the weekly y m c a meeting held in drown hall on sunday | evening was led by knox 12 and was the best attended meeting this year after the customary opening of the meeting a quartet composed of schall tl staab 14 fuller 12 and terwilliger 12 rendered the vocal selection sweet and low very creditably the speakers of the evening were messrs johnson and poillet both of perm state college both men have been star foot-ball players for perm state and consequently much interest was shown in them by the students after being introduced by knox mr johnson spoke briefly on the y m c a work at state college he stated that although the y m c a is comparatively young there still a keen interest is taken in it by the student body the town at which the college is located is small having a population of only about 1700 so that the town has little or no attraction for the stu dents who therefore have more time to give to y m c a work this interest which the men take in the work shows itself in the form of a good influence of men on the newcomers to college in closing mr johnson urged the men to try to make their interest in the y m c a practical in every day life about college by helping men in va rious ways the next speaker was mr poil let who is a graduate of mercers burg and has spent three years at cornell the subject of his brief talk was development of charac ter in a little preliminary talk mr poillet gave a very interesting account of his three years at cor continued on second page prof william kent of mont clair n ]„ delivered a very inter esting lecture in lehigh university chapel friday morning at 11 30 on engineering and common sense dr drinker introduced the speaker as one who had been his friend for over a generation prof kent was formerly dean of the college of applied science at syracuse university is the author of the famous handbook for me chanical engineers and is now lo cated in new york city as a con sulting engineer and president of the technical literature company the speaker began with a re vised version of the old story of the boy and the donkey carrying i grist to the mill with the bags slung over the donkey's back with corn in one end of the bag and a stone to balance the corn in the other ife then gave four definitions of engineering one of them being his own : engineering is the art and science of overcoming the resist sistance of nature including human nature common sense is difficult to de fine every one thinks he has it and also thinks that most people don't have it and everyone thinks he knows what it means although he cannot define it in words a fairly good definition is the habit of mind that consists in looking at all sides of a question before form ing a final judgment the broad view the far view the opposite of narrowness shortsightedness and one-sidedness engineering is not opposed to common sense for one definition says that engineering is merely educated common sense common sense is more easily il lustrated by examples of its ab sence than by examples of its use ; for instance the man who was sit ting on the limb of the tree sawing off the limb between himself and the trunk and sir isaac newton building a dog house with a big hole for the big dog and a little hole for the little dog numerous illustra tions of the lack of common sense were drawn from the answers to engineering problems in students examinations showing their tend ency to confine themselves to for mulas and often thereby to get ab surd answers drawing conclusions too broad ly from insufficient information is contrary to common sense nu merous examples were given com mon sense in education was the next topic the fittest will survive in the long run but the unfit sur continued on fourth page senior notice at the first opportunity afforded after the christmas vacation a class meeting will be held for the purpose of making nominations for the senior class book committee as the constitution demands that all candidates
