gettysburg brings powerful team here on saturday vol xxxiv no 3 program for founders day includes address by alumnus plans being completed for founder's day dance and dads day dictions favor them this season visitors always provide excellent opposition and pre approximately 170 men of the class of 1930 ac cept bids official of american car and foundry company will be principal speaker at service four sophomores and eight freshmen to be elected third of class game is called for 3:00 judge packer held enviable name to assist y m c a highest men win wearied by the heat it was still unmarked by any evidence of a sustained driving power in lehigh's backfield con on page 3 col 3 gettysburg always fights persistently against the brown remembering this fact and arguing largely with it as a premise many declared that to morrow's game will be a repe tition on a larger scale of the st john's game and the claims are not entirely with out supporting evidence lehigh university like so many other of our american institutions owes its inception and its endowment to the open handed benefactions of one who saw the needs of his state and with noble generosity en deavored to supply the means for meeting them therefore next wednesday has been set aside to honor the founder of lehigh university hon asa packer with proper exercises judge packer was born at first appearance of burr oct 16 slight interest shown by sophs freshman number will contain well - chosen special features founder's day sports win small recognition from - second year men circultion large no relay runners approximately one hundred and seventy men of the six hundred and fifty in the class of 1930 were pledged by the various fraternities at the close of rushing season on sat urday evening following is a list of the fraternities with the men they pledged in the case of several of the local fra ternities it is impossible to ob tain the figures at the time this issue goes to press : alpha chi rho ralph barthold 30 bethlehem pa john curtin jr 30 bellefonte pa theodore heinmeyer 30 elizabeth n j paul hickman 30 arlington n j calvin huntoon 30 swarthmore pa maurice jones 30 bethlehem pa alpha tau omega john boland . 30 wilkes-barre pa howard datwyler 0 flushing n y con on page 2 col 3 groton new london county connecticut dec 29 1805 and for the first few years of his life worked for his father soon he began to shift for himself and finally after several busi ness enterprises which were successes and which made him moderately prosperous he be came interested in the lehigh valley railroad from that time on his wealth accumulated and his name became synony mous with unsullied integrity and well earned success con on page 4 col 1 he desired to devote a por tion of the wealth that it had been god's grace to give him to the founding of an institu tion for the intellectual and moral improvement of the young men of that region from which he had obtained a great part of his wealth namely the lehigh valley accordingly with the help of the right rev william baron stevens he founded lehigh university in corporated feb 9 1866 and from that time was legally rec ognized at one time judge packer did away with fees en tirely and he was constantly whether or not the game with st john's college played on taylor field last saturday afternoon is to be taken as a cross-section sample of lehigh's season will be determined no doubt tomorrow afternoon when a powerful aggregation from gettysburg college locks horns with the brown . and white many persons are wondering just what the lehigh combina tion can do and frankly they are not overly enthusias tic about the prospects for the remaining games of the season the exhibition against st john's was not reassuring how greatly the game was in fluenced by the intense mid summer heat can only be imag ined but nonetheless lehigh's opponents had to play under the same incumbrance looked at from any angle the final verdict concerning the first game must be this that le high lacked the punch in the backfield while the game bar ring the fumble and the touch down which resulted was a tussle between two teams each intra-mural run this afternoon the initial meeting of the arcadia for the year 1926-27 was held in the arcadia room of drown hall at 7:30 p m last monday evening ' president nutting presided and opened the meeting by re questing that the heads of the living groups co-operate with the administrative offices in sending material for the week ly bulletin of events which is sent to each of the fraternities and dormitory sections it is planned to make this bulletin a more extensive and better thing and it needs the co-op eration of every class and or ganization officer as well as those who are familiar with the probable date of occurrence of an important happening of interest to the student body the booster committee was then instructed to prepare plans for founder's day as well as for several of the foot ball games this fall and to present a report at the next arcadia meeting suggestions were then requested by the chairman of the committee con on page 4 col 6 comment was made regard ing the hello habit mr lehigh band now twenty years old class of 26 has financial balance this event is intended merely to classify varsity material new features for musical clubs first group ever to graduate with a surplus on hand letter from alumnus gives idea of how the organiza tion was established tentative program includes trip to new jersey and philadelphia prospects good 40 members today installs bench call candidates the lehigh burr the maga zine for which everyone has been looking is due to make its first appearance for the year about the sixteenth of october business manager ames who has charge of this number has bent all his efforts toward mak ing the first issue a very unu sual one the burr is coming out better than ever this year and great increase in the cir culation department is expect ed the college gloom chaser as is customary will open with a special freshman number this copy will be the prodigal number and it will be put to press within the next few days the subscription list is very large this year and judging from the quantity and the qual ity of the material turned in every subscriber will certainly be satisfied with the product the majority of the cartoon con on page 3 col 5 founder's day is less than a week away and founder's day brings with it a series of interesting contests which bear a direct relation to the for tunes of the frosh class and not infrequently to those of the sophomore class as well , to win the majority of ev ents in the tussle with the soph omores means additional privi leges to the first year men and therefore they invariably pres ent a formidable contest to the sophomores however vie tory or defeat has no direct threat it does bring disgrace because it bespeaks a class of little organization and less spir it in view of these conditions the founder's day sports may usually be relied upon to un cover some entertaining and enthusiastic rivalry con on page 4 col 4 this year this does not seem to be likely if present activity among the underclassmen may on sunday morning at 1 1 o'clock in drown hall there will be a meeting of the pros pective candidates for the edi torial board of the brown and white it is strongly urged that a number of men from the soph omore and freshman classes report for this competition the more the better since the keen er the competition the better the grade of work there are at present vacancies for four sophomores and eight or nine freshmen no previous jour nalistic experience is neces sary and any man who is will ing to work and stick at it stands a good chance of mak ing the board whether or not a man is for tunate enough to make the board the experience gained is invaluable in addition to the ability of self expression ob tained there is acquired an in timate contact with the events happening around college that is well worth any effort to se cure and the thrill of seeing an article in print is a case where realization exceeds ex pectation . con on page 3 col 5 the new men for the board are selected on a basis of mer it each man is given an as signment or perhaps several men may have the same assign ment in which case the best article will be chosen these articles are graded and award ed a certain number of points depending on their length and quality additional points are given for scoops i.e unassign ed articles this is to stimu late individual effort at the end of the competition which will run till around thanksgiv ing the points will be totalled and the four highest sopho soccer team opens season saturday new class hours in physical ed college dance on tuesday evening temple booters are first to meet ambitious veterans wide latitude allowed so as not to burden students freshmen regulations sus pended to permit frosh attendance due to the fact that there is an unusual amount of conges tion prior to a football game and also because the varsity cross-country men will have to pom their training to the un ion meet just one week hence coach kanaly has decided to run off the annual intra-mural race today this run is merely for classi fication of the varsity material since the squad is made up of the same men as last year there is little doubt as to those who will make up the person nel of the team captain ait ken chickering laudig bar ba lasher and fine are all men who have represented the brown and white before of the remaining fifteen men who are out for the team there are some whose worth is sure to come out in this trial run some having been stars in their re spective schools con on page 4 col 6 the run will be staged at twenty minutes past four start ing at the entrance to the gym and ending on the road back the class of 1926 has ac cording to andy buchanan alumni secretary established a record as the first class to graduate with a surplus in the class treasury the financial statement is sued september fifteenth show ed that the class had cash on hand to the amount of 246.31 the money has been appro priated for an ornamental mar ble bench to be placed in the hall of the memorial building the bench has been designed by the architect of the building itself which insures its being in harmony with the lines of the majestic building in which it is to be located at one end of the bench will be inscribed the numerals of the class con on page 3 col 5 the goal reached by the class of 1926 is one toward which many preceding classes have striven its attainment means probably that oncom ing classes will do the same thing but none the less to last year's seniors belongs the credit of being the first the statement follows financial statement class of with the re-opening of school the department of physical education finds it necessary to publish its list of classes in an effort to avoid continued con fusion and misunderstandings prof bartlett has done this primarily for the benefit of the new men who are expected to read carefully the following schedule and then to register on the right day and at the proper time con on page 4 col 6 the schedule allows sufficient latitude as to enable the stu dent to arrange his class with out handicap or inconvenience the schedule provides mass gym classes every afternoon at four o'clock corrective exer cises every forenoon at ten o'clock boxing at 4:4 on tuesday and friday after noons fencing at four o'clock this year will be the twen tieth anniversary of the found ing of the lehigh university band this fact was brought to light by a recent letter from a lehigh alumnus to w r oke son 98 president of the le high alumni association in which he describes his part in the founding of the organiza tion h h ketchum 09 the writer of the letter who now devotes a considerable portion of his time to the training of boy scout bands tells how the band was first started the old orchestra died in the end of my freshman year in 1906 in the beginning of my sophomore year i suggest ed to g r homer ' 1 0 french horn who played in the orches tra that we form a band he then goes on to relate how he and homer hunted up e e ross 08 who played the trom bone and a b lakey 09 who like ketchum played the cornet these four were the nucleus of the organization it thrived for in the following spring a picture taken of the band shows a membership of nineteen almost half of the size of the present organiza tion the honor of being the first leader fell to ross but it was somewhat in the nature of a mixed blessing since he had to play the trombone and lead at the same time a rather diffi con on page 4 col 2 notice all persons who want their copies of the 1927 epitome should see j p cox theta xi house before founder's day no copies will be saved after that time next tuesday evening just prior to founder's day the ar cadia will sponsor a dance to which the entire student body is invited this excepting the freshman reception of last friday evening will be the first college social function of the year inasmuch as this will be the first saturday there will be a welcome dance for the frosh in drown hall the success or failure of this dance will determine future policy admission 1.00 tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock the lehigh booters will play temple university on the home field the philadelphians have always been credited as being expert soccer players and keen competition is ex pected the home team with eight letter men back has been prac ticing all this week and is looking forward to winnnig the first intercollegiate contest saturday's game will in all probability be a speedy match replete with action and good playing the game will start at one o'clock sharp and will be over in plenty of time for all foot ball fans to get to the game on the lower field it has been requested that all men come out and see the first soccer game of the season the character of our pro grams will be essentially differ ent this year we have in our tentative plans features which will cater to the campus in ad dition to the outsiders the preceding paragraph may be taken as the essence of an interview with president degray of the combined musi cal clubs the officers of the society have formulated a sche dule which should prove the in centive towards a banner year for the clubs several trips all of which are to large cities are pending in fact the only thing remaining is the formal ity of signing the contracts pottstown and two cities in northern new jersey will be visited with a possible exhibi tion in philadelphia in speaking of the form of entertainment which the clubs will present president degray promises a better variety than has previously been given both clubs are fortunate in retaining their leaders of last season professor p edgar shields will guide the glee club while the instrumental club will again be under the capable di rection of mr luckenbach con on page 3 col 4 try-outs for positions on both clubs will be held at the earliest possible time for it is the desire of the directors to get an
