bethlehem pa tuesday june 11 1912 graduating class 1912 baccalaureate sermon bishop ethelbert talbot of bethlehem delivers sermon to the graduating class music lovers from far and near attend the renditions revival of bach festival trial of mathematical demon well attended cremation of king calculus the rt rev ethelbert talbot bishop of central pennsylvania de livered an interesting and instruct ive baccalaureate sermon to the graduates and their friends in the packer memorial chapel sunday morning he chose his text from st john 6 : 68 — lord to whom shall we go ? thou hast the words of eternal life after reviewing his text histori cally the bishop said in part : as we look around us to-day and see what is being accomplished in the realm of science and industry in commerce and in politics any right ly constituted man desires to have his share in the achievements of the age most naturally we hope that when our own part in life has been enacted whether twenty or thirty or forty years hence some net result real and tangible may stand to our credit in the great open book of recorded deeds continued on third page several thousand people witness ed the trial and execution of king calculus on the campus last friday evening the sworn enemy of the sophomore class was tried and con victed on the lawn in front of pack er hall ; he was burnt at the stake on the grassy slope between will iams hall and the physics labora tory amidst the cheers of the on looking thousands the plot in the court scene was well arranged and followed the gen eral character of the cremation of last year every part was well car ried out and highly amusing were some of the excellent impersona tions of some of the favorite pro fessors of the department of math ematics after his conviction king cal culus was placed on an accumula a man's salvation among his fel low-men is accomplished by what he does and not by what he profes ses to make our work really count in the final reckoning it must have a worthy motive as well as a note of efficiency the very splendor of the modern world's achievements makes it liable to forget this necessity men are tempted to become so ab sorbed in the doing of things that they lose their sense of motive and direction the man of faith is the man who shapes his course by the stars rath er than by the current and who looks at the stars oftenest when the current runs swiftest small-minded men regard faith as a theory large-minded men use it as a practical working power to get things done and done rightly and here is the deep and eternal continued on fourth page bethlehem gained a high reputa tion in the past from the wonder fully able annual renditions of bach's music by the choir gathered and drilled by dr j fred wolle at that time organist in the univer sity chapel the last of these festivals was held in the old moravian church in bethlehem in june 1905 dr wolle accepted in that year a call to the choir of music at the university of california and during his abs ence no effort was made to carry on the bach choir work on his return east — last year — friends of music in the bethlehems finding that dr wolle was ready and desirous to reinstitute the bach festivals took the matter up and at their and dr wolle's request the university authorities placed the continued on fourth page the brown and white lehigh university no 61 vol xix
