races in every event are anticipated upper field on friday and saturday new members were also admitted at recent meet ing of combined clubs chi chapter honorary fraternity for electrical engineers es tablished tonight rivals have one apiece de gray is pres twelve undergraduates re ceive coveted bent for scholarship three speakers preparing for the final and crucial game of the season coach johnson has been put ting the members of the brown and white ball team through a week of strenuous practicing the improvement evident in the squad after this series of gruelling workouts indicates that the lehigh nine is in a po sition to acquit itself commend ably when the third and decid ing game 6f the trio with la fayette is played tomorrow af ternoon in easton especially lege new york university rutgers university swarth more college union college and washington college there are more teams with even chances for the title this year than ever in the history of the association and it will not be surprising if several rec ords are bettered swarthmore last year's champion will make a strong bid to hold its title but will meet strong competi tion from its arch rival hav erford and from n y u le con on page 4 col 1 track and soccer schedules made deutscher verein elects officers annual pilgrimage to doylestown colonial mu seum is made triangular meet in track arranged with rutgers and lafayette the keenest competition in years is anticipated whe,n the track and field athletes of six teen colleges and universities that are members of the middle atlantic states collegiate asso ciation meet in the annual championships of this associa tion on may 21 and 22 the meet will be held at bethlehem pa with lehigh university acting as host to the 300 or more competing athletes this will mark the 1 4th champion ship meet of this associa tion of colleges the first meet being held in 1913 the colleges competing for this title are the smaller and middle sized institutions of this region including colleges from new york pennsylvania new jersey delaware and mary land the complete list con sists of alfred university un iversity of delaware dickinson college drexel institute franklin and marshall college gettysburg college haverford college johns-hopkins univer sity lafayette college lehigh university muhlenberg col a new honorary fraternity will be installed upon lehigh's campus when the chi chapter of eta kappa nu national electrical engineering frater nity is formally admitted at lehigh this evening this fraternity was founded in 1904 at the university of illinois and already has twen ty chapters lehigh's being the twenty-first the purpose of the organization is for secur ing mutual benefit to men of proven ability n s hibsch man a member of the teaching force in the electrical depart ment and himself a member of eta kappa nu having been elected while a student at state college was instrumental in having a chapter established on the local campus the installation ceremony will take place this evening in the hotel bethlehem tomor row evening a banquet will be held at the same place at which time the charter members and those pledged at a recent meet con on page 4 col 7 oxford system is subject of talk the spirit among the players has shown increased life since the smashing victory of last saturday they seem confident that they can win they seem determined to win not as indi viduals however striving to garner to themselves the glory of this desired victory but as a lehigh team working togeth er and for a common end the spirit is excellent judged upon the records of the season to date the lehigh team should be slightly favor ed to win because its comeback saturday was decided and its season has been a bit more sat isfactory than that of lafay ette but the number of er rors in the last game showed how possible it could be for a victory to be tossed away not withstanding heavy hitting and first-class mound work coach johnson has endeavored to round up his players so that they will make a more accept able appearance in the field in this last game which may after all be determined by the con on page 4 col 4 prof weida gives three lectures society hears two excellent talks dr carothers tells about historic institution at beaux arts meet mining and metallurgical society told about mining methods is a graduate some members of math department will not return in fall officers elected the members of deutscher verein held their last meeting of the year at doylestown this is an annual affair and invar iably proves to be an occasion of great interest to the mem bers following the banquet which was served at the doylestown hotel the museum was in spected this museum is maintained by the bucks coun ty historical society and con tains one of the finest and most valuable collections of colonial implements now in existance much of interest was discov ered by the members who were able to note the characteristics of the american settlers by the types of tools which they used most of these implements show ing the kind to which the set tlers had been accustomed be con on page 4 col 7 the regular meeting of the board of control of athletics held in drown hall last mon day afternoon determined those candidates for assistant man agerships in spring sports which have yet to be checked for scholarship before official publication of the names can be made a recommendation was read two schedules were approv ed in track and soccer the schedule for soccer next year will be temple haverford cornell army n y u navy swarthmore lafayette that of track intra-mural union dickinson princeton and a tri angular meet with lafayette and rutgers at rutgers there is still an open date in this sport which will be filled short ly con on page 4 col 6 lehigh frosh win from muhlenberg scabbard & blade admits members the combined musical clubs of lehigh organized for next year at a meeting held wednes day evening reports from present officers showing the clubs to be in better condition than at any previous time in their history were received richard j degray was elect ed president for next year m l eckstein was chosen busi ness manager without opposi tion w s rappold and g m simes were selected as assis tant business managers c a alter was elected secretary and publicity manager the latter being a newly created office dr horace w wright head of the latin department was re elected faculty advisor definite plans for next year were not made but a general discussion was engaged in in an effort to decide what char acter next season's program should take it is likely if the ideas brought out during the meeting are followed that next year instead of a formal con cert the annual entertainment will tend more toward the char acter of a musical play which is considered as being more at tractive to the student body the college sing which was started this year pushed primarily by fred trafford with directed toward the new members but added advice which he urged the graduating members to heed carefully as they faced the tomorrow dr bradley stoughton an honorary member of the le high chapter and dr j s long a student member of the alpha chapter were other speakers who followed dr richards in exhorting the sen iors to continue their life work in the same commendable fash ion in which they have at organization meeting science research club hears dr bennett nutting ketteref and martin dale to be officers next year a mathematician's conception of truth is subject of interesting address at a meeting of the beaux arts society last monday eve ning dr neil carothers spoke on the oxford system in his lecture he stressed the mag nitude of the oxford policy in that every field of learning was open to the student and was ex tensively searched by him according to dr carothers there has been a most interest ing dispute between three of the oxford colleges as to which is the oldest the most authen tic records available however show the date of the founding of the oldest to be in 1 292 two hundred years before colum bus discovered america oxford and cambridge are both similarly organized and are almost exact counterparts afrto size this organization is of a duplex character in that the student first matriculates under the university as a cor porate body and then identifies himself with one of the twenty two colleg-es under the t)xford organization after making his decision and signing up with the college of his choice the student will then do all his work under tute lege in that one college he con on page 2 col 4 the science research club of lehigh university held its last meeting of the year mon wednesday evening may 12 at the maples the meeting was opened at 7 o'clock with dr elias klein presiding the members of the club rotate in order in the presiding dr klein will be the speaker at the first meeting of the science re search club held next fall and the member presiding at that meeting will be the speaker at the next meeting and so on un til all the members have pre sided and spoken the mem bership of the club includes nine professors and instruc tors from the departments of physics arid mathematics who con on page 2 col 4 the lehigh freshman base l>all team succeeded in annex ing its first regular victory of the season by defeating the muhlenberg frosh by the close score of thirteen to twelve the game proved to be a slugfest for both teams only one play er on the two teams failed to score a hit the errors on the part of the lehigh players forced them to fight to the last inning for vic tory their lack of unity was apparent throughout the entire game almost resulting in their defeat this game although loosely played proved to be the first one in which the lehigh frosh displayed their powers to hit the victory over muhlenberg should install more confidence in the players before next sat urday's game muhlenberg de feated lafayette earlier in the con on page 2 col 3 the mining and metallurgi cal society held its final meeting of the year on wednesday eve ning following an interesting discourse election of officers for the 1926-27 year took place after a brief introduction by president white messrs haight and style of the new jersey zinc co began what proved to be a most novel yet educative explanation of their chosen topic both of the speakers have been connected with the franklin furnace n j company for a number of years and are expert mining engineers the lecture was illustrated by diagrams showing the sec tionized views of the mines the two methods of mining prevalent at this time were explained by the use of chalk drawings the present day methods are the first the transverse stroke method and second the top-slicing method the latter is chiefly used wherever possible for it is more successful in that the full weight of the fill is not support ed in the election of officers a tie vote took place between nut ting and otty for the presiden cy and between new and rich ards for the treasurership a toss of the coin favored nut ting for his position and rich ards for treasurer the com plete final election results were con the annual spring initiation ceremony of the scabbard and blade society honorary mili tary organization was held last monday evening in the new armory this was the first military function held in the old commons building which has now been so altered as to provide an excellent armory for the lehigh r o t c unit con on page 2 col 5 after spending several weeks in renovations the carpenters have turned the old dining hall into a drill room large enough to permit the drilling of an en tire platoon it is expected that this acquisition will enable the military department to conduct drills under arms the year around thereby gaining a de cided advantage in formation work the rudiments of the science will be developed more painstakingly since more time will be available for teaching the new members the various prof f m weida delivered the first of a series of three lec tures before the lehigh mathe matical club recently the lec tures are an exposition and ex planation of the presidential ad dress of dr h l reese presi dent of the mathematical as sociation of america delivered in cleveland last year the subject of the speech was the applications of the calculus to actuarial science the second of the series was delivered on thursday morning dr a a bennett the head of the mathematics depart ment announced some import ant changes in the department several of the present mem bers are leaving the university having secured positions else where involving conspicuous promotion dr taylor who has been here only one year goes to the university of wis consin next year at a marked increase in salary and rank mr g a lyle who has been teach ing several years at lehigh in the capacity of instructor has accepted a position as adjunct professor at the recently insti tuted state college in
