assistant managers elected prof richards of the depart ment of metallurgy went to nor way this summer with the intention of visiting all the electro-chemical plants in norway and sweden un fortunately his visit was cut short by the dangerous illness of his mother and his trip into sweden was abandoned but he visited nine of the fourteen electro-chemical plants in norway and attended the 100 year jubilee of the university of christiania as a representative of lehigh university among the electro - chemical plants visited were the nitric acid plant at christianssant using the schonherr process the aluminium works at vennisla near christians sant and at stangfjord using the heroult process ; the calcium car bide works at odde the sodium works at vadein on the sogne fjord using the castner process ; the electrolytic nickel and copper refinery at christianssant using the hybinette process ; the electric pig iron furnaces at tyssedal hardanger fjord the electric zinc plant at tyssa the electric steel furnaces at jossing fjord using the hiorth induction furnace ; the jorpeland electric steel plant on the stavanger fjord using the roechling - rodenhauser induction electric furnace the industrial circles in nor way and sweden said prof richards show immense activity in electro-chemical developments ; most of the managers of the plants are swedish german or english the capital is swedish german and norwegian these countries are setting an example to the whole world of very cheap development of water power and its application to various nncrw r electro - chemical processes the jubilee of the university of christiania said prof richards was a national function attended by two hundred delegates from uni versities all over the world and in cluded a reception by the king and queen the whole of norway was en fete and highly interested in the general recognition thus giv en by other countries of the stand ing and achievements of their national university vice-president emery and prof w c thayer will represent lehigh university at the historical com memoration of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of henry melchior muhlenberg to be held at muhlenberg college on october 12th at allentown pa the extension courses offered last year to teachers and in fact to anyone at all in town or out of town proved so desirable and successful that they will be taken up again this year prof hughes who has charge of the courses states that the inquiries concerning them are more numerous this year than ever before and the attendance bids fair to be as large as can be comfortably accommodated the courses offered are as fol lows : — american history prof stewart biology - - prof hall business law - prof stewart history of education prof hughes german-elementary prof palmer german-intermediate prof palmer latin literature - prof blake logic - - prof hughes philosophy - prof hughes physiography - prof blake psychology prof hughes the charges for the courses are very reasonable and diplomas are given for courses completed the time of these courses is saturday and by special arrangement any evening students in these courses are entitled to the use of the com mons and of the library these courses are very common in all english colleges and are well attended and appreciated by those of more advanced age to whom the advantages of a higher education were not available the attendance is not limited to school teachers but includes anyone who cares to take advantage of this excellent oppor tunity ladies taking both a morn ing and an afternoon course will find rooms reserved for their ac commodation in drown hall these courses begin on saturday october 7 1911 and continue until may 18 1912 application should be made to either the registrar or to prof hughes in this work the university is again taking the initiative in this section of the country and the re sult will be as favorable as lehigh's firm stand last year for the preser vation of forests the university is fortunate indeed in having in its faculty men of such ability as the professors in charge of this branch of the university's work prof richards to leave on saturday at a short meeting of the three upper classes held at 1 1 o'clock fri day morning in packer hall t a bryant 13 and ezra bowen 13 were elected assistant managers of the football and baseball teams respectively president edwards urged a larger attendance at cheering prac tices manager smyth of the foot ball team announced a special train to the princeton game on october the eleventh leaving south bethle hem about noon it was announced that the arca dia would offer a prize of 5 for the best original cheer a prize of 5 for the best song of original words and music and a prize of 2 for the best original words to a popular air competitors must have their com positions in before october the fourteenth a call was made for candidates for the band of which the prac tices will be announced later on september 27 gurney h dayett c e 09 of wilmington del was married to miss alice m ferguson of newark del continued on fourth page lehigh won her second game of the season on saturday by better staying powers and superior team work the game was a tie-up to the last few minutes of play when lehigh secured the ball on western maryland's 30-yard line creigh ton and mccaffrey made 8 yards each and creighton tore through tackle almost to the goal line wes tern maryland held on the next down but on the next mccaffrey slipped around end and planted the ball between the goal post day ton kicked goal and lehigh had won — 11 to 5 a fair-sized crowd turned out to see the game for which ideal football weather prevailed the only drawback was that the field was slightly heavy from previous rains western maryland surprised le high during the first few minutes of play on a fake leary made 20 yards and birdsall made 20 yards more being downed on lehigh's i yard line the next two plays saw western maryland thrown back to the 4-yard line on the next play western maryland faked an end run and ' bowers the diminutive quarterback slid through the line and scored western maryland failed to kick goal score sto 0 r lehigh retaliated in the second period by steady end runs and line plunges she pushed the ball down to western maryland's 10 yard line on the next play knox plow r ed outside of left tackle for lehigh's first score dayton failed to kick goal leaving the score a tie 5 to 5 neither side scored in the third quarter but the ball was in western maryland's territory the greater part of the time the last quarter was a repetition of the third until the last few minutes of play when mccaffrey and creighton by suc cessive rushes pushed the ball over for the winning score the game was fast and hard fought throughout the teams ap peared to be about equal in speed but lehigh had the advantage in weight and western maryland was unable to gain much in straight football she resorted to forward passes and onside kicks and in sprague and twiggy she has a for ward pass combination hard to beat their work baffled the lehigh ends considerably for lehigh the work of pozzetti at quarter was a feature mccaffrey and creighton distinguished themselves by their groundgaining knox also showing his ability in this department and the whole line played an excellent prof richards leaves on next saturday for san francisco to at tend the meeting of the american institute of mining engineers and thence he with mrs richards and miss richards will go with the ex cursion to japan chem ical society was held thursday evening in saucon hall the new officers presided and the good at tendance at the meeting augurs well for a successful year after president herr had made a short address dr ullmann read letters from former officers of the society h n keefe 09 and l r carrier 09 expressing their best wishes for the society dr ullmann also read extracts from sir william ramsay's address on the advancement of science publish ed in science he stated that if the energy of a ton of radium could be utilized it would propel a ship of 15,000 tons and 15,000 h p at a rate of 15 knots per hour for 30 years which would require 1,500,000 tons of coal in discussing the dis integration he further stated that were one gram of radium kept for 1760 years only half of it would have disappeared as radium emana tion or niton and the inactive gas helium after dr ullmann had concluded j n taylor of george washing ton university told about the chemical society of that institu tion
