dr drinker announces many changes in the faculty the initial college meeting of the year was held in packer hall last friday morning the meeting was opened by the singing of the alma mater and then president lowry announced doctor drinker as the first speaker the latter welcomed the freshman class to lehigh and explained to them the control of the university by the alumni coach reiter was next introduced to the assembled undergraduates for the first time his appearance was the signal for a noisy and prolonged burst of enthusiasm that served to show him how welcome he is to the college in a ringing and enthusias tic speech the new coach made a call for candidates and asked the support of the undergraduate body in defeat as well as in victory manager baumgartner made a call for candidates for the position of assistant manager of the foot ball team all candidates must be members of the sophomore class and must report to baumgartner before the first game of the season on wednesday the following cheer leaders were appointed j h dillon j r dawson a c morris j it slate e a buckley will have charge of all singing the hustling com mittee was announced as follows j l becker chairman j m bley 11 f s borden 11 r f crump 11 o l graham 11 c f lincoln 11 j a rose 11 g f wood 11 e w cook 12 j a hart 12 w j maguire 12 r campbell 13 j l clarke 13 a e olson 13 the advisability of holding the founder's day hop was discussed and it was decided to refer the question to the arcadia for final settlement after the college meeting a short meeting of the junior class was called by pres maguire and at the same time pres lowry addressed the freshmen in the rear of the room upon the honor system which is in vogue at lehigh at the opening exercises of the moravian seminary and college for young women last wednes day when that institution started upon its 170 th year dr it s drinker made a short address among the most notable events which will occur during the college year upon which lehigh has just entered will be the opening of the two new laboratories for actual work the john fritz engineering laboratory will soon have all its machinery in place the equipment is largely on the way ; some of it is now being received and already some of the machines are in place and are in working condition not ably among the latter is the 800,000 lb vertical screw machine the largest of its kind in the world and capable of testing columns in com pression 25 feet long or less as well as tension members of about 20 feet length or less this ma chine is also capable of bending full size i beams or plate girders three 50,000 lb testing machines and a 30,000 lb wire testing ma chine and several small cement test ing machines have already been re ceived and are in place the 300 000 lb universal machine is expect ed this week when the 800,000 lb machine above mentioned was tested in au gust a steel bar three and one-half inches in diameter was broken in tension under a load of 580,000 lbs the lighting equipment is now being installed and consists of four flaming arc lights of the newest pat tern together with many incandes cent tungsten lights a steel tank for the hydraulic laboratory five and one-half feet in diameter and thirty-four feet high is being fabricated and will soon be erected the equipment will undoubtedly be in condition so that all students now in the university will receive benefit from it but on account of the great amount of machinery which is now being received and which will be coming in during the next few weeks it is deemed advis able to delay the class work in the course in strength of materials until the latter part of the term it is the intention to give each student who has work in the laboratory a thorough training in the use of the various testing machines with a view of illustrating the theory taught in the course of strength of materials practically all the equipment for the eckley b coxe mining labora tory has been received and put in place classes in all strictly min ing subjects have been held in this building since the opening of col lege some difficulty is being ex perienced in procuring the ores needed but it is expected that in a month actual laboratory work will be started at a meeting of the junior class held at the close of the college meeting last friday the following men were nominated to fill the posi tion of vice president bernie kennedy and wright for athletic representative kennedy donald son hart and martin were nomi nated in response to coach reiter's first call for candidates about a dozen men appeared on the foot ball field monday sept 12th for the first few days only the lightest work was indulged in due to the recent radical revision and reform most of the time has been spent in learning the vast possibilities which are opened up to the men playing the game this year the squad has worked faithfully and has steadily grown in number until now over forty men have re ported at various times on the field punting has been given special at tention ; falling on the ball and the new style of tackling have been taught thoroughly ; forward passes have been practiced a great deal for the last few days signal prac tice has been much in evidence to morrow x?ur season opens with western maryland college and thif first game under the new rules will be watched with more than the usual interest which marks the first game of the season the fact that coach reiter has studied and taught foot-ball at har vard this summer is regarded as peculiarly qualifying lehigh's new coach for his position here this fall the athletic career of coach reiter who is an a b and m a graduate of princeton is in detail as follows : he was captain of the pennington seminary foot-ball team in 1893 and 1894 and captain of the base-ball nine in 1894 from 1896 to 1899 inclusive he was a member of the princeton varsity eleven the 96 98 and 99 teams ! winning the american inter-collegi ate championship mr reiter is reputed to be one of the fastest ends princeton ever had in the fall of 1901 he coached and played on the philadelphia ath letic foot-ball team lie coached foot-ball alone at wesleyan univer sity middletown conn in 1903 and 1904 and from 1905 to 1910 coninued at wesleyan under the title of physical director and coach in 1909 he graduated from the har vard summer school of physical education lie taught the theory and practice of foot-ball in the har vard summer school in 1908 1909 and 1910 section chiefs the following men have recently been elected chiefs of the various sections in taylor hall : w it caddy section a l c wright section b ;
