outfielders — driscoll re bert shaw hill kurtz and sindel crichton played the initial sack for two seasons at bethlehem prep while hill has substituted in the same position here at the universi ty for the same period captain mac hardy covered second bag in every game last year while evans played second for this year's fresh man team olson covered the short field for the varsity two years ago but was unable to appear as a can didate last season mccaffrey had a splendid record at wesleyan and galloway martin howard and mc menamin are all former squad men of the candidates for the outfield driscoll is a member of last year's team and rebert from the 1910 varsity shaw hill kurtz and sindel have all either played in inter-class games or been on the squad in former years the following men members of last year's varsity are lost to this year's team : fisher borden shel lenberger kempsmith sterling and rose with rebert and olson back in the game however together with captain mac hardy bell driscoll and gatch the outlook is not by any means discouraging it is not yet known who will offi ciate on the home grounds this year although fidler who umpired satis factorily last season can doubtless continued on fourth page dr r w hall of the depart ment of biology gave a highly in teresting talk on the mechanism of heredity before the arts and sci ence club at their regular monthly meeting on thursday night dr hall illustrated his lecture with a series of charts heredity said dr hall in part is vastly more important than environment since the latter merely puts on the finish ing touches to the character already shaped by heredity in the pre-natal state he spoke at length on the development of the egg and its di vision the division of the sperm and fertilization preceding dr hall a short paper was read by colling 12 on the life of joseph lister the father of the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday march 5 1912 bright prospects for baseball vol xix wrestlers lose to penn state no 38 basketball season closes with brilliant victory from locals bellefonte team wins five bouts than in recent years good material more plentiful lehigh wins a spectacular game from swarthmore in the last minute of play by the score of 29-28 cole in the last two minutes de cided the game in lehigh's favor for lehigh muthart must be giv en perhaps the greatest share of credit for the victory besides his three goals from the floor made from angles and positions which electri fied the crowd he was unusually consistent in throwing goals from fouls ten out of thirteen in the sec ond half and fifteen out of twenty four during the entire game all the other members of the team play ed with all there was in them and deserved to close the season with as great a victory for swarthmore no particular star can be picked out as all their men played a hard and aggressive game gieg probably being the most spectacular gilchrist's throwing of goals from fouls while not equal to some of his previous performances was still very good seven out of ten in the first half and twelve out of eighteen during the entire game the line-up : — lehigh swarthmore p j white ..... f mitchell crichton f baker muthart c gilchrist cole g . smith capt cook capt . . g gieg goals from floor — muthart 3 crichton2 cole 1 cook 1 ; gilchrist 3 gieg 2 mitchell 1 baker 1 smith 1 goals from fouls — muthart 15 out of 24 gilchrist 12 out of 18 referee — mitchell allentown y m c a time-keepers — biddle swarthmore kerbaugh lehigh time of halves — twenty minutes swarthmore's fast basketball team met its first defeat of the season on saturday evening at the hands of the brown and white by a score of 29 to 28 after it had beaten many of the best teams of the east among them the army the navy and pennsylvania the game was one of the fastest played on lehigh's floor in several years and only the most aggressive kind of work in the second half enabled lehigh to come out ahead by the narrow margin of one point the pace set was fast and furious from the start and abounded in thrilling shots which brought the large crowd to its feet again and again and kept it in sus pense until the final whistle blew swarthmore started in with a rush and long and spectacular shots by mitchell baker and gieg coupled with gilchrist's exceptional ability in throwing goals from fouls gave swarthmore a lead which they main tained until the end of the first half when the score was 17 to 11 in fa vor of the garnet and white in this period lehigh's guarding was far from close enough and her for wards appeared unable to locate the basket successfully three field goals only being made in the second half lehigh show ed a reversal of form and started in with a determination to reduce swarthmore's lead and pretty goals by muthart and crichton and the former's accurate goals from fouls put the brown and white a point to the good in the last few min utes of play swarthmore forged ahead again but a pretty goal by arts and science modern surgery lister died on the 11th of this month so that the paper was particularly apropos following the talks an interest ing discussion on heredity was led by profs hall and hughes and mr walters an appetizing feed then claimed attention and the meeting adjourned at a late hour the at tendance was very fair baseball candidates at bellefonte last saturday night the strong perm state wrestling team triumphed over the brown and white mat-artists in one of the hardest-fought contests of the sea son before a crowd of a thousand spectators the lehigh wrestling team gracefully met defeat after putting up one of the stiffest fights of the year in this respect the le high grapplers made a far better showing against a team that is con sidered to be about the best in the country than did any team on perm state's schedule this year in the 115-lb class herr of le high did some fast and aggressive work and after wrestling the regu lar nine minutes and an extra three minute period was given the deci sion over jones of state in collender of state captain st john met a worthy opponent in the 125-lb class collender was particularly clever on the defence and two extra three-minute periods only resulted in a draw in the 135-lb class gatch of le high although in a rather poor con dition since the navy meet put up a splendid fight after nine min utes of fast wrestling without a fall the bout was awarded to fulkman the first fall of the meet came in the 145-lb class when shollenber ger of state threw mart of le high in eight minutes twenty-two seconds with a half-nelson in the 158-lb class edwards of lehigh against very state's foot ball captain put up the pluckiest scrap of the evening although out weighed by more than ten pounds edwards made a splendid fight after having his elbow dis located a short time before time was called he returned to the mat and finished the bout the decision was given to very no doubt the most spectacular bout of the evening occurred be tween captain lesh of state and watson of lehigh in the 175-lb class several times during the bout captain lesh secured a leg and chancery hold only to be broken each time after nine minutes with neither gaining a fall the bout was awarded to captain lesh in the heavy-weight class cox of lehigh met his first defeat at the hands of lamb the bout was extremely close both men being of about the same weight but lamb finally secured a fall on a half nelson the summary : — 115-lb class — herr of lehigh defeated jones of state in 12 min utes decision
