an interesting account of a west ern tour by professor mckibben was the feature of the initial meet ing of the civil engineering socie ty on wednesday evening after the usual business the sub ject of taking freshmen into the society was discussed and it was decided to have the executive com mittee submit such an amendment to the constitution to be voted on at the next meeting president solly then appointed the following-committees : poster committee — hadsall snyder and miller social and entertainment committee — fuller peters and benjamin the speaker of the evening was introduced and then followed over an hour of interesting talk this western trip was the first vacation professor mckibben has taken in fifteen years and judging from his account he has made it a good one the lecture was accompanied by lantern slides and all reference to engineering was omitted after outlining his trip professor mckibben gave an interesting des cription of the petrified forest ex hibiting an actual piece of the stone he described exactly how the caves of the cliff-dwellers are constructed and then showed a series of beauti ful slides picturing all the natural wonders of yosemite valley and yellowstone park alaska was also included in the trip and some fine pictures of that country were shown professor mckibben's talk was interwoven with many interesting personal experiences and stories the meeting adjourned after adjournment the commissary de partment of the society pleasantly entertained the crowd for an hour the arts and science club has issued a circular letter telling of their work as outlined for the com ing year one feature of this work is expressed by a recently adopted by-law requiring that at least two meetings a year be given over to debating this is certainly a worthy effort to revive what at one time w r as a means of placing le high before the eyes of the intel lectual college world and as such should receive the hearty coopera tion of every student in college professors hughes blake and stewart are all heartily in favor of this side of the club's work and are doing all they can to promote it it must be remembered that all students in the university are eligible to membership of this club and it being the one club in college which calls forth papers and dis cussions on many varied topics it extends to all its members the ad vantage of instruction both inter esting and broadening the first meeting will be held m saucon hall thursday october 26th and will be given over to the first debate of the year subject that the arbitration treaties now before the senate should be rati fied as amended by senator root any one is qualified to enter who hands his name stating on which side of the question he will speak to e s colling 430 seneca street of going to press it had not been learned definitely whether gen beaver will be able to address the politics club or not on sunday afternoon but since he has planned to remain in town over sunday it country of mexico in substance he said that mexico is a large country and has a good deal of coast line hav ing 1700 miles on the east and 2300 miles on the west coast the area of the country is 763,000 square miles the country as a whole is sparsely populated averaging about 20 persons per square mile dur ing the past year the international boundary has been a matter of great question railroad communication between the states and mexico is very good there being about seven different points where the boundary-line is crossed the topography of mexi co is really what makes it what it is it has a hot a temperate and a cold zone the general moun tain trend is north west and south east and there are here some of the highest mountains on the american continent these mountains have made railroad building in the coun try very difficult in these moun tains are several volcanoes and some extremely high peaks which are very beautiful for 300 years after the conquest spain ruled the country and mining was the only industry encouraged the span ish yoke however finally became sq heavy that the people rebelled and established a republic of their own after this the country was in a state of unrest and rebellion for a number of years in 1876 diaz assumed the presidency and since that time he has done a great deal for the country but having one government for so long has recently ursinus game tomorrow prof mckibben addresses civils visitors come here with a good reputation he lectures on mexico and his experiences there will hold a debate which any one may enter gives interesting account of his western trip tomorrow the brown and white team will line up for what looks to be one of the hardest contests of the season ursinus has always had a reputation for putting out good football teams and this year they are up to their former records they ha<e played penn lafayette and franklin and marshall and while they have but one victory to their credit they have made an ex cellent showing in every game against penn ursinus played a good defensive game and were par ticularly brilliant on the offense gaining six yards to every yard gained by penn they were how ever beaten by 9 to 0 penn making a touchdown and a field goal ur sinus also put up a very pretty game against lafayette and were beaten only by a field goal in the second period of the game the f and m team was defeated without much trouble although the game was ragged and poorly played the ursinus team has been work ing hard all week in preparation for the lehigh game and comes here in the pink of condition the game should be of particular inter est to lehigh followers as it gives some opportunity of comparing the strength of our team with that of lafayette's the brown and white aggregation is
