to-morrow afternoon will see the opening of the conference on conservation of school children which will be held under the aus pices of the american academy of medicine in drown memorial hall the conference will be divided in to four sessions the first of which will take place at the time stated above the first session will be devoted to a discussion of deficient and backward children under this head papers will be read on the following topics : remediable con ditions in the feeble-minded and backwards sterilization and seg regation how to secure state appropriations for the proper care of the feeble-minded and how far shall the public school system care for the feeble-minded at the second session which will take place at 7.30 o'clock to-morrow conservation of school children will be discussed the third ses sion will be held at 9 o'clock thurs day morning and teaching hy giene will be the subject under dis cussion what should be taught how should hygiene be taught ?"" teaching hygiene for better par entage and indirect methods of teaching hygiene will be the top ics of papers to be read at the final session which will be held at 2 o'clock thursday afternoon and which will be devoted to medical inspection the following subjects will be discussed : medical inspec tion of schools measures for prevention of respiratory infection in the schools and the relative advantages of school lunches in elementary and secondary schools the presiding officers of the four sessions in the order named will be : alexander r craig a m m d president of the american acad emy of medicine dr h s drinker rev paul deschweinitz d d and samuel g dixon m d l l d harrisburg commissioner of health of pennsylvania dr w l estes director of st luke's hospital is a member of the executive committee of which chas mclntire of easton is chair man mr mclntire is secretary and treasurer of the american acad emy of medicine the local com mittee consists of dr drinker vice president emery and dr w l estes the arts and science club held its march meeting in saucon hall last thursday evening president colling presided over a short busi ness meeting in which it was de cided to decrease the dues from two dollars to fifty cents in an ef fort to increase the membership of the club the first paper of the evening was read by sanderson 14 on the life of robert boyle he sketched briefly but comprehensively the events and achievements pf this great englishman — natural philos opher chemist and physicist prof franklin then read his re markable paper on bill's school and mine this paper is a com parison of the education in the broadest sense of the word of the children brought up in a country school forty years ago and those reared under the intense pressure of modern city life long study of the situation has well equipped prof franklin to write on this subject aside from its serious purpose the paper is well written ; and to hear its kind ly but mildly satirical humor read by prof franklin in his own in imitable way was a treat to all who were present my school was the environ ment of the writer's boyhood — the country farm where boys work play and study in proportionate amounts and grow up strong and clear and clean-minded bill's school is the modern city bill learns more book knowledge but his view of life is distorted in asmuch as his education is ill-pro portioned the crowded conditions and in tense industrialism of our land give rise to a pollution of stream and atmosphere that is only too analo gous to changed spirit in the minds of the up-growing generation too many boys and girls are allow ed to grow up without doing any work bill studies perforce but he doesn't work and he has no place to play at the conclusion of his paper prof franklin entered into a dis cussion of its points after which the meeting adjourned the movement toward establish ing playgrounds in our cities is most commendable the land of out of doors is the best school for chil dren and the greatest asylum for older people playgrounds are the cheapest and often the best schools the calculus cremation commit tee offers prizes of 3 2 and 1 for the best songs for the calculus to oxford furnace were entertained at lun cheon by the empire iron and steel co at the invitation of president peckitt g w ham 09 was in town last week the freshman class held its in itial banquet on thursday evening at the eagle hotel in bethlehem and it was a decided success the attendance was large there being present 102 men the class was fa vored by having with them the fol lowing guests dr drinker prof reiter mr walters v b edwards 12 c r wylie 13 w r . j dugan 13 w f bailey 14 the menus were in fit keeping with the occasion they consisted of the menu proper with a leather binding on which was stamped the lehigh seal needless to mention the scores of the founder's day sports obtained a prominent posi tion menu oyster cocktail puree a la de pois au dubug escalloped white fish a l'ltalienne pommes de terre au chips prime olives crisp celery filet de boeuf larded au queen buttered beets roast young capon stuffed giblet gravy cranberry sauce mashed potatoes green string beans steamed rice rum punch eagle hotel salad en mayonnaise pineapple cheese water wafers bisque ice cream assorted cakes cafe noir toastmaster h.a.crichton pres ident of the class after a few well chosen remarks called upon dr drinker to speak dr drinker res ponded as only he is able and talk ed at length on college spirit he charged the men with the responsi bility that is about to be placed on the class of 15 and urged that ev ery man get in close touch with him he concluded by saying that we should treat our athletic rivals as guests and ever strive to uphold lehigh's reputation of being the hospitable college mr walters of the english de partment after being elected an honorary member of the class sug gested ways in which the men of 1915 both as a class and as indi viduals may do their share toward the advancement of lehigh he urged the substitution of some form of contest like a tug-of-war for the present night rush between the sophomores and freshmen to the men as individuals mr walters pointed out concrete ways to do honor to their college lehigh men should sink themselves he said in service to their alma mater prof reiter spoke of the new athletic movement and urged the men project of affording finan cial backing to c d hayes 05 who is engaged in china in y m c a both educational and religi ous dr drinker was present and in a short address presented the facts clearly and concisely he enumerated the work mr hayes has been doing past and present and outlined briefly what the represen tatives of other american colleges and universities are doing in china chu-fuh followed dr drinker and shed considerable light upon the condition of affairs in china relat ing the infinite benefit derived from the work of college men there e e yake and h h otto expressed their views upon the subject and laid particular emphasis upon the point that the movement was not a new one but was one that several colleges had been pushing for some time cards were passed out and collected to determine how willing ly the student-body would back the movement and how deeply its senti ment was behind it with that idea that should the backing be suffi ciently great the idea be extended to the alumni a proposition for reviving the le high burr which has been extinct for five years was thoroughly dis cussed but no action was taken in the matter it was decided to make cheer leading competitive in order to secure the best men in college for this activity the elections of the assistant managers of the basketball and wrestling teams were held e b snyder and h w graham res pectively were elected to the two positions results of investigation the brown and white the committee in charge of so liciting backing for c d hayes 05 reports that 260 was subscrib ed at the college meeting on friday a campaign to increase this will be carried on among the student-body faculty and alumni geology trip
