the first regular meeting of the arts and science club was held on thursday last in saucon hall . ow ing to vacancies in the list of the officers of the club elections were held for the positions of secretary and treasurer which resulted in the election of a v laub 12 for secretary and c r streets 13 for treasurer the following men were then elected to the club : to honorary membership r p moore 10 w j robbins 10 and c a schulz 10 to active membership d t baird 14 l r eltringham 14 a e greenof 12 f p houghton 14 j j mcnamara 14 e c meiswinkel 13 l b sheen 14 m stewart 13 the reading of the papers then followed the first by c a hasek 11 on the decline of greek tragedy and the second by c r streets 13 on the value of latin in the present day educa tion a discussion followed in which professors blake and good win criticized the papers as did robbins moore and schulz president kerr 11 voiced pro fessor blake's sentiments in urging the present members to do their best to get others interested in the organization he also announced that the probable date for the next meeting would be november 17th inasmuch as the last thursday of the month the regular meeting night of the club comes during the thanksgiving vacation the club then adjourned and partook of the refreshments which jim myers chef had set forth good program enjoyed sophs win at basket-ball the second smoker of the year was held in the gymnasium last friday night the program as ar ranged by the committee was ex cellent and was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students present a very acceptable selection by the band opened the entertainment this was followed by the first half of a basket-ball game between the teams of the freshman and sopho more classes the contest was close and hard fought throughout and although the sophomores held the advantage from the start the freshmen put up a plucky fight the game ended with a score of 32 to 14 in favor of 1913 muthart and white excelled for the sopho mores while white starred for the freshmen the line-up : sophomores freshmen white .... right forward . . . brady thomas maccardy.left forward . . . \\ r hite cole muthart center .... siebecker rooney .... right guard . . . griffith sindell left guard street flartegan goals from floor : white 4 cole 2 muthart 7 rooney sindell griffith 2 siebecker 2 white bra dy goals from foul : muthart 2 siebecker 2 referee merkel 11 between the halves of the game a wrestling bout took place between davies 13 and wiss 14 the for mer succeeded in securing a fall af ter four and a half minutes on the mat after the mandolin club had rendered two excellent selections coach reiter addressed the students in his usual enthusiastic manner he again asked for the spirited sup port of the student body and ex pressed the belief that a good fight ing team would be developed before the final games of the season as sistant coach sam strauss was heard from for the first time this year and the earnestness with which he predicted a successful fighting team despite the many ob stacles which have handicapped the team met with hearty applause after the last half of the basket ball game jimmie mahoney held the attention of the audience by a fine exhibition of club swinging a spirited four round boxing bout between young stanley and kid kelly both of south bethle hem brought forth much enthusi asm from the onlookers the ref eree jimmie mahoney declared the bout a draw the evening's en tertainment closed with the singing of the alma mater without perkins swarthmore would have been unable to score against lehigh last saturday and would have been defeated without scoring but as it was perkins was in the game and it is owing to his presence alone that swarthmore gained a 15 to 8 victory over the brown and white the little end's ability to kick field goals was proved when he kicked three of them he also picked up a fumbled punt raced across the goal line for a touchdown and then kicked the goal eberle also played a star game for swarthmore several times he eluded the lehigh ends and made long gains while his excellent forward passes were responsible for many more good gains by his team for lehigh the playing of the line stands out most excellent vela reese harwig and black blocked fifteen kicks or forward passes between them and their work was not far ahead of that of wylie rouse and g r wood harwig averaged forty-five yards on his punts some of them being made against the heavy wind that swept the field throughout the game up to the last four minutes of play the game looked like a sure victory for lehigh at this point several substitutions seemed to weaken the team and swarthmore overcame lehigh's lead and scored nine points before the whistle blew the work of the team stood out a hundred per cent better than in previous games and we need not be discouraged by the defeat which came upon us in the last few min utes of play lafayette scored but five points against the garnet ; we scored eight the game in detail : wood ran back perkins kick-off to the 35 yard line lehigh was penalized five yards for off-side and then dobbins gained three through the line lehigh fumbled and swarthmore got the ball vela blocked a forward pass and the ball went to the middle of the field be fore delaney fell on it another for ward pass failed to gain and it was le high's ball in the center of the field lehigh could not gain and harwig punt ed to eberle on swarthmore's 20 yard line price dropped delaney's punt after a hard run and swarthmore got the ball another punt went over price's head and it was swarthmore's ball on le high's 7 yard line swarthmore failed to make the distance but it was an easy matter for perkins to drop-kick the ball over the bar knox fumbled perkins kick-off but price got the ball and was downed on his 23 yard line lehigh was penalized for off-side and harwig punted to eb erle on lehigh's 50 yard line black get ting the tackle eberle gained six yards around left end but harwig got eberle's forward pass lehigh was again penal college revises resolutions recent athletic ' resolutions are revised at college meeting orchestra dance the l u orchestra held a very successful foot-ball dance on sat urday evening of last week the couples that were in attendance had a most enjoyable time the or chestra played all the best dance music in true professional manner during intermession refreshments were served it is hoped that an other dance will be given in the near future y m c a convention the fourth college meeting of the year was held on friday morn ing with a large attendance an nouncements were made regarding a senior class and mandolin club meeting and of the orchestra dance and the swarthmore smoker the resolutions presented by the investigation committee in may were re-read and again passed on in the first one regarding coaching the paragraph advising a change of foot-ball coach was dropped the resolutions concerning the equip ment of teams the physical com fort of the men publicity of the athletic committee proceedings the power of the executive committee of the athletic committee and the student representation to the ath letic committee were passed as read the one concerning the elec tion of team managers was dis cussed but a vote on it was deferred until the next meeting the six resolutions which were passed are to be submitted to the athletic committee at their next meeting dillon spoke on the benefit of hav ing the band out at cheering prac tice and urged all men playing any sort of an instrument to come out for the band it was announced that at cheering practices and games the students would sit by classes and every man was request ed to bring a megaphone on satur day in response to a request by ma guire president lowry stated that there was no rule of the athletic committee which prevented a man from wearing numerals on his hat ized for off-side play and then dobbins got five yards through the line knox got two more on a double pass and then harwig punted to eberle on the latter's 20 yard line vela blocked a punt and rouse fell on the ball a forward pass to black netted five yards and put the ball on swarthmore's six yard line dobbins gained five through the line the ball was fumbled on the next play but dode wood picked it up and car ried it across the line for a touchdown price kicked the goal wood advanced perkins kick-off to the 30 yard line harwig punted to eb crle who made a free catch on his own 45 yard line a forward pass netted swarthmore ten yards just before time was up second quarter — eberle gained three yards on a fake kick black threw boughten for a live yard loss price took perkins punt and was downed on continued on fourth page lehigh's delegates to the gather ing of y m c a men in toronto were general secretary platt l c wright and o l j graham the brown and white t ct'otr^tj tttvtti7""n i qot'fv i^jtlrllljrl uln i v rsk.oi i v bethlehem pa tuesday november 1 1910 smoker helps enthusiasm first meeting of arts and science garnet wins by the drop-kick and a fumble lehigh loses to swarthmore vol xviii elections held and three papers presented no 11 stand by and beat lafayette
