with the first game less than two weeks off lacrosse practice has tak en on a vigorous turn the sched ule opens with the easter trip com prising navy on april 4th and mt washington on april 6th up until the past week practice has been confined largely to the cage but with the present moderate weather outdoor work is possible scrimmage will take place daily un til the navy game owing to the muddy condition of the field the scrimmage wednesday afternoon was confined to the lower end two half teams were chosen which constituted the offense and defense of each team the follow ing men participated : kennedy f r speed wheaton hart williams raynor carson f b speed jay martin hartdegen schulz packard st john gifford and carpenter up to the present time a fixed varsity team has not been chosen but from the preceding list and the wealth of substitute material at hand coach grimes should be able to select a winning team the completed schedule is as fol lows april 4 — navy at annapolis april 6 — mt washington club at mt washington april 13 — baltimore city college at home april 17 — indians at home april 20 — new york lacrosse club at home april 27 — swarthmore at swarthmore may 4 — stevens at home may 11 — johns hcfpkins at home important college meeting next friday in losing to cornell on march the ninth lehigh's wrestling team clos ed a somewhat unsuccessful but in no way discreditable season the brown and white team won but one out of five meets ; yet these five meets were with colleges all of greater athletic resources and noth ing but credit can be attached to the spirited way in which lehigh's mat men entered every meet the season opened on february third with a decisive victory over pennsylvania a week later the wrestling team increased the respect with which princeton must regard lehigh after this college year in losing a very clos y-contested meet by a narrow margin it is interesting to note in this connection that pennsylvania a short time later tied princeton showing that the three teams must have been closely matched in the last three meets of the sea son with the navy perm state and cornell respectively lehigh was fairly beaten though not with out that stubborn resistance for which the brown and white's ath letes are noted the perm state meet was unusually spectacular and hard-fought it must be remem bered too that these three colleges had the three best wrestling teams ! of the east for the past season cor nell winning every meet the following are the scores of the five meets : univ of perm . . 2y 2 , lehigh ay 2 princeton 4 , lehigh 3 navy ...'. 6 , lehigh 1 perm state 5l5 l / 2 , lehigh v 2 cornell 5 , lehigh 2 opponents 23 , lehigh 12 the members of the brown and white team deserve great credit for the spirit with which they worked even in the face of defeat capt st john was the most successful point-winner with herr and cox next in order y m c a george herr who has been elect ed captain of next year's team has worked hard during the past season and will no doubt prove an able and energetic leader next friday morning at 1 1 o'clock in packer hall will be held an im portant college meeting at this time will be elected the assistant managers for next year of three sports — basketball wrestling and gym the question of supporting mr hayes in his work in the orient will also be taken up at this time it is the duty of every undergrad uate to be present at this meeting notice ! the number of candidates for as sistant manager of lacrosse has been extremely small it is impor tant that more men come out for this position and all candidates should report to the manager at once chimin chu-fuh will give under the direction of the y m c a on sunday evening a talk on the chinese view-point it is to be a general talk on the attitude of the chinese toward the religious and social civilization brought into chi na by foreigners no one is more fitted to talk on this subject than chu-fuh himself the members of the mining so ciety were entertained at the home of dr and mrs drinker on wed nesday evening at 8.00 o'clock and a sociable evening was spent in hear ing interesting talks on the present coal troubles and the situations in mexico and japan h h otto the first speaker in troduced discussed as his subject economical conditions in anthra cite mining in which he gave a brief outline of the incidents that occurred from the great coal strike in 1902 to the present day situation in the anthracite regions and dwelt at length on the causes from the view-points of both the miners and operators of the threatening outlook here in pennsylvania professor eckfeldt was then call ed upon for an impromptu speech and fell back upon his favorite sub ject mexico he gave a long description of the facilities which existed in that country ; the forest ry outlooks railroad conditions and irrigation and filtering systems ac cording to the professor the people of mexico are not hostile to the av erage foreigner but to those who in acquiring domination in an industry regulate matters for their own in terests to the exclusion of the mexi can foreigners who dwell peace ably in the country are as safe from bodily harm as in their native land professor eckfeldt finally obtained his seat after numerous attempts on the part of his audience to keep him going continued on third page owing to the absence of profes sor richards who was scheduled to speak on japan dr drinker was called upon to give a few remarks on the same subject having an interest himself in coal matters dr drinker reviewed a small part of his life when he was associated with a large coal company at that time coal was mined by numerous small operators who shipped their output of coal to the market at their own expense later the shipment of coal was turned over to certain large companies who paid the small oper ators a certain percentage of the profit realized on its sale dr drinker then turned to japan and related his experiences in investiga ting the mining prospects of this nation these he said are rapidly developing and as in three other great industries are gradually ap proaching a monopoly he then gave an amusing account of his ac quaintance with an arabian sultan and concluded his talk with the ex cellent advice that the best way to obtain recognition is to write upon the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa friday march 22 1912 lacrosse practice on wednesday a letter from the orient no 43 lehigh's wrestl ing season vol xix mining society meets mage on field candidates put through scrim from sultan of lahej communication to dr drinker at their home guests of dr and mrs drinker extremely hard meets during past winter it will be remembered that in our issue of january 23rd we published a letter from dr drinker written on the red sea and giving an ac count of the voyage from bombay to aden in which we gave the por trait of sultan sir ahmad fadthl the sultan of lahej who was a fel low voyager with dr drinker and his party dr drinker forwarded to sultan fadthl some copies of the brown and white contain ing this article and the picture of the sultan and also one of the large university photogravures of the campus and some of our univer sity literature dr drinker has just received the following acknowledg ment from the sultan major general sir james bell referred to in this letter is the governor of aden the oceana the p o vessel referred to is the vessel that was sunk last week in a collision on her outward voyage from england to india lahej february 12 my dear doctor henry s drinker president lehigh university with much pleasure i write this to acknowledge the receipt of your kind letter dated 23rd january last and to thank you sincerely for your letter in the university papers con cerning myself copies of which you have been good enough to send me with your above letter and through major-general sir james bell i have not however just yet receiv ed the other pictures of the lehigh university c but i suppose they will come in due course further i always cherish the very pleasant voyage i have had with you and your good family on board the oceana i hope you are all keep ing well and that you will please remember me to your wife and two daughters i am yours sincerely l or i c ahmad fadthl sultan of lahej
