chinese students club meets princeton obtained revenge for last year's defeat in wrestling at the hands of the brown and white mat artists by winning four out of the seven bouts last wednesday the entire match was fast and furious ; shown by the fact that the referee had to make but one decision the remaining bouts were decided by falls st john lehigh'sieaptain attempted the difficult taskiff wrest ling in two classes — his own the 125-lb class and the 135-lb class ; gatch the regular man in the latter class being laid up temporarily however a 14-lb haifeicap proved too much for him and h ormond won the bout after seven minutes forty seconds cox in the heavy weight class had no trouble at all in pinning logan's shoulders to the mat in the short time of one minute forty-five seconds bulk arises belt conveyors have been made to han dle anything from garbage to dia monds this flexibility in design is giving them much favor in all sorts of manufacturing plants and therefore they are rapidly supersed ing many former laborious and ex pensive methods the present day development of the conveyor is the result of its pas sage through many stages the first conveyor was of the worm screw type but owing to the limit in length they proved impractica ble the change was then made to the scraper-line which also is very inefficient owing to the considerable amount of friction met with in moving the material and also be tween the moving parts finally the belt conveyor was put into ser vice and has shown a marked im provement over the others the belt for the conveyor is the center of considerable attention and after numerous experiments had been made it was found that the center of the belt always re ceived the hardest wear and in or der to counteract this feature more rubber was added there this then gave the belt a unif orm life through out belt conveying lines have been manufactured of various capacities and sizes they have been made to carry material up to about 50 tons a minute and in length up to nearly 1200 feet then when one of these conveyors is equipped with an automatic dumper it becomes one of the best money saving ma chines on the market after his talk mr baldwin spoke of his fad of saving clippings so that at present he has about 45,000 all systematically filed no lafayette wrestling meet without any doubt the program of the february meeting of the civil engineering society held wednes day evening in drown hall was the most interesting and successful of the year there was present not only a large attendance of the stu dent body but also an encouraging number of the faculty and some others after the routine business had been dispensed with h s black man 13 presented orally a very interesting and complete account of his work during the past summer he told just what factory con struction under scientific manage ment means and then proceeded to apply in detail this theory the underlying principle of the whole system is the keeping tab on each man and his work and the being able to tell just for what purpose each article has been used the roads of a country are ac curate and certain tests of the de gree of its civilization the origi nal roads of the commonwealth of pennsylvania were the indian trails which finally developed and widen ed into the turnpike and mail route mr joseph w hunter first deputy state highway commis sioner of the pennsylvania state highway department was then in troduced and with the aid of lan tern slides gave a most exhaustive and pleasing account of the road laws and roads of pennsylvania about the year 1800 a system of turnpike or toll roads was inau gurated which gradually extended over the whole state until there was a net work of fairly good roads that permitted of travel during the en tire year by reason of the advent of the locomotive there was a loss of traffic over these turnpikes so that they were gradually abandon ed the maintenance of the con demned turnpikes was originally placed upon the townships but un der the provisions of a recent act of assembly the care of these roads has been placed upon the counties that they traverse and it is to be hoped that they will be kept in bet ter condition the state highway department was originally created by the act of general assembly approved april 15 1903 and was reorganized by the act approved may ist 1905 whichiprovided for the payment of the cost of highway improvement by the state county and township in the proportion of seventy-five per centum by the state and twelve and one-half per centum each by the county and township under this system 850 miles of township continued on third page one of the most significant meet ings that the chinese students club of lehigh university has held for some time was its february meet ing which was held on wednesday evening at the home of dr and mrs drinker the fact that the long hoped-for chinese republic was born only two days before this meeting made ching wha the new republic a timely topic for discus sion in business session it was de cided to elect officers of the club annually instead of semi-annually and the constitution was amended accordingly continued on fourth page chimin chu-fuh 13 president of the club explained briefly the turn ing points in the development of china and how the republic with a minimum amount of bloodshed was finally brought about the main number on the program was a pa per by chu-fuh 13 on the chi nese people as seen by the chinese in his talk the speaker dealt with the civilization of the chinese their religions their social life educa tional facilities at home their meth the wrestling meet with lafay ette college which was scheduled for washington's birthday has been cancelled by lafayette the sup port of this sport at lafayette has been so weak that their manager has been obliged to cancel all his dates mustard and cheese a rehearsal for all cast candid.m ; is scheduled for saturday at 2 p m in saucon hall the first call for candidates for the dramatic production of 1912 brought out about thirty men for both cast and chorus it is felt that more than this number are needed to make competition with the view that a superlative cast and chorus may be selected at a recent meet ing of the executive board which was attended by both coaches a show by the title of the kahn of kathan was chosen which is said to seemed to work as hard as usual the snap and vigor which is generally so marked was noticeably lacking it is probable that this is due to the fact that the team may have been overworked of late or over confidence may have been a factor in it the team as a whole was not up to its usual form and experienced some little difficul ty in overcoming the steady defen sive work of the scrubs the line-up able to be in the game again p j white is not back in the game yet but crichton is improving with every practice and fills the place well . swarthmore whom we play next saturday has four old men back
