at noon in saucon hall for the purpose of nominating men for the class-book committee if the attendance at the meeting justifies it the elections will also take place at the same time all the members of the class are strong ly urged to be present brown and white picture the brown and white board picture will be taken at mccaa's studio tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock only those members are eligible who were on the board at the beginning of the year friday meeting the subject of the second address by dr weatherford was the law of environment and the address was given before a large attendance of the student body at the y m c a meeting friday morning at 11 o'clock • the meeting was opened shortly after eleven by the singing of one or two hymns and a prayer led by edward c mercer dr weatherford then took the floor and delivered a very interesting and helpful talk according to psychology a man is governed by his surroundings or environments there are forces which tend to draw him in their own direction and to which he is compelled to submit dr weather ford however asserted that the on ly environments which a man has are his own determination self confidence and ideals he is not directed by the forces which sur round him but by the things upon which he centres his attention and what he centres his mind upon dare not be restricted to one motive but upon a number of things which tend to make up a supreme ideal and sends him out into the world with a true character dr weatherford concluded by making an earnest plea for more interest in religious college life an interest which is essential to all col lege men the meeting was closed by singing several hymns the picture of the basketball team will be taken at two o'clock to morrow afternoon at mccaa's stu dio the following men are re quested to report coach hagen buch manager yake asst mana ger cosgrove captain cook mut hart a k white cole and p j white m e meet postponed due to unforseen difficulties there will be no mechanical engi neering society meeting tonight thursday meeting the campaign was opened on thursday afternoon and a surpris ingly large audience was assembled to hear dr weatherford give an excellent address upon the power of an unbroken record dr weatherford said that when a man has an unbroken record be hind him it enables him to have confidence in himself and it enables other men to believe in him con fidence is the basis of real college spirit and in order to have confi dence you must believe that there is a clean life behind the man unless you believe in yourself others can not believe in you when a man knows he is in the right there is a force always urging him on to greater things we have only one chance to have an unbroken record saturday meeting after the singing of several popu lar college songs professor reiter opened the saturday evening meet ing by a few well-chosen remarks the subject advertised for satur day night and the one for sunday morning were interchanged so dr the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday january 16 1912 vol xix the university y.m.c.a campaign a great success lehigh defeats gettysburg by score of 35-18 brown and white quintette wins well attended meetings in drown hall on thursday friday saturday and sunday addressed by dr weatherford much interest shown by the student body to have a white name and some of us are losing that chance dr weatherford closed his ad dress with an appeal to men not to think that because their record was broken that it was too late but to start anew and have an unbroken record from now on the series of meetings held last week under the auspices of the uni versity y m c a were brought to a most successful termination on sunday night the final meeting was easily the most enthusiastic and the best attended of the campaign and came as a fitting climax ad dresses were made at all the meet ings by w d weatherford ph d who directed the campaign dr weatherford is a native of texas and graduated from one of the col leges of that state in 1895 he be came a student at vanderbilt uni versity where he took the degrees of b a m a and ph d while at vanderbilt he was active in col lege affairs an excellent basketball player and the best gymnast of his day on leaving college he accept ed his present work and for nine years has been a travelling secretary of the college young men's chris tian association meetings were held in drown hall on thursday friday saturday and twice on sunday all were ex ceedingly well attended and have undoubtedly aroused an immense amount of interest in the student body dr weatherford was ably assist ed in his work by j w pontius and ed c mercer lehigh added another victory to her credit on saturday night when the basketball team defeated the gettysburg quintette 35-18 the score does not indicate the real facts as the visitors covered up well and made things interesting at all times in the opening of the first half the lehigh team did not get togeth er as quickly as usual and the score was low at the start everyone seem ed to have difficulty in holding the ball and long passes were frequent ly intercepted the opposing centers had an in teresting battle throughout the game muthart was frequently out jumped by leathers but had more goals than his opponent the white combi nation played their usual strong game at forward and in the second half showed their real speed by scoring 14 of the 18 points weatherford delivered in a force ful manner the college man's battle the two key-notes which dr weatherford sounded throughout his entire discussion were purity in mind body and habits and an inde fatigable ambition to do right every man dr weatherford said is always engaged in a great fight for he can never expect to gain anything or attain any position in life without effort a man must fight to pass his examinations and to keep in college besides more strongly to keep his own character from stain in order to hold his own a man must keep fighting con tinually and at the same time re serve sufficient nervous energy to tide him over the hard places this is a strenuous age the ideals by which matter were for merly measured have been so con siderably raised in the last score of years that it keeps a man fighting to hold his position this is not a time of mediocrity wealth is measured in much larger terms than formerly the ideals of education have been raised and the moral and social standing of men have been elevated for these reasons much more is expected of a man and after graduating from college don't pat yourself on the back and sit happily down thinking you are widely educated but keep on study ing and reading and your motto no 28
