class book committee organizes gives interesting talk on from the rio grande to panama the lecture in the chapel on fri day morning was delivered by mr fullerton l waldo who is one of the editors of the philadelphia public ledger mr waldo is also a fellow of the royal geographi cal society and is widely known both as an able lecturer and as an editor after being introduced by dr drinker mr waldo announced his intention of conducting his audi ence through an imaginary trip from the rio grande to panama starting on the mexican side of the rio grande the first stretch of country encountered is a desert of 150 miles in length at the end of which rises a chain of mountains extending for 650 miles lantern slides were then shown of a few railroads of mexico and particu larly of the vera cruz railroad of the large handsome cathedral of mexico city and views of the home city of diaz of the anti-american feeling in mexico among the educated class there is little the better class of mexicans realize the great flow of united states money into mexico which is doing a great deal to alle viate the strained financial condi tions of some of the states of mex ico however among the ignorant class there is considerably more anti-american feeling mr waldo gave an instance in which this was shown to him during his mexican travels the next slide of interest gave a view of mt popocatapetal which rises to a height of 17,885 feet above sea level and the top of which is covered with perpetual snow from this volcano sulphur has been taken for years at first it was the custom of the natives to remove the sulphur from the crater by hand but later a windlass and steel cable were provided which greatly hastened the work the crater of the volcano is between two and three miles in circumference it has had no eruption since 1810 but gases are continually rising from it and at the bottom of the crater is a molten lake of sulphur lehigh-new jersey club the senior class book com mittee held a meeting on friday afternoon at which organization was effected the officers are : chairman r f crump ; business manager h d kerr correction american forestry association praises our forestry work the university is a member not only of the pennsylvania forestry association but of the american national organization the annual meeting of the american forestry association was held in washing ton on thursday and friday jan uary 12th and 13th and was attend ed on behalf of the university by president drinker and dr hall representing our courses in biology and our interests in forestry the main subject discussed at the meeting was the promotion of the proposed appalachian forest reserve there is a bill pending in congress the weeks bill which has passed the house and is to be acted on in the senate next month providing for a forest reserve to extend throughout the appalachian range in the eastern states and give to the eastern states that measure of forest protection and benefit which has been so bounti fully given in the west the work that the university has been and is doing in this re gion in educating the public to some knowledge of the immense import ance of the forestry question has attracted much attention among foresters and was highly commend ed by the association as will be shown by the following extracts from the proceedings in the address of ex-governor guild of massachusetts president of the association who gave us so interesting an address on the for estry question on the evening of wednesday december 21st he said : i wish very much that the other col leges of the united states would follow in the path where lehigh university has paved the way lehigh up there in the hills of pennsylvania has a series of lecture courses open to the public under its department of forestry and while it does not undertake to maintain a special forest school is a center of information and education on the subject of forest conservation in all the districts round about all the citizens in that neigh borhood are informed and their en thusiasm kept alive by the efforts of our friend of forestry doctor drinker and by the able faculty which co-operates with him in spreading this useful and patriotic knowledge among their fellow citizens in that part of the country president guild was followed by dr j t rothrock of pennsylva nia who also spoke here last au tumn who in referring to lehigh university said : lehigh university as our friend the president has stated has started on a career of public education a course of lectures has been inaugurated there and continued on second page during the past week arrange ments have been completed for the engagement of a track coach for this coming spring mr j j guiney a coach of recognized abil ity has been secured and he will commence active work here about april ist mr guiney s record follows : he was captain of the • boston interscholastic foot-ball team for two years and held the interscholastic 12 11 shot record at 49 ft 2y 2 in at andover he was on the foot-ball track gymnasium and basket-ball teams for two years in 1904 he went to st louis as a member of the olympic team after wheh he was connect ed with the missouri athletic club for four years he was at chautau qua and was captain of the crew there during the past four years he has been at haverford college where he coached the track gym and foot-ball teams with the material on hand and under mr guiney's supervision there is every reason for great suc cess in track work next spring after the beginning of the second term a formal call for candidates will be made and a large turnout is expected we beg to correct an item that occurred in the account of the am erican engineers handbook which appeared in our last number the publishers of the book are john wiley and sons after the college lecture on fri day a meeting of the lehigh-new jersey club was held at which the following officers were elected : president w h waddington vice president e h austin ; sec retary w r king treasurer g j shurts the brown and wmfip lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday january 24 1911 travel lecture by mr waldo vol xviii first wrestling tournament navy victor over lehigh no 28 lehigh honored at washington lehigh loses first basket-ball game at annapolis handicapped by the unusually large floor and the absence of mut hart who is still out of the game because of sickness the lehigh varsity five lost to the naval academy saturday afternoon in their first contest in a foreign cage the navy gym although exceptionally large was well-filled and it is estimated that more than fifteen hundred people witnessed the game the lehigh quintette appeared to be somewhat dismayed by the speedy covering of the navy guards in the first period of the contest while their opponents with three men continually on the offense scored enough points to make sure of the game nevertheless the con test was a pretty one to look at and the excellent work of both teams was continually applauded the half ended with the score 22 to 8 in the navy's favor it was in the second period how ever that our representative quin tette showed their real strength while cook and cole covered their opponents superbly the brown and white offense played brilliantly and closed the gap on the score continued on third page track coach engaged try-outs give promise for ex cellent team on saturday night the semi finals for the wrestling team were held in the gymnasium a large attendance was on hand and were liberal in their applause at the ex cellent showing made by the con testants all matches were evenly arranged and fought and the im pressions made are of great prom ise for an excellent team the re sults :—: — 115 lb class — herr 13 threw girlord 14 in two minutes twenty seconds with a head lock herr 13 and zimmerman 14 were later on the mat for nine min utes without a fall the bout was called a draw and will be decided on wednesday 125 lb class — dunbar 13 won by default from downs 14 and sevastio 13 135 lb class — fowler 12 threw throm 11 in 6 mm 55 seconds by means of a half nelson and body hold 145 lb class — mohr 11 threw birdsal 12 in one minute 45 sec onds by means of a bar hold and half nelson mohr threw graham 11 by a body hold in seven minutes and five seconds 158 lb class — lewis 13 dislo cated his shoulder and the match went to tice 13 175 lb class — reese 11 threw bianco 14 by a half nelson and arm lock in eight minutes and twen ty seconds reese threw rouse 13 by the same hold in five min utes and thirty seconds the winners of the 125 135 and 145 lb classes will meet the mem bers of last year's team st john davies and cook on wednesday as a final try out for the team the timekeepers on saturday night were cox and palle while davies and st john acted as ref erees
