continued on fourth page professor j w richards head of the department of metallurgy has been chosen president of the section of metallurgy and mining of the international congress of applied science which meets in this country in 1912 bley 11 has been re-appointed as lehigh's representative on the staff of the intercollegiate for the year 1910-11 11 m warke 12 left college owing to ill health which is being urged in the profes sions of medicine and law may we all — trustees faculty alumni and students — draw from this occasion inspiration and zeal to continue the good work and to insure to our university the place she has held among the leaders of higher education in our country speaking in behalf of the student body mr lowry did himself par ticularly proud and with well chos en w t ords expressed earnest thoughts of memory for our found er and continuance of high ideals of college life in part he said : as has been well said the pri mray principle of education is the determination of the pupil to self activity the doing nothing for-thim which he is able to do for himself this was the spirit of those mer who early sought education within uiese walls the mure complex life of to-day has its reflection in the development of undergraduate activities no longer is interest concentrated in the valedictorian as in the days when foot-ball cap tains did not exist this is an age of multiple inerests besides our athletics teams we have our publi cations our share of business men we have our undergraduate law makers and executives the under classman early realizes that to carry the most prestige and to enjoy some position of prominence during the last days of his college course he must join the ranks of those who give a large share of their time to outside interests dr drinker introduced mr schwab with characteristic warmth to which mr schwab responded in his usual hearty way in his ad dress he dwelt upon the earnestness which he has found among the trustees and their willingness to devote their time and wealth of ex perience to the education of young men at lehigh he then dwelt on the happy location of this college in a place teeming with industrial activities and attributed to judge packer remarkable foresight in se lecting a site so adaptable as this in the lehigh valley in closing mr schwab paid a sincere compli ment to this college in his statement on thursday morning there gathered at the chapel many le high men and friends of the uni versity to pay tribute to the mem ory of asa packer thursday's ex ercises marked the thirty-first ob servance of this great day which was celebrated in fitting manner unlike other years the addresses were confined to lehigh men rep resenting the board of trustees alumni faculty and student body dr drinker as president of the university and as repersentative of the alumni made the opening ad dress and introduced mr charles m schwab member of the board of trustees ; prof john l stew art member of the faculty and mr donald r lowry president of the senior class in opening dr drinker recalled the institution of the day in is 70 and the annual observance of the memory of our founder of whom he spoke as follows : it was my personal privilege to know him and to know him well as well as a young man could know one so much his senior with whom he was not connected by family ties it was however my good fortune in successive years as an active alumnus and as president of our alumni association and as alumni trustee in the board to have had the experience now inex pressibly valued and cherished by me of being repeatedly thrown into contact with judge packer in the years from my graduation in 1871 to the time of his death in matters relating to the university in which the alumni were even in those early days taking active part and interest i personally know and can testify of my own remembrance that judge packer a self-educated self made man held the broad wise views of liberal edu cation that are to-day advocated by mr fritz — that a well trained engineer should base his technical training on a broad foundation of liberal culture in the humanities a remarkable and most noteworthy position to have been held and ap preciated by judge packer forty years ago when we realize that it is the view which engineers as a body are advocating to-day and continued on second page the brown and white vol xviii lehigh university bethlehem pa friday october 14 1910 lehigh honors the memory of asa packer her founder sophs and fresh in annual battle mechanical and elec meetings two societies hold their first meetings of the year two lower classes clash for ath lectic honors founder's day celebrated with exercises which mark a new departure under ideal weather conditions the two lower classes met on the field all three games were closely contested and not until the last minute was the result sure in the relay race the sophomores won by the wonderful race ran by gorman their captain the time was fast being 3.35 the teams were : 1913 — gorman capt levan savastio mercur and seguine 1914 chaff c capt morse weber todd and murphy in the base-ball game the score was 1-1 up to the sixth inning when the sophs went up in the air both teams played good ball the work of olsen 13 standing out prominently the line-up : 1913 hill lb eberly 2b mc cardy 3b ; olsen ss ; watson if ; wright cf ; shaw rf ; sindel c ; drant p 1914 — kurtz lb ; driscoll 2b howard 3b ; compton ss ; brady if ; mayers cf ; brown rf ; gatch c ; shellenberger p score by innings : 1913 0 0 1 0 0 6—7 1914 0 0 0 1 0 o—l the foot-ball game was hotly contested the teams being evenly matched with perhaps a slight ad vantage on the freshman side the ball see-sawed back and forth throughout the game neither goal being in danger ; the final score be ing 0-0 the line-up : — freshmen sophomores lopez left end fahl mayer left tackle . van nort hagner . . left guard finn treglown .... centre .... gerhardt charnock . . right guard siegel bianco .... right tackle ford wagner .... right end harris young . . quarter-back matthews white . left half-back moore c williams . right half-back dugan goyne capt full-back cole prof richards honored mechanical society with the officers in charge of the mechanical engineering so ciety the present year should prove a most successful one in the history of the society a good attendance and interesting papers at the initial meeting held in williams hall tuesday evening set a pace which will be followed by the succeeding monthly gatherings purification of boiler feed wa ter was the subject of the first paper and was given by o l gra ham 11 after briefly describing the impurities mineral and organic found in water from common sources of supply together with the injurious effects which such im pirities have on boiler linings methods of eliminating such ingre dients were taken up by the aid of extensive sketches the we-fu go system manufactured by win b scaife sons of pittsburg was clearly outlined and explained by this process through filtration and the addition of chemicals the most polluted water may be made clear and free from harmful acids and salts c a schulz 11 gave a com plete description of the grey mill of the bethlehem steel co lie showed by the aid of sketches the construction of the rolls methods of rolling and varying the dimen sions of the i beams and h shapes which are being turned out by this invention of recent years which has so revolutionized the manufacture of structural steel jim myers displayed that he was on the job again this year by serv ing the usual refreshments li a s howarth was re-elected advisor of the society electrical society the first meeting of the electri cal society was held in the physics laboratory on tuesday at 7 30 p m the men who worked hard to make this first meeting a success were well pleased with the number that turned out after opening the meeting and reading the minutes of the last no 6 haverford smoker to=night your presence there makes victory surer tojmorrow notice subscriptions for the brown and white if paid before novem ber 1 will be 1.50 otherwise 2.00 per year these may be mailed to 430 seneca st south bethlehem pa or paid in the brown and white room drown hall wednesday and saturday af ternoons from 2 to 3 o'clock
