in the simple splash system a supply of oil was contained in the crank-case into which the connect ing-rod dipped at each revolution of the crank this system was much used on earlier models of cars but came into disrepute on account of the varying oil level in the crank case which caused irregular lubri cation this system was replaced by a system of multiple feed mechanical oilers these oilers consisted of prismatic oil reservoirs containing a set of plunger pumps forcing the oil through individual oil leads to all the different parts requiring lu brication this system was effec tive but too complicated and a sim pler system was desired in the force feed non-splash sys tem oil is drawn from a reservoir by means of a pump and forced to the main bearings of the crank shaft an oil gauge on the dash in dicates the pressure acting upon the oil the oil may either pass through a distributor to each of the main bearings or through leads connected in parallel the former arrange ment is the better in the gravity feed non-splash system a reservoir is placed above the cylinder heads and oil is fed from it by gravity to each of the crank shaft bearings through oil tubes and holes drilled in the crank case wall from the main bearings the oil flows through the hollow crank-shaft to the crank-pin bear ings and in some cases to the piston pin bearings the rest of the bear ings being as his reason for the cancellation the de pressed financial condition of their athletic association the next basketball game will be played next wednesday in the gym against lebanon valley college politics club dues lacrosse an encouraging number of men were present at the december meet ing of the civil engineering society and two excellent talks were given after the routine business had been disposed of c j flayhart 12 gave the first an interesting account of the baltimore sewerage disposal plant on which subject he proved himself to be well capable of lec turing he stated how the system that has been used up until the councils appointed 6,000,000 for a sanitary drainage system was 50 years behind the times and utterly incapable of serving a city of 700,000 population and scattered over 13 square miles his talk was made clearer by constant ref erence to charts and black-board sketches and was thoroughly enjoy ed by all present president w c solly next in troduced mr chase superinten dent in charge of the reading sewerage disposal plant the sewerage disposal problem is pure ly of recent origin being due to the rapid increase of the population of our cities the first call for action in this direction came in 1850 in england but not before it was ab solutely necessary the first prac tical and useful experiments made however were not until 1885 when the massachusetts board of health took up the problem with the out come that the practice of putting the waste through sand beds was resorted to sewerage is not as of fensive when fresh as people im agine and he backed up this start ling statement by passing around a sample of some sewerage taken that morning at reading but to dump this into streams is to place fish and even human health in serious dan ger by means of slides he described how reading separates the floating matter the sewerage comes from the mains into a large tank and then drops onto a revolving screen which throws all the larger particles to the side where they are collected in bags ground and finally used as fuel to furnish power for the whole system slides picturing the sewerage plants in different cities were next thrown on the screen in worces ter mass the chemical precipita ting tanks are used but are too ex pensive and have not been very successful in ohio the sludge is dumped into the river during the flood seasons the sewerage of england is generally run into farms which are after a while ploughed and crops raised on them but the continued on third page lacrosse practice will be held every wednesday and saturday af ternoons at 2.30 o'clock in the cage this is the last day for the pay ment of the politics club dues for the current year and all those who have not yet paid up are requested to see v b pointed out before in these columns the show will be some thing novel and it is safe to say entirely different from anything ev er seen by the majority of the stu dents the scene is laid on the deck of a ship off the coast of flor ida the opening chorus intro duces a number of old-time sea songs among them songs from pinafore and the mikado there in succession come coon songs and ballads mingled with some of the funniest jokes of the season all entirely new and never sprung before on the campus among the singers will be wragg 13 porter 12 francis 12 hussa 15 liebig 14 chandler 15 fuller 12 and colling 12 the two premiere ends will be bryant l3 and packard l3 these men are an extremely funny pair and each sings a good coon song in a way to bring down the house as two renegrade negroes who steal a motor boat and back it into the yacht they are inimitable a good march song we'll trav el back to old lehigh written by colling 12 especially for this show winds up the performance after the show the floor will be cleared and dancing will continue until midnight you may appear either in full dress or in every day clothes just as you choose re freshments will be served at eleven special scenery built by the or pheum theatre of easton is now in place on the stage in drown hall a large orchestra will accompany the show and afterwards play for the dance the association has gone to a great deal of trouble and heavy ex pense to make the show a success and it can safely promise that you will not be stung this is the li bretto for which al field offered a large sum it was refused the authors thinking that they could make more money by renting it as at this performance the rumors about trouble over this use of the libretto were indicated a more se rious affair than was really the case the matter was smoothed over nice ly and the show will be produced in its entirety tickets are on sale at gross's and heiberger's confectionery stores first 18 rows are 1.00 which in her opening game on wednesday even ing at princeton met princeton uni versity in basketball the game was of the type that kept the spec tators throughout in an uncomfort able state of suspense neither side being able to forge points at any time lehigh was the first to score and maintained a lead during the first half the score at the end of that period being 15 to 12 in le high's favor princeton's large floor with an out-of-bounds on the four sides was a factor that materially influenced the work of our team again and again lehigh's long passes were in tercepted by the princeton guards because our men were unaccustom ed to the long swift passes neces sary on a floor of that size during the second half the score see-sawed continually it being prac tically a tie until the end of the game there was considerable foul ing on both sides lehigh being charged with 19 and princeton with 17 fouls in the shooting of foul goals heath proved himself supe rior to muthart the former scoring 11 goals while muthart scored 8 with 40 seconds to play and a score of 26 to 25 in lehigh's favor the ball was tossed up under prince ton's goal and in the tap off vaugh an one of princeton's football stars succeeded in pocketing the ball which gave princeton a lead of one point five seconds before the game ended princeton fouled but muthart by a small margin failed to gain the goal necessary to
