on friday at 11 a m a college meeting was held for the purpose of electing the assistant base-ball manager and the athletic represent ative at large the meeting was called to order by president lowry of the senior class who introduced dr drinker as the first speaker dr drinker was received with much enthusiasm and he gave a short talk on his attitude toward athletics at lehigh the elections were then taken up the candidates for assistant base ball manager were baird bir nie and peters ; for athletic repre sentative rinehart and r f wood baird and wood were elected coach reiter the next speaker was received with great applause he spoke of the spirit at lehigh and impressed it on the men to stand by the team in victory or defeat the event of the meeting was captain black's first talk as foot ball captain he told of the condi tion of the team and their willing ness to give all that was in them this was followed by short talks by dillon and dod wood the meeting closed with a short talk by president lowry on the importance of getting out to cheering practice a very enthusiastic reception was tendered by the y m c a to the class of 1914 in drown memorial hall saturday evening last and a large number were present to enjoy the entertaining program of the evening dr drinker opened the reception with a talk on athletics in which he spoke of the gentlemanliness of our students shown at the haver ford game he also told of the building of new tennis courts and expressed a desire that every man should take part in some form of athletics the second talk of the evening was delivered by mr platt secre tary of the y m c a he spoke of the good the y m c a could do for the student body if the men supported the y m c a work mr lowry then spoke of the standard of lehigh to be lived up to in her customs athletics and in her social life he spoke of the y m c a helping to uphold this standard and urged the men to come out to some religious meeting sunday especially the y m c a sunday evening gatherings mr thompson announced the foot-ball and base-ball scores of the various college and professional games that took place satur day afternoon after which the mandolin club rendered a selection coach reiter was heartily greet ed as he arose to speak on possi bilities he emphasized the phrase get into it saying that no mat ter whether in victory or defeat get into it he spoke of the les son taught in losing and felt sure the team was doing its best the president of the y m c a spoke of the various works of the y m c a among them the bible study the mission study and the teaching of english to the for eigners he welcomed the fresh men and tried to impress upon them the importance of starting right and the aid conference school can give them mr fowle traveling secretary continued on second page the first smoker of the year was held in the gymnasium last friday night the program was a very en joyable one and the committee is to be congratulated upon the suc cess of the occasion a quartette from the glee club opened the entertainment by ren dering several selections which were heartily applauded president lowry of the senior class who presided then introduced dr drinker as the first speaker dr drinker responded in his usual wirm way and took the opportun ity of stating the friendly attitude which the faculty and trustees have taken toward athletics he also announced a gift of several tennis courts to the college by charles m schwab the announcement being received with prolonged cheers after two excellent selections by a quinette from the mandolin club capt black of the foot-ball team followed with a speech urging the students to support the team in ev ery possible way especially by at tending the cheering practices sev eral songs were sung and cheers given in preparation for the haver ford game on saturday and then a wrestling bout took place between davies 11 and hart 12 neither of the contestants was able to se cure a fall during the six minutes on the mat and the referee jim my mahoney declared the bout a draw the quartette rendered two more selections and after r corsa 04 had made a few remarks a four round boxing bout took place be ween young griffo and kid cutler both of south bethlehem it was fast throughout and brought forth much applause coach reiter was called upon to speak and in a very enthusiastic manner he con gratulated the team upon its fighting spirit and expressed the hope that the student body would support the team better in the fu ture than they have during the past month the evening's entertain ment closed with the singing of the alma mater h g harvey 09 is now trans former expert for the general electric co haverford defeats lehigh brown and white meets defeat as result of fluke supporters of the brown and white received a severe jolt when they met defeat at the hands of haverford on saturday once again lehigh was hampered by the new rules losing several chances to score itaverford's score result ed from a blocked kick and while lehigh's defeat can be attributed to a fluke it was evident that haver ford put up more of a fighting game than did the lehigh team the haverford team came up to do or die and brought along a couple hundred of noisemakers to help them win their biggest game these supporters were much in evi dence throughout the contest and showed some of the best of spirit at 3 00 o'clock seckle kicked off for haverford to heard who got to the twenty-seven yard line before potter downed him lehigh was unable to gain and harwig punted to seckel who was downed by black in the middle of the field hartshorne gained five through the line but when he attempted to get around rouse the latter threw him for a loss of two yards levin punted and heard was downed on his thirty yard line an attempted run by dobbins on a fake kick failed to gain and harwig punted to potter vela getting the latter on itaverford's 32 yard line here black recovered the ball when haverford fumbled and then a for ward pass by heard to dobbins netted 10 yards lehigh was penal ized five yards for offside playing and then heard's forward pass was intercepted by seckel who was downed on his own 35 yard line a line buck by seckel and a for ward pass netted haverford 12 yards haverford then lost the ball on downs and kennedy gained six around left murray threw heard for a loss of six yards and levin then caught heard's onside kick haverford then found it necessary to punt to heard who was downed on the 55 yard line lehigh was unable to gain and harwig punted to porter who ran the ball back to his 23 yard line haverford again was forced to punt and lehigh ad vanced the ball to haverford's 45 yard line before time was up in the second quarter a line buck by cox and forward passes to rouse and dobbins put the ball on haverford's 15 yard line at this point an attempted forward pass failed to gain as did also a fake kick haverford getting the ball on her own seventeen yard line on the next two plays cox and wood pushed haverford back twelve and a half yards haverford punted and then potter captured heard's for ward pass and gained forty yards before cox caught him potter's leg was severely injured and he was forced to give way to henshaw potter received a great ovation from the bleachers as he was car ried off the field haverford then failed in an attempt at a drop kick heard recovering the ball and be ing downed on his five yard line harwig attempted to punt but longstreth blocked and fell on the ball for a touchdown murray then failed to kick an easy goal lehigh then kicked off to haver ford took the ball on downs and got it back to itaverford's 40 yard line before time was up in the third and fourth quarters the play was hard but rather
