order that they may take part in the active general de bate which the subject promises to furnish continued on fourth page in a game of basketball that was as nearly an exact parallel of the princeton-lehigh game on decem ber 13th at princeton as one could imagine lehigh on saturday night lost to brown university at provi dence by the score of 27 to 26 with a few minor changes the press articles of the princeton game would fit the brown game equally well the providence papers stated that the game was the most excit ing closest and hardest fought game witnessed at lyman gym in many a day enthusiasm ran high throughout the game and the stu dents who packed the building whooped it up in great style for both teams in the audience was a small group of lehigh men and in termittently there rang out a le high yell that always brought out the applause of the brown students brown's floor rule concerning the possession of the ball when it went out of bounds was exactly opposite to the way the 1912 rules suggest and the way our men have been ac customed to playing the rule re quires that the ball belongs to the first man to touch it after it has gone out of bounds ; brown's floor rule awarded the ball to the oppo nent of the man who touched it first it was difficult for our men to adapt themselves to this rever sion and about three fourths of the out of bounds resulted in brown's ball since many of brown's passing rallies started from an out of bound ball a number of which resulted in goals this rule had its effect on the result of the game muthart at the opening of the second half put three points to our credit before brown woke up then both teams put up a fast game and the floor work was of a high order lehigh played a lightning passing game and in this depart ment excelled their opponents brown as in her previous games showed a weakness in shooting free tries from fouls after sullivan had failed five times in succession von der lieth took up the job and managed to get five out of ten tries muthart got six out of thirteen tries lehigh scored first on a foul goal by muthart and a field goal by a k white von der lieth who scored 23 out of brown's 27 points then started his point gaining for brown lehigh managed to keep the lead until the latter part of the first half when brown pulled up and tied the score at 13 all a few seconds before the end of the half muthart pocketed a pretty field goal making the score for the first half lehigh 15 brown 13 jan m e meet postponed to feb with the first meet of the season less than two weeks off the wrest ling team has been working hard and is rapidly nearing a high state of perfection since the christmas vacation stiff practice has taken place daily and strict training ha*s been observed almost any afternoon of the week one can see eight or ten men paired off on the big mat for five minute bouts and this continues for an hour or more other forms of practice consist in bag-punching basketball and boxing and the men endeavoring to reduce their weight spend much of their time skipping rope it is a deplorable fact that the student body can enjoy but one home meet which is with the uni versity wrestling ordinarily the tryouts will occur the wednesday night preceding the meet owing to in terference with the mid-year finals however the trials for the u of p meet will take place tomorrow even ing at eight o'clock the outcome of this trial will determine the se lection of men for the meet satur day night as similar trials will occur before every meet those who do not make a position on the unable to compete 125-lb class — capt st john has no challenge 135-lb class — with four entries this bout will be hotly contested gatch is the most promising but is over weight the other three can didates are fowler 12 miller 12 and woods 15 145-lb class — this will be con tested between birdsall 12 mart 13 and flick 14 these men are evenly matched and some fast work can be expected 158-lb good one continued on fourth page last friday morning immediate ly following the lecture by mr day in the chapel a short but rather important college meeting was held the junior committee which con sists of the president of the junior class the three assistant managers of the major sports viz football baseball and lacrosse and the stu dent head waiter at the commons submitted to the student body rec ommendations to permit a reorgani zation of the committee so as to make it permanent and greatly in crease its field of service this step came in response to the feeling that the junior committee alone could not thoroughly occupy the field offered and the action taken on friday opens the way for the es tablishment of a student bureau of self-help organized on broad lines the object of this bureau will be to assist financially all needy stu dents of the university both ath letic and non-athletic the com mittee proposes to systematize the work thoroughly list all agencies possible and open new sources of revenue to a larger number of men the recommendation of the ju nior committee as endorsed by the student body are as follows we the junior committee rec ommend that this committee be changed to an executive committee which is to control a bureau of self-help the purpose of which shall be to help financially all needy students of the university we the committee believe that the best way in which this can be done would be to put into the hands of said committee with the ath letic director as adviser the power of obtaining and controlling all agencies and distributing the same to deserving men at the discretion of the committee that when the new committee takes charge next year the committee in charge dur ing the present year act as an ad visory committee until thanksgiv ing recess so that the work can be carried on without interruption and that the new men may have time to familiarize themselves with the na ture of the work the details of the organization of the bureau of self-help remain to be worked out by the present ju nior committee and the arcadia we further recommend the es tablishment of a second-hand book store agency to be managed by the junior committee all revenue from which is to be turned into a general fund to be used in defraying the expenses of said committee and to help one or more deserving students who are to assume the duties of buying and selling the books continued on fourth page the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday january 23 1912 no 30 student bureau of self-help wrestling team in good shape "
