in the correct colors and name-cards hand-decorated with the guest's name the lehigh pennant and a list of those present enabled all to find their proper seats without confusion after a bountiful repast ably served by the cleveland - cliffs chef mr m m duncan 80 as toastmaster in a few well-chosen words introduced dr drinker and called on him for a few remarks dr drinker responded in his usual happy manner and told of lehigh as she is today he outlined the work which had been done and the work which he plans to do and con cluded by assuring us that we could well be proud of our alma mater by this time smokes having been passed everyone was in a very enthusiastic and whoop er - up state of mind and mr duncan proceeded to call upon all present for a ' few remarks naming each one in the order of his class bye and-bye in the course of events a motion was made and enthusiasti cally seconded that we proceed to organize a lake superior lehigh club and the motion was carried with a rush officers were elected as follows m m duncan 80 president ; g r jackson 99 vice president and w w graff 01 secretary and treasurer dr drinker was made a charter mem ber of the club after the business had been con cluded the entire party united in singing favorite lehigh songs and in giving the old familiar yells the bowery grenadiers was sung by all and a snake dance or rather march was executed in time with its stirring strains dr drinker continued on fourth page the brown and white south bethlehem pa tuesday september 26 1911 vol xix dr drinker at m c of mines lake superior lehigh club y m c a gives reception no 1 first college meeting held his address on conservation very favorably received classes get together for first gathering of the year large attendance at annual event in drown hall new organization of lehigh alumni recently formed at the invitation of the president of the michigan college of mines houghton mich dr drinker took part in the exercises commemora ting the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of that institution which were held on august bth to 11th at these exercises addresses were given by a number of well-known men dr drinker spoke on the contribution of the mining profes sion to the conservation of our na tural resources other speakers were the hon charles s osborn governor of michigan the hon charles nagel secretary of com merce and labor representing the president of the united states j parke charming mining engineer of new york city george wal bridge perkins of new york city formerly a partner of j p morgan ; and dr george otis smith direc tor of the united states geologi cal survey dr drinker's address has been favorably received by the engineer ing profession and by the press at large as a sane and valuable contri bution to the discussion of the sub ject of conservation by a man whose experience well fits him to speak authoritatively on this sub ject now so widely discussed throughout the country the ad dress was quoted by the hon.m.e olmsted one of pennsylvania's members of the house of repre sentatives and appears in full in the congressional record of august 15 the initial college meeting of the year was called to order by presi dent v b edwards of the senior class at 11 o'clock friday morn ing in packer hall dr drinker was present and made a brief ad dress in which he gave a hearty welcome to the incoming class he reminded the sophomore class of the advantages of the conference department and urged those need ing extra instruction to avail them selves of this opportunity an explanation of the system of student self-government at lehigh was given principally for the edifi cation of the freshmen and in clos ing dr drinker impressed on the freshmen the necessity of getting out in the afternoon and aiding the athletic teams vice-president emery followed dr drinker and gave a short talk on the value of concentration he said that no matter what a man did whether he was studying engaged in athletics etc the best way to get along was to concentrate absolutely on the subject at hand in a rousing talk on lehigh spirit prof reiter of the department of physical education,exhorted the stu dent body to show that spirit in every phase of college life he said that lehigh spirit stood for a development that was at once men tal physical and moral,in other words stood for every qualification with which a man should be endowed he reminded the student body that the faculty had done everything in its power to aid the athletic teams and that it was up to the student body to do its part to get men out for the teams to keep the athletes in college and to support the teams on the stands capt wiley of the football team urged that more men come out for the team and asked the support of the student body on the stands terwilliger 12 spooner 11 and otto 12 gave short talks on the honor system and explained the advantages to be derived from it president edwards read the list of college customs for the benefit of the freshmen lehigh university
