on tuesday which is univer sity day the ceremonies will again begin with an academic procession from the alumni memorial building to the chap el at 10:45 it is expected that there will be more than one hundred & seventy degrees con instructions for formal exercises all-important details for sunday's and tuesday's ceremonies the alumni memorial building which will be dedicated tomorrow final game of season to be played at formal opening of lehigh field tomorrow lehigh nine to meet maroon team the representation from the class of 81 will probably not out-number that of the fifty year class since 81 is a small class and its members are scat tered at considerable distances from bethlehem j t bourke political editor of the cleve land leader and prominent in political circles throughout the state of ohio has conducted the plans for the 81 reunion and will head the procession of the 4 5-year men the class of 86 will have a con on page 6 col 2 the class of 76 will have a delegation of four men present to this class are attributed many interesting traditions and its members are proud of the important part in lehigh's de velopment that they were in strumental in bringing about for instance the first student publication which appeared at lehigh was known as the le high journal and was started by the members of the class of 76 legend has it that the le high colors brown and white were also designed by the class of 76 prominent in the 76 delegation is colonel william l roeder of scranton well known throughout the anthra cite region as a moving spirit in many public spirited enterpris es and as an orator of excep tional ability and will be celebrating the fif ty-fifth anniversary of his grad uation dr henry sturgis drinker president emeritus of the uni versity will be the only mem ber of the class of 71 present while nearly one thousand alumni are expected on the campus over the week-end the center of the stage will be held by the twelve reunion classes this is the year for the reunion of the classes of the years end ing in i's and 6's 71 76 81 86 etc class of 76 will be guests of honor many coming from distant places to join in class re unions — much activity in store for returning sons large number of grads re turn for alumni festivities price ten cents tickets issued battle expected alumni day tomorrow to be signalized by dedication of alumni memorial building dedication address by major-general summerall — lehigh field to be formally used for first time in baseball game with traditional rivals — achieve ment and athletic cups to be awarded memorial tablets to be unveiled during exercises class day events to be impressive at the fifty-eighth com mencement exercises which will take place from sunday un til tuesday inclusive one of the largest graduating classes in the history of lehigh will re ceive their degrees the ex ercises will be formally opened with an academic procession from the alumni memorial building to the packer mem orial chapel on sunday morn ing at 10:45 the baccalau reate sermon will be delivered by the rt rev james edward freeman bishop of washing ton in the afternoon there will be an informal gathering in the faculty room of the alumni building where the students and their parents will have the opportunity to meet the mem bers of the faculty and their wives in addition this affair will enable the students and visitors to enjoy the exhibition of paintings on display in this room this exhibition includes works of many of the best known artists of the present day and was made possible thru the efforts of mr emil gel haar formerly of the faculty of lehigh and mr howard leach librarian on monday afternoon the class day exercises will take place on the campus at 8:00 that evening the president of the university will hold a for mal reception for the members lehigh wins year's score vs.lafayette last gathering of 1926 on monday afternoon — prior memorial to be dedicated eastonians capture football and cross-country — beaten badly in other sports gate unveiled truce declared tomorrow will witness the reunion of lehigh's old grads in the greatest of all alumni festivities — alumni day this is the day in the college year which is set apart for the ex clusive use of the alumni as a body when they may meet in their respective class groups and review their undergradu ate days on old south moun tain talk over the events of the intervening years and apply their experience to the prob lems of their alma mater the size of the alumni reunions has grown with the growth of le high and this year's event promises to be the biggest and best in the college history in keeping with the factjthat ing ceremonies will be opened with the singing of the first part of the memorial ode mother lehigh by the choir the memorial tablet will then be unveiled by walter raleigh okeson 96 secretary of the alumni association and the choir will sing the second part of the memorial ode the pledge the names of the men who died in their country's ser vice will then be read by cad wallader evans 01 president of the alumni association taps will be sounded as a requiem to the loyal sons of lehigh who have joined their nation's honored dead the third part of the memorial ode con on page 6 col 7 swordandcrescent elect new members new award to be granted to senior beta theta pi attainment cup to become highest under graduate honor fifteen juniors most prom inent in lehigh activities pledged by honorary on monday afternoon the class of 1926 will hold their last class function as under graduates the class day ex ercises of the graduating sen iors will begin with the assem bly at drown hall at two o'clock the seniors will wear their academic caps and gowns and carry the traditional long clay pipes which have been part of every lehigh class day affair the exercises will be opened with the march to the platform erected by the flagpole below packer hall the march will be led by the con on page 6 col 6 con on page 2 col 3 football has long been rec ognized as the peer of all col lege sports and in lehigh a vic tory over lafayette on the grid iron is recognized as the peak of athletic perfection and super iority of the brown and white over its ancient rival and such a year is termed a lehigh year in sports this year la fayette won the coveted game after lehigh had made the gamest fight against odds that a crippled team ever made but after consulting the athletic records of the dual lafayette lehigh meets of the year it is more than justifiable that the award of superiority should be granted to the brown and alumni day will likely see the largest number of returning le high men in its history the cel ebration this year will be mark ed with two of the most impor tant steps that the university has ever taken in the line of further development on sat urday morning the alumni memorial building monument to the loyalty of lehigh's sons in the hour of their country's need will be formally dedicat ed and presented to the uni versity by the alumni associa tion saturday afternoon will witness the first official use of the newly acquired athletic field formerly the bethlehem steel co field which lehigh has recently purchased this new area of sport will also be appropriately dedicated with impressive ceremonies at 1 1 : 30 the meeting will adjourn to the memorial hall of the building and the unveil the program saturday morn ing will open with the annual alumni meeting in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building at this meeting the building will be formally pre sented to the university by the alumni the presentation ad dress will be made by william carter dickerman 96 for the alumni the speech of accep tance on behalf of the board of chaplain the speakers and recipients of honorary degrees will assem ble in the office of the presi dent in the memorial build ing 2 heads of curricula the di rector of students health service librarian and pro fessors will assemble 4n the faculty assembly room in the memorial building 3 associate professors and as sistant professors will assem ble in the large north alcove on main floor on east side of memorial building 4 instructors and assistants will assemble in the large south alcove on main floor on east side of memorial building 5 candidates for degrees taken in course will assemble at the flagpole 6 full academic costume will be worn in the customary and prescribed manner by all members of the faculty and candidates for degrees those in academic costume will re main covered at all times ex cept during prayer the faculty assembly room on the north side of the main floor of the memor ial building will be available as a hat and coat room pre ceeding the procession c band 1 the band will take position in front of the flagpole fac ing north and play appro priate march music during the procession at the con clusion of the ceremony the band will again take position in the vicinity of and facing the flagpole and at the di con on page 5 col 1 a recent worthwhile addition has been made to the ambitious heights toward which lehigh men of the future may aspire and for which they may work — the beta theta pi attainment cup and medal the cup with its accompanying medal has been donated to the lehigh chapter of beta theta pi by william paul starkey 00 to be award ed oh alumni day each year to the member of the graduating class who has accomplished the most in every line of under graduate work during his four years of college life the name con on page 6 col 6 ' the lafayette baseball nine has been secured for the dedi cation game for lehigh field to be played immediately after the dedication ceremonies on saturday afternoon though lehigh has twice downed the maroon in the annual series it was thought that a lafayette team would be the one to in still the greatest enthusiasm in the returning alumni while lafayette has scored only med iocre success on the diamond this year they have shown great improvement in the last games played by defeating muhlen berg and rutgers like lehigh they experienced real difficulty in starting off the season but both teams have progressed so remarkably that this final bat tle should be the most strenu ous diamond duel of the rivals this season at the beginning of the sea son coach jing johnson had a difficult task on hand to mould a good team out of the men available especially wa3 the pitching staff weak but by strenuous efforts his labors have transformed the team in to a winning combination es pecially on the southern trip did johnson work exceedingly hard even donning a uniform and pitching to warm up the batters to save his pitchers ! the southern trip came be fore the varsity was rounded into shape with the result that princeton north carolina and virginia all claimed victories during the trip however with the opening of the home season the nine settled down somewhat and administered lop-sided de feats to dickinson and ursinus by scores of 9 i and 11-1 re spectively muhlenberg with a well rounded team then pro ceeded to humble the varsity with an 11-2 defeat on the following week rut gers proved no opposition and a 15-5 score was chalked up against them then came villa nova with the best collegiate con on page 2 col 5 at the last college meeting held on tuesday may 25 the sword and crescent society senior honorary society held its annual tap day it is their an nual custom in the spring to invite the fifteen men from the junior class who rank highest in college activities to become members of the honorary body the men are selected on an es tablished point basis for all rec ognized activities the pur pose of the society is to pro mote college spirit and to give its support
