football picture to-morrow the varsity football picture will be taken tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock at mccaa's studio the men can obtain their uniforms at the field house ; after the picture is taken the uniforms will be removed by the football management from the studio to the field house continued on supplement experienced in this work but he is — shall i say brutal — no it is not quite that — but near it in his en forcement of his personal authority over the asiatic i think that the american is apt to be gentler and more tactful — but if we are to judge the means by the end attain ed — we may well reserve criticism for whatever may have been the mistakes of the past — whether the sepoy mutiny was precipitated by the sacrilege to the hindu of mak ing him bite off the end of a car tridge greased with cow's fat and by the affront to the mussulman of cartridges greased with the fat of the to him abhorred pig — today our english cousins with the ex perience of the past behind them and the sense of duty that is ever present with them are manifestly handling and governing india with a real desire to do justice and to rule wisely and well in all history there is no more wonderfully striking a picture than that presented by the political chan ges in the map of india announced by the king-emperor at the coro nation durbar at delhi on this de cember 12th during the incum bency of lord curzon the late vi ceroy owing to unrest in the prov ince of bengal it was on his mo tion divided this action seems to have only intensified the trouble there was also the larger question whether calcutta situated at the east of india recognized mainly as a historic and present british and european trading community was the proper capital for the india em pire as lord crewe the secretary of state for india has well said of this many of the circumstances which explain the selection of fort will iam in the eighteenth century as the head-quarters of the east india company cannot now be adduced as arguments for the permanent re tention of calcutta as the capital of british india one great trait in our anglo saxon race is that we are not ashamed or afraid to acknowledge and to correct our mistakes you know that it takes a strong man to do this a weak man will mistake obstinacy for firmness and persist in his error in their deliberate fair thorough-going way the english thro their indian and home gov ernments studied the matter and the following extract from the mes sage under date of august 25th last from the present viceroy lord hardinge and the india council to lord crewe indicates the broad liberal view taken — tomorrow night lehigh's basket ball team meets brown university at providence it is anticipated that the game will be one of the most severe that our team will play on a foreign floor the score as usual may be ob tained shortly after the game by calling bell 735 cook cole a k white p j white muthart hagenbuch grif fith and yake will editor of the brown and white the poor benighted hindu he does the best he kin dv he sticks to his caste from first to last and for clothes he makes his skin dv this highly ornate verse was given me by an englishman — and do you know it epitomizes astonishingly well the individual englishman's attitude to the native ! last sunday week the 17th mrs drinker took me with her to church at a mission in benares there was present a fair congregation of english with some americans and a large com pany of british soldiers from the scot's guards in red coats and blue plaid the stewart tartan — substituted for the highland kilt they came to chapel marching to the skirling of a bag-pipe the pi per striding on ahead with all the dignity pertaining to a highland pi per the sermon was a wonder fully able appeal from an earnest cultured man to his british fellow countrymen to treat the hindu na tive kindly and as a fellow-man how it impressed tommy atkins i don't know but what i do know is that we found our native servant whom after the custom of the country we had engaged who is a christian hindu born of hindu parents converted to christianity sitting outside on the chapel steps as we turned to go after the ser vice on my asking him why he had not entered he humbly and submissively replied that the hindu sexton not an englishman had ordered him to stay outside in dicating clearly the sharp line of de markation that the natives them selves have learned to think that the superior race wish to maintain in congratulating the clergyman after the service on his sermon which as i above said was a won derfully eloquent and telling deliv erance i had a little fun with him over this incident which so point edly illustrated the complexity of the situation which he was trying to mend but i think there is a difference in our handling of the problem the englishman is conscientious devo ted to duty strong self-reliant and the english are doing a great work for india when one realizes what our english cousins have done and are doing in india and in egypt in carrying their heavy share of the white man's burden — and what we are doing in the philippines — we may well be
